Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Talk.lol go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @TheRealBuddha or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

Hello and welcome to the Friday Night Guitar Thread.

There was a party at my house earlier this week and my buddy Chris and I entertained the guests.

Here we are playing our latest song for a real live audience, Guess I'm Going Back To Her Now

[ - ] popticalillusion 6 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:13:26 ago (+6/-0)

I like that one! Those were always great rhythms for playing lead guitar and people seem to dig songs like that live too.

Are you getting a full band together? It seems like you had some more folks jamming out that tune.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 4 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:15:36 ago (+4/-0)

It was just us two of us playing. I was playing a bass drum at the same time I was playing the bass lines.

[ - ] popticalillusion 5 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:28:56 ago (+5/-0)

I think I'd have liked to see that one too! LOL Great stuff!

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 5 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:35:16 ago (+5/-0)

All our friends that were over were loving every minute of it!

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 5 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:00:53 ago (+5/-0)

Sounds like a fun time! You singing about dating her sister? I been dragging ass all week but I managed to record a cover tonight.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 6 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:13:52 ago (+6/-0)

Thanks, we had a blast. Those are Chris' words. I am pretty sure he says every time I think about your sister. I contributed the one line about throwing a pencil down the hallway LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 28, 2023 13:18:49 ago (+2/-0)

Sounds like fun!

They found 'em. Like I figured, they were already dead. I imagine the stupid people will be trying to claim it's some conspiracy or something like that. Hopefully, they'll just keep that shit to themselves.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 28, 2023 19:12:33 ago (+2/-0)

How was the show?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 29, 2023 17:55:58 ago (+2/-0)

The first two nights were great. We go on again tonight, but we're done early because it's a Sunday.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 29, 2023 18:40:57 ago (+2/-0)

Cool!

I didn't know you were playing all weekend!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 30, 2023 12:55:41 ago (+2/-0)

Well, that was fun. I'm home. I'm tired and sore, but I'm home.

I even saw some snow, which was nice.

The thing is, it was supposed to sate my desire to perform. Instead, it made me want to perform more often.

I suck at retiring. I really do.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 30, 2023 14:09:22 ago (+2/-0)

That's awesome that it made you feel like doing it more often. That means you truly enjoyed it!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 30, 2023 18:22:26 ago (+2/-0)

For all the bitching I've done, I do love performing live.

It's just something so 'right' for me. I've done it so much that it's just like meeting an old friend for a few beers.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 30, 2023 18:28:04 ago (+2/-0)

Have you made plans to join them at another show yet?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 30, 2023 18:30:50 ago (+2/-0)

No... No, I have not.

I'm trying to fucking retire. As soon as hunting season is over, I'm headed south. Though, that depends on the weather. I'll head down but may return if the winter promises to be as good as I think it's going to be.

If this winter matches any of the previous months, there will be many feet of snow.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 30, 2023 19:22:11 ago (+2/-0)

Mmm...

I made beef stew with venison instead of beef.

It was delicious. You need to know more hunters, so that you can have some venison in your diet.

In some states you can buy venison at the grocery store - deer or reindeer (or elk). In Maine, that's illegal. We can sell farmed reindeer at the store, but you don't see it often. You're better off just going to find a reindeer farm and getting your meat there.

@TheRealBuddha is off playing a show with his band tonight, melting faces and getting panties wet!

He passed along a message for the FNGT

"I'll check in on the thread either late tonight or tomorrow. I doubt I'll have much time during intermissions.

Gonna make some faces melt, some ears bleed, and everyone's getting laid tonight!"

FNGT Theme Song

[ - ] popticalillusion 5 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:03:09 ago (+5/-0)

I tried playing it here on the streets of Louisville Kentucky and it has basically cleared the area of homeless and addicts on this side of the block. LOL

Did they record this song at the same speed it plays at? That's smoking! I'm sure that would be the only way I could come close to that speed myself.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 6 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:16:00 ago (+6/-0)

Yeah, he played it that fast. He did the drums and bass too

[ - ] popticalillusion 6 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:24:21 ago (+6/-0)

Holy smokes! It would be fun to watch him record that stuff!

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 5 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:34:57 ago (+5/-0)

Hell yeah. That would be amazing!

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 8 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:08:31 ago (+8/-0)

Handle Goats with Care

Originally by the Traveling Wilburys and played poorly by me. You can tell I never really sing.. in this apartment anyway.

In other guitar news I gutted a 57 reissue strat from 85. Replaced everything but the pickguard, neck plate, tremolo claw, and string tree. Setting up a floating bridge and it's bitch to get the intonation right. I just ordered a new nut in case I fuck this one up. Never filed one and this other one I just put on is so high it just sounds like shit. That's my plan for the weekend. Get that guitar perfect. I put a bridge on, gilmore style mod in the volume knob. Push/push style. Maybe next week I'll share the tone. It's got 54 custom shop pickups so I'm expecting really classic strat noises.

