This guy goes through a bunch of old tab books and demonstrates how horrid they really are. It's pretty entertaining in hindsight. I bet I still have half a dozen of them in a box somewhere...

No, Wickerman was many albums later. The version I have that includes The Trooper covers their first four albums combined. Iron Maiden through the Piece if Mind album I believe it was. There were tons of those shitty tab books in the 90s. It was extremely discouraging to try and learn from them as so many parts were just flat out wrong or they would use impossible chord fingerings. One of the Metallica books, don't remember the particular song, had you fretting something like the 9th fret on the A string and the 2nd fret on the G string. Or something similar.

I'm guessing whoever they had transcribing a lot of those songs back then wasn't a guitar player. Or they were just evil.

Not a lot of guitarists back then did much with the tab books. They'd just sign off on 'em after they were done, probably without even checking. They might do one song for a guitar magazine, maybe... The rest was all done by other people.

Some artists have been pretty good about it. Slash is one of the folks who have been pretty good, for example. It's one of the reasons I appreciate his work. Then, you have artists like Clapton who has probably spent almost zero time working with tab transcription.

Yeah, the guitar mags back then were way better than the tab books, I think. I had a couple boxes of em at one point. Wish I'd have saved those as opposed the those shitty tab books.

I actually still have a whole lot of 'em. I still subscribe to a few, though I really end up just skimming through them and then putting them away in the library. I have a lot of books and periodicals.

So many of those old tab books are just terrible. As bad or worse than the tabs you find on ultimateguitar. Anyone remember OLGA from back when the internet was useful?
