I lived in Japan for two years worked as an engineer, but the real reason I was hired was because I had the "Gaijin Superpower".
"Gaijin" literally means "Barbarian" in Japanese, but it's applied to foreigners.
It's kind of like being called a Nigger.
If the Japanese want to be polite, they will call you "Gaikokujin", which means "Cultured Barbarian".
FYI, Gaijin know what's up and we don't mind being called "Gaijin", and we'll laugh at being called "Gaikokujin".

Anyway, The "Gaijin Superpower" is our assertiveness.
The Japanese are socially timid. It's really easy to get what you want just by being assertive, because the Japanese don't have an immunity to it.
Their whole social structure is built around sacrificing their ego for the sake of social coheision.
So, nobody ever asserts themselves, unless they are the boss.
So, to a Japanese person, anyone who asserts themselves is the boss of any given situation.
Gaijin just never turn the assertiveness off.

My role, as the official "Gaijin Engineer" was to use my Gaijin Superpower to hack this weakness and be the assertive guy who comes in like a wrecking ball and gets shit done.

Point being, I could get whatever I wanted, until I came face to face with a Japanese guy wearing white gloves.