[ - ] popticalillusion 5 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:20:01 ago (+5/-0)

Your recording is really clear. I love the sound of that guitar. Everything else was great, good work!

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 4 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:33:44 ago (+4/-0)

Thanks man! I put a little compression on it post-recording. Just in band lab. It's a sweet app.

[ - ] JudyStroyer 5 points 1.5 yearsOct 28, 2023 00:07:42 ago (+5/-0)

Hey bud, if you believe your nut is too high, you should be able to intonateat the 12th fret, yet be out of tune at like the third. If you have this same phenomenon across all of your strings, you can take the entire nut and sand the bottom of it (the side opposite the string passages) to get the string height correct instead of doing one at a time. I will use a piece of sandpaper glued to a piece of glass for these types of things. Keep it flat, and check it often to not go too far.

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 5 points 1.5 yearsOct 28, 2023 01:10:40 ago (+5/-0)*

Awesome tips man I appreciate that! I mess around with wiring and like to set up guitars, but I haven't done many. Hardest was probably a fender player jaguar, or the peavey t-15 but I didn't have to do anything to the nut.

I blocked up my squier strat since I was a youngster and after the Jag and T-15 I was thinking I could handle a floating strat bridge. But, with this 57 reissue, literally everything being new it's added a layer of complexity. I'll post some updates later this weekend. Thanks for the props on the cover. I had the advantage of knowing most of the words, I show it to everyone in real life. Even my mom. *- I thought this was under the tranny song.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 4 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:14:09 ago (+4/-0)

Sounds damned good to me! Hell yeah!

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 5 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:17:38 ago (+5/-0)

Thanks man!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 28, 2023 13:10:16 ago (+2/-0)

Sounding good and the thing about filing a nut is that you want to go slow until you know what you're doing.

You can also do the pencil trick to ballpark it. That also helps with matching the radius.

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 28, 2023 19:41:35 ago (+2/-0)*

Thanks Buddha! How was your show?!

I'm really glad I mentioned the nut filing, because I didn't think to do it like @popticalillusion mentioned above and the pencil line seems so simple I don't know why I didn't think of it.

I hadn't really gotten that far, I filed a little bit, got low enough to not jump strings in bends and it's sat there since thursday evening, on account of duties with life keeping me from taking the time it deserves to do it properly. Tomorrow is the day where I will get the floating bridge intonation set and the nut filed to allow for compliance with action tolerances.

Thanks again, you guys rock!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 29, 2023 17:59:43 ago (+2/-0)

So far so good. They've been great crowds.

Filing from the bottom of the nut is possible, but great care must be used to file it evenly. I only do that when I'm sizing a complete replacement nut.

Remember to take a pencil and put some graphite in the nut slots. This will help with tuning stability, as the strings are less likely to bind.

While I don't do much work myself these days, it's best to have files that are the correct size. Take your time. Tune back up to tension often. File slowly because it's hard to put material back. If you do file too deeply you can mix your filings with CA glue (superglue) and build up the nut again so that you get another shot at filing it to the correct depth.

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 29, 2023 23:17:14 ago (+2/-0)

Right on man, glad to hear that! Again, thanks for the filing tips. I didn't get to it this weekend. Had the girl over for quite a while, and spent time moving things around, cleaning, getting ready for her inevitable move into this apartment. She must really love me if she wants to move in here! This complex is dumpy, not the worst I've seen but still. It's nothing like the free rent and comfort one could get at ma 'n pa's upper middle class home. She's mentioned how she doesn't know how she'll fit her things in here, because I have so many amps... I don't want to get rid of gear but I would if I had to. There are some pieces I won't part with. So, I'll be moving - maximizing the usage of floor space- consolidating.

She's a sweetheart so I don't expect much bitching about it. I'll wear headphones and be cool about it but I've also been upfront that I don't intend on cutting my practicing much. I'm pretty sure she'll be fine with it, but only time will tell. My ex wife would complain so much I didn't play for like six years except maybe once a month.

I'll take photos while I conduct the nut filing, maybe that'll show people what to do/what not to do. We could use some repair/replace content for the sub, anyway. Later!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 30, 2023 13:02:28 ago (+2/-0)

Look up Ted Woodford on YouTube. He does things the right way.

https://www.youtube.com/@twoodfrd

See also, Caleb Mills. He's still learning. I'm one of his Patreon supporters. (I support a handful of YouTube channels.)

I used to do all my own luthery work. I no longer do much of it.

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 30, 2023 17:58:38 ago (+2/-0)*

Subbed, Psionic Audio is awesome for amp/tube tech knowledge.

