I disagree with his premise that the "data" is "useless."

He is anecdotally referring to noise elements without acknowledging signal elements. With enough computing power, the trends as a whole can give key insights into commercial behavior.

Of course looking at one byte will leave you confused about how worthwhile the collection endeavor is. It is about the whole of the data on aggregate and the bigger picture that emerges by identifying how the data is connected.

That being said, it does seem somewhat overvalued as far as commercial potential goes. I think its perceived value has arisen by the alluring potential that government agencies believe to exist regarding how the data can be implemented to control a population.

I mean, fifteen years ago the FBI used to brag about how they created networks of people from social media interactions. Just like the old crime dramas where the police would arrange the photos of the mafia organizations on a corkboard with yarn spun between them. Now we see China implementing social credit scores and Australia debuting a similar database. It won't be long before the UK does the same thing. And then the US. And when I say "does the same thing," they already have a social credit score model in place and functioning, they are just waiting for the laws to change to legitimize what they've already done and allow them to take executive actions based on the data.

Of course it's bullshit. These companies make billions of dollars optimizing their data to generate more sales. They can test and see what works. They can tell a lot about you and tailor their ads and recommendations. And then there's the more nefarious panopticon desire of these authoritarian companies to mold their consumers into the "proper" way to behave and think.
