It's a Catholic thing. It only looks bad if your point of reference is the traditionally dominant dissenter Protestantism of mainstream America. The Puritans also banned Christmas because it was a drunken orgy - NOT the stuff of popularized trees and Hallmark cards. As soon as the royals and high church types got back in the driver's seat they brought it all back.

I suppose I'll add the obvious: that it was a drunken orgy was not the only reason why Puritans banned Christmas of course. They were trying to purge things associated with Catholicism, or what they saw as warmed over paganism, from what they saw as a truly reformed Church of England.