It occurred to me last night that the 57 has a 7.5" radius and I cannot accurately sand that curved nut-bottom. I will go from the top and sand down from there. I also use Gerry Hayes' book "Complete Guitar Wiring" printed in 2022 - it is a modern classic and has much more than wiring. If you know a young player who likes to tinker, Gerry is very clear, his writing is to-the-point and sometimes humorous. Would make a great gift at 30 bucks on scamazon.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 30, 2023 18:26:17 ago (+2/-0)

The slot that the nut sits in should be flat. If it's not, it'd be easier to make that flat than it'd be to sand to it. No, there's nothing wrong with filing your nut's slot flat. Use a straight edge and go slow. Worst case? You end up learning how to file a complete nut. But, it shouldn't make it much deeper. At a 7.5 radius, you're looking at a few thousands of an inch at that distance. Maybe 25 to 50/1000 of an inch.

But, the slot the nut fits in should be flat. I don't recall a situation where it wasn't reasonably flat.

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 1 point 1.5 yearsOct 31, 2023 23:33:43 ago (+1/-0)

I hadn't watched this one, thanks man. It's a good thing I ordered another nut. The one pictured is for a friend's tele that I've been messing with. The first strat nut is salvageable but idk, my files were super cheap and I got impatient. I hope these nomad ones are worth it. They seem pretty legit, any actual file will be better than the cheap shit I had laying around.

https://files.catbox.moe/ghtibk.jpg

Ordered these yesterday, I have a few other guitar books I've been meaning to read.

Starting next week I'll have plenty of time to read, until the tail end of winter. I'm looking forward to that!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 1.5 yearsNov 1, 2023 15:35:37 ago (+1/-0)

Those look like good files. Nomad makes good stuff - less expensive than StewMac. I actually prefer some StewMac tools but Nomad makes great stuff.

And books are awesome. Make sure you get a 'chord bible' type of book, if you haven't already. You can understand a lot by just flipping through them. They explain quite a bit of music theory without words. I have a giant library of music-related books, including years and years worth of periodicals.

Anybody know "which men can be women"? The parody to that Richmond song? I've been meaning to learn it to post it hear here. Can't be that hard!

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 4 points 1.5 yearsOct 27, 2023 21:34:13 ago (+4/-0)

I have not heard that one.

The Richmond song doesn't seem to be too hard to play, something like D, G and C I would guess

I've been smellin' my hole, I just got a sex change
It's already infected, it smells like shit and decay
A really good chance I'm gonna take my life one day
At least I'll get more attention than all those normie gays

it's a damn shame
what the world's gotten to
when a creature like me believes that it's true
that he can just wake up and not be a dude, but he is

livin' as new girl, with a Y chromosome
you ask which men can be women, i'll tell you which can
the ones who trade their pole for a hole

and that hole really stinks
and it's covered with goo
and it smells like a combo of roadkill and poop
if i don't dialate it, it will heal shut and fill in
tell me which men can be women

[instrumental]

there's a global mission to turn peepees to 'giners
they'll do it to minors, they don't care
lord, i got gigantic feet, but i cut off my meat
both of my butt cheeks are covered in hair
I still got an adam's apple the size of a planet
my name used to be craig, but I changed it to janet
got brainwashed by the internet, left holdin the bag
i cut my penis off, i could've just been a fag

it's a damn shame, what this world's gotten to
when a creature like me believes that it's true
that he can just wake up and not be a dude
but he is..oh he is

livin as a new girl, with a y chromosome
you ask which men can be women, i'll tell you which can
the ones who trade their pole for a hole
and that hole really stinks, yeah it's covered in goo
and it smells like a combo of roadkill and poop
if i don't dialate it, it will heal shut and fill in
tell me which men, can be women?

I been smellin my hole
I just got a sex change
Now I regret it
I should've just been fuckn gay
...just been fuckn gaaay..

WTF did I miss last night? LOL. Nice work! It was inevitable that somebody had to write the song cause it just had to be said.

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 2 points 1.5 yearsOct 28, 2023 19:36:41 ago (+2/-0)

lol it was a lot of fun but to be clear I did not write that, I have been wanting to learn it, though. I guess I was just ready to learn it, thought maybe a race to learn and post it would be fun. Although, I had the distinct advantage because I've been listening to it for a while.

Whoever actually wrote it and played it in that dress in the video above has earned my everlasting respect!

Her is one more song that Chris and I played at the party here the other night. Verles woman asked us to play a country song, so Chris played this. I am not sure what it is or whos song or anything. Chris guitar is out of tune, but I like the fills I did between the lyric lines while I was all drunk not even knowing what song I'm playing LoL Here's what I call Left Me Crying
