Heider's balance theory can explain why holding the same negative attitudes of others promotes closeness

https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Tolerating-the-Intolerant-Aguiar-Parravano/2dd199ab1c246fa34454c87450518c69da2d53aa

This work model a community of individuals whose relationships are governed by the rules of the so-called Heider balance theory, but modified to address the impact of tolerating intolerant individuals, and finds that endemic partially balanced configurations are observed in large systems.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selknam_genocide

He genocided the Indians of the Patagonia because they got in the way of his gold.

There are now articles on the internet dedicated to clearing his name, and he is hardly mentioned in the article on Wikipedia. At least, the photographs showing Popper killing Indians are still there.
