How do people use smartphones on the modern day internet?     (technology)

Got a new phone. It took like 3 days setting it up, way more time consuming than setting up a PC, but in the end I have a clean experience with no ads or bullshit. Full control. Just enough google malware and allowed connections to enable push notifications. But damn... to think people use these things how they come from the factory is insane.

Ads. litterally. everywhere.

You can't simply put a youtube video on and watch it. Because every few minutes an ad comes on and it STAYS ON THE SCREEN till you manually press a button to get back to the video, so waiting 30-60 seconds for the ad to end is pointless. You have to let the gods at google know you are there and physically touch your device to continue their feed of dopamine. Every 3-5 minutes. Forget multitasking or playing a video in the background.

It's everywhere, every app, every website non-stop. The amount of power and bandwidth spent sending in ads and sending out your data is criminal. Is it any better on Iphone? I doubt that. Apple fan boys are generally even worse because they're superficial. I'd take a rooted $100 Android over your $1000 iphone any day.

And most people put up with it. It's their every day experience. A new phone is like a used condom. Have some respect for yourself.

Biometrics Active - A Weird Thing Happened Returning Through Airport - The Last Refuge     (theconservativetreehouse.com)

https://theconservativetreehouse.com/blog/2025/04/24/biometrics-active-a-weird-thing-happened-returning-through-airport/comment-page-1/

As most of you know I have been traveling extensively. However, a strange thing happened today upon return through the airport.

Apparently, all of the test pilots for biometrics, real ID etc. are now linked and active. As I approached the passport control kiosk with my passport in hand, the gentleman said “welcome back, enjoy the rest of your day,” and that was it.

I stood there for a second, asked if he needed my passport and he said, “no, you’re good. Go on through.” It seems the facial recognition software is live. You no longer need to show your U.S. passport or any ID when arriving through U.S. international passport control.

Now, I should say I have never signed up for TSA pre-check, Fast Track, or any other kind of Global Travel authentication. I have always opted to just be a grey traveler with as little a footprint as possible. I reentered the U.S. the same way in February and needed to show the traditional passport, etc. However, this time in April it was totally different. There is no longer any paperwork or documentation needed. It actually, seemed a little weird.

Aether is where Voat should be.

It is a distributed, Free Speech platform, released under a Free Licence.

If you haven't tried it yet, take a look. There are a few tricks to learn, like almost every sub is NSFW, even cooking! To see them all, you need to enable NSFW in options. Also, for security, thumbnails are disabled, so you will need to enable that too if you want to view images in the client.

People often misunderstand a Terms of Service (ToS) statement on the Aether website. The ToS pertains to the website forum for Aether, which is used for logging bugs etc. Speech is Free on Aether, to the extent that the laws of the USA permit, which is as much as anywhere.

The moderation system is such that you can impeach a mod you don't like and have them replaced, if enough people feel the same way.

Aether is due for a major new update any day now, so it is a good time to check. The project is funded through purchases of a different application, which is not required, and this is available on the Aether website.

I am glad to see the feeling of Voat here again, but unfortunately, a centralized, HTTP website, using Cloudflare, is just repeating the mistakes of history and I fear doomed to failure. Hopefully not, but there you are.

If you have any questions, I would be happy to try and answer them here.

See you on Aether!

DISH Wants Starlink To Cease Operations In Case Of Unfavorable FCC Decisions     (wccftech.com)

FTA: "The third-party studies which it uses as the basis of the claims use different assumptions than those which SpaceX has stated to the FCC. A portion of DISH's analysis which conforms with SpaceX's claims shows that no interference to DISH terminals will take place from Starlink communications, but the company believes that the scenario under which this applies is not applicable to real-world usage conditions."

Sounds like Dish is sweating a bit..

One of the Most Perplexing Problems iPhone Users Encounter is How to Delete Their "Downloads History" Without Losing the Files- Google Was Misinformation While the iPhone Helpline Was No Help At All - I explain how to do it read on ..     (technology)
submitted by MartinTimothy to technology 3.9 years ago (+5/-1)

Google says, "go to yr Downloads history and select an item by long pressing it, a blue heading will appear with a bin icon hit it and you have successfully deleted yr download history," except when you take that path if the download was an image file it is permanently erased from yr computer.

