What is the purpose to actively seek downvotes?

You see knuckleheads who try to say the most outrageous things and get downvotes. They behave like contrarians. What is the purpose of that? Is there some value to negative validation?

I’ve read the responses so far, I should allow a few more but a picture is starting to present itself. It’s like crime, some people commit crimes because they have to, others because they like too. The “like to’s” seem to be the most prevalent. I can still change my mind, more data could change everything.

I think you should do it. Downvotes are a form of community moderation, and moderation logs should be public for transparency.

Do a trial run for downvotes on posts at least. If it ends up making things worse somehow, you can always remove it.
