Why is behavioral science focused on autists?     (TellUpgoat)

All the other tentacles of the psychopseudosciences have a much broader range of client type, but the behavioral psychopseudoscience tends to only focus on the dim witted, handi-incapable range of the population. I believe behaviorism is wasted in psychopseudoscience, behaviorism properly executed is the proto-science, the so called 'phenomenological reduction'.

For all things in this universe appear to have some sort of interaction potential. In the strictest technical sense any physical interaction between discreet parts of an environment can be classified as a behavior. In the social sense, behavior is a person directing stimuli towards something or someone else, and the something and someone reciprocating that stimuli in some way.

Behavior is basically a mental box that we arbitrarily define, and when the universe organizes itself in a specific way that fits in that mental box, a light goes off in our brain that says, 'hey behavior happened'. In that sense, behavior is like a car crossing a timing light, once the car crosses the line, it counts a lap. It counts as a 'driving a lap behavior' as long as it satisfies several arbitrary criteria.

Therefore, behavior is essentially a way to create a scientific experiment, you define the behavior you are trying to measure. First you have to know what you're trying to measure, second you have to know how to affect that measurement by controlling the variables.

Fixing an engine is using behavioral strategies. Say an engine is misfiring at high rpm, that is the behavior. You understand that because how engines work, and how they ought to behave, that typically it's a spark issue. So you change the variables, you change the spark plugs, and the behavior changes. Simple, straight forward.

Which brings me back to the title of the post, I guess behavior psychopseudoscientists pick autists and simple-folk because there are less confounding variables to affect their experiments.

Never put a cardboard box on your car. Cardboard will scratch the fuck out of your clear coat, unless you want to ruin your car's paint never put a cardboard box on your trunk or hood, and if you do and move it around, when you ruin your paint, I want you to think about this post.

Can you turn your waist without turning your knee? No, most of you will toss your hip by turning your knee. You've lived your whole life doing this because you're afraid of your own momentum. By tossing your hip, and turning your knee when you turn your waist you're dissipating all your energy, wasting it. By not moving your knee when you turn your waist you keep all your energy. Even people that have practiced for years can't do this automatically. If you brace your front knee against something, like a couch or door frame, or bed, you see how easily your energy travels from your back foot, to your lead hand.

How storm surge works.     (Fluiddynamics)

submitted by usedoilanalysis to Fluiddynamics 2.6 years ago

Water tends to follow the circulation of the storm. This explains why Fort Myers had such extreme flooding. The storm was pushing water onto land, the water is being pushed away from the Tampa area, as the storm moves north, the flow will change and the storm will pull water back towards land.

Looks like it's just going to park itself in the gulf of Mexico near Tampa, until it dissipates. The eye isn't going to make landfall until Friday of this week. All the Tampa people beware of flooding more than strong winds.

The reason women are pandered to.     (TellUpgoat)

Who is the most profitable demographic? Who has a bigger influence on consumer spending? Who is more likely to throw something out, and buy a new one if it stops working, who is more likely to try to fix it? A real manly man will keep a car for 25 years and it will run as well as a brand new one. A woman will drive her car, neglect its maintenance, treat it as a spare wardrobe and filing cabinet. When things start breaking, she'll go to a mechanic, 99% of the time a man, because of the neglect, the thing being fixed will cost thousands of dollars, and will lead to other things breaking or wearing out. At this point she will cut her losses and get another car.

You have to understand the pragmatic aspect of the people running the economy, they want money above all else. In order to keep the money flowing you need good consumers, women being the slight majority and are less willing to fix something, are more likely to accept planned obsolescence as a business model. Pandering to women is a result of wanting increased sales and profits because they are a more valuable demographic from a business sense. Same thing for gays, no children, more disposable income, higher propensity for consumption to fill the void.

A self sufficient, happily married man who owns property is a terrible consumer. He's not ordering dominos pizza, he's ripping the head of a chicken he's going to eat tomorrow. He's not paying the electric company for heating, he will chop some fucking wood. He's not buying a new truck, his Ford F150 from 1994 with 450,000 miles still runs like a sewing machine. His computer is fast enough to run excel and make spread sheets, he doesn't waste time with games, so he's not dropping $1,500 on the latest graphics card, and $400 on a power supply.