The item I am using is an OPPO model CPH1831 the fellow at their helpline was no help at all, he said to download the stuff I wanted to keep onto a third party computer, then do a full factory reset on the Iphone which would necessarily delete the DL history .. which was no solution at all since i needed to keep the stuff on the phone, he was no further use and when I rang back after discovering the method he would not take the call.

Ok open "File Manager" a list will appear in this case we click "Pictures" at right screen, there will be a number in a bracket, click that and a panel will open with a "Select" box top right .. click "Select All" and green headings appear at the bottom of the screen, click the "More" icon and a box will open with the heading "Add to Private Safe," click that and yr images are transferred to the PS folder and removed from yr downloads history all at once.

So how do we open our "Private Safe" and how do we find it .. go to "Settings" and scroll to "Security," at bottom is the "Private Safe" heading click that and a panel will open prompting you to enter yr "Passcode" for PS - ok first time users will have to enter a four digit pin when you have done that yr "Private Safe" folder will open, in this case we tested the op with an image, thus clicking the "Photos" heading there it is as large as life and yr DL history is gone :)

I found out about another reason to use Brave     (technology)

Aside from having low RAM usage, being fast, focusing on privacy (built-in ad and tracker blocker), giving free tokens that you can use to donate to websites (by enabling ad notifications, completely unrelated to your personal information), being able to run all the extensions chrome can run, having a built-in TOR, being created by an anti-LGBTP and anti-lockdown/masks goat, etc., etc.,
I just found out about another cool feature: it has a built-in torrent client. Nice.

Where are the robotic bricklayers? A deep dive into a hundred years of automation struggles     (constructionphysics.substack.com)

It is not the only technology with a surprisingly long history. Rail gun projects start from scratch, make good progress, hit snags, fail, and go down the memory hole. Then the next rail gun project starts from scratch...

So I'm intrigued that there is a book https://www.simonandschuster.co.uk/books/SAM/Jonathan-Waldman/9781501140594 documenting the trials and tribulations of one project. Perhaps progress here will be cumulative?

Astounding NEW 5G CHIP production output ! Ridiculously cheap 5G Tracker chips by TMSC ! Hundreds of millions of 5G radio transceiver chips capable of put into tiny little tracking devices! Prevent thefts? Aid in transportation logging? Avoid misplaced car keys? Or scarier 5G purposes?     (techtaiwan.com)

Billions of slightly older more expensive 5G ships for full service devices cost more from these 10 suppliers :

https://www.electronicproducts.com/top-10-5g-chipsets/#

But this set of billions in that link is for ultra low power little tracking devices coupled with airTag :

https://www.slashgear.com/best-lost-item-trackers-pitted-against-the-airtag-25670298/

5G uses most prior radio but introduces 24–29 GHz and 37–43 GHz radio bands.

Why the rush to make society reliant on 37–43 GHz radio everywhere?

Switch your search engine to Searx - Here are a list of instances with a short guide     (searx.space)
submitted by LoliNeko to technology 3.7 years ago (+5/-1)
2 comments last comment...
https://searx.space/

Explanations for the columns are at the bottom. Choice of URL name aside, ideally you'll want:
TLS & CSP - A+
HTML - V
IPv6 - Yes
Search response time - below 1 second

Once you've chosen an instance of your choice, customize your preferences on the top-right corner. Assuming the defaults are already sane, my personal recommendations are:
General - Show advanced settings - On (to directly search specifics without wasting clicks)
Engines - Allow all (to also see results from less-cucked indie search engines, optionally turn off those with higher Max times to reduce time taken to perform a search)
Plugins - Infinite scroll - Disabled (designed to addict and exploit, break the habit)

Congratulations, you're now donating far less data to (((big tech))), who would use it to train their deep-learning AI against the goy anyway.

Edit: my problem is now solved
It doesn't get write-protected when I format it as ntfs or fat32, but I specifically need it to be ext4 (and write-enabled). Also I'm on Debian, and my other computer has Mint.

This is meant to be combined with AdBlock, the latter only blocks YouTube ads, this skips over the "This video is brought to you by Shitware Company" segments, very useful.
