I appreciate this post. What a beautiful airplane. The epitome of piston engine airplanes. The amount of maintenance that went to keeping that machine flying must have been staggering. It was the norm at the time. Still, what a machine!

It had the B2 bomber engines, once the teething issues were ironed out, it's engines were ran at very low revs, and the airframe was so efficient that the plane could fly with just one engine running. While maintenance isn't easy, the engines had long service intervals due to the relatively light load.

I wasn’t an old school flight engineer, I heard their tales of checking magneto’s. I only flew jets. Those guys were real flight engineers. They had to find the problem, I had a blinky light to alert me.
