I lived in Japan for two years worked as an engineer, but the real reason I was hired was because I had the "Gaijin Superpower".
"Gaijin" literally means "Barbarian" in Japanese, but it's applied to foreigners.
It's kind of like being called a Nigger.
If the Japanese want to be polite, they will call you "Gaikokujin", which means "Cultured Barbarian".

Anyway, The "Gaijin Superpower" is our assertiveness.

So, nobody ever asserts themselves, unless they are the boss.
So, to a Japanese person, anyone who asserts themselves is the boss of any given situation.
