Ukraines 'greatest counter-offensive' last summer made some minor advances, but was a crushing defeat that decimated their forces. Russia since regained some strategic locations, and their current 'pre-offensive' is beginning to roll over the collapsing Ukrainian defense. "Roll over" is a relative term, since they're still slogging it out in trenches and ruins of towns and villages.
The May 9 Victory Day is celebrated in most of the successor states to the Soviet Union. The day is traditionally marked by ceremonial military parades with the most prominent one being traditionally held in Moscow Red Square.
It's generally expected that the full Russian offensive against the invaders will begin shortly after Victory Day.
Mappers favor the Ukrainian side - Red areas are Russian controlled. Eastern Chasov Yar is to the east of the Canal. Bakhmut is to the east of this position.
Ukrainians still control the treeline on that hill above Bohdanivka, and to the left towards Chasov Yar. Russians apparently haven't occupied the village yet. It's probably smashed flat with no cover from hillside fire.
The logic behind all those advancements and retreats follows the same logic: One at a time, so that there is always some theater going on while not doing anything too much and chaotically. They are trying to milk this distraction psyop to the fullest.
We've come across situations when the enemy runs toward us in attempt to surrender, only to be shot in the back by his own forces.
We also come across situations in which after a storm we find soldiers with wounds to their arms, legs, torso, and with a clean controlled shot to the head. Implying that instead of rescuing their wounded they execute them.
Even in situations when we try to rescue a wounded Ukrainian they attack with drones. For them this is just another opportunity to inflict casualties.
