If you send a message to the front chat (the link I provided earlier) does it go through? It's not meant to be used directly like that but you should be able to send a message from it. Could help troubleshoot the issue maybe.
That is strange. Sounds like something on your end. What happens when you go to the main chat? What do you see? What about the mini chat on the main page?
I like this idea, other people have suggested similar ones. The problem is it could be abused. People could artificially raise their posts much easier, and it would be more difficult to spot. I could only see something like this working if the algorithm was enigmatic.
Some good points. As admin of the site I like the idea of not allowing scores < 0, but as a normal user I dislike the idea. Youtube is worse since they removed downvotes. I think a good compromise is having a negative score not negatively impact your experience, as long as no rules are broken of course.
>So what holds 3rd generation Reddit Clones, like Upgoat and Poal, back?
Many things. The internet is a completely different place now. Getting that initial userbase is the hardest part and is what kills most attempts these days. Back then there was less knowledge and less people into programming, so just just building something would intrigue people's interest. "If you build it, they will come" was true. Not so today. These days, especially with chatgpt, anyone could build something similar. That in itself is no longer special or interesting like it was back when voat started. Then the hyper-propaganda and censorship kicking in around 2015 really damaged the essence of the internet. People became closed minded and tribalistic. The left started to frame free speech as a bad thing, and anything that didn't cater to their whims was shit. Even if a site caters to leftist ideology, because it doesn't cater to *their* specific beliefs then it's shit. As far as the right, most people are happy with twitter or gab. Having a website with both left and right discussing and debating is no longer possible. The reddit-style site is outdated according to most, who prefer a curated algorithms matched to their preferences. The tricks these big sites use to reel people in work well. Then there's the trust issue. People are used to corporations taking/selling their data, so they think all sites are like that. Why sign up for a random website and take that risk? Then there is discord... I could go on.
I wasn't planning to just needed help with funding. Without the help a shut down was in the cards, but it wasn't planned. Thankfully a generous goat stepped in and we should be good for a while depending on how ambitious I want to be. I could continue to run this place like a jew and be online for years. Or I could be more ambitious and try to use it to grow, with the risk of failing and shortening that runway. I'm still figuring it out.
There already is a small limit already, like 10 seconds, which is increased for accounts with negative points. This would be easiest to implement. Just have to tweak the value.
Like I said, I'm just getting feedback and ideas. I like the way it is currently, let people curate their own feeds. But does anyone really need to be posting more than 10 new threads in an hour? If the site were larger it would make sense the let the subs pick their own limit.
Spam has many definitions. I define it as content containing zero substance or designed to annoy, or content which is geared to sell something. Posting this type of content repeatedly is spamming.
>It's more that he forum slides; submitting such an avalanche of posts within 20 minutes that it pushes everything else into the 2nd or 3rd page.
It's impossible to forum slide with the hide function. I encourage people to use it. Being able to temporarily filter out a user is nice.
>His drivel is absolute shit (which granted, is a matter of poor taste (read: gov't propaganda)(Fox, CNN, MSNBC, Reuters, etc.); his faggoty posts look like paul_neri on steroids.
The community is small, that's the only reason browsing /new it's even feasible. Try doing that on reddit and every time you refresh it's a whole new batch of topics about stuff you don't care about. If this place ever gained traction the same would happen here. /new is supposed to be a bit chaotic. That's the whole point of the voting system, to bring attention to the good stuff. The alternative is scored.co, where everything is hidden away from you.
>And this nigger refuses to archive, yet posts a fucking patronizing 'Make sure to use archive.is' post.
Automation is not something I have considered or put rules on. Mainly because it's impossible for me to know. The voting system should prevent this type of spam but he is highly upvoted with scp: 21953 (+23163/-1210), so it seems some people get enjoyment out of his content. I also have bookmarklets which automate a small part of submitting content at
https://www.upgoat.net/bookmarklet
If voting fails, there is also block. If you'd rather not block you can temporary filter all posts from a user by hiding them in increments of 20 mins/1 day/ 1 week.
If these solutions aren't enough then I will just put a hard cap of 5-10 submissions per day. It's up to the community if they want that. If so I will implement it.
Edit:
Just to be clear, automated voting is something I am against. People get banned or lose the ability to vote if I detect it. I am talking about content submission.

I'm out of ideas. Sounds like a problem with something on your end. No one else has reported anything and I haven't made any changes to chat.

What about when you go to https://www.upgoat.net/frontchat or https://www.voat.xyz/frontchat (which ever you use)

At my old rate that was maybe twice a year. After my past binge I am cutting that down to 0.

>Why not just caution the abusers rather than blanket rulings for the majority of users?
I like having clear parameters. Picking and choosing what to enforce on who leads to a bad experience for everyone I think.

Perhaps I could create an algorithm to detect accounts who vote in unison. But then what? Ban them from voting? Weighted based voting system?
