Once you've chosen an instance of your choice, customize your preferences on the top-right corner. Assuming the defaults are already sane, my personal recommendations are:
General - Show advanced settings - On (to directly search specifics without wasting clicks)
Engines - Allow all (to also see results from less-cucked indie search engines, optionally turn off those with higher Max times to reduce time taken to perform a search)
Plugins - Infinite scroll - Disabled (designed to addict and exploit, break the habit)
