Well the whole point of this sub is to get people active on Aether, so you can/should just download it and be able to use the link I provided. I'm not even sure you can archive Aether posts because it's not on the internet the way most things are. I'll do a screen cap and edit this post though.

EDIT: Well I forgot what the post was and just remembered, here's the link to system's post: https://www.voat.xyz/viewpost?postid=625b0fb8ec31e

That's what I posted to the Voat board on Aether.

The only person on Aether who can delete your account is you.

Thanks

If people are using Aether's search tool, it might be easier to navigate to the above thread by pasting in the hash after /thread/ :

Which part of "download some software onto your computer to be a member" don't we all understand?

[ - ] MagicMushroom 0 points 2 yearsApr 27, 2022 13:02:21 ago (+0/-0)

Aether is Free Software. You can audit the code yourself to verify it is ok.

[ - ] we_kill_creativity [op] -1 points 2 yearsApr 17, 2022 09:46:54 ago (+0/-1)

What's your point? Do you actually use your computer without downloading software programs...?

[ - ] Reawakened 1 point 2 yearsApr 17, 2022 00:05:29 ago (+1/-0)

Link doesn't work.

[ - ] MagicMushroom 0 points 2 yearsApr 27, 2022 13:03:42 ago (+0/-0)

@Reawakened, thanks for trying. For an Aether link, you need an aether client, in the same way you need a TOR compliant client to open a .onion link.

[ - ] we_kill_creativity [op] -1 points 2 yearsApr 17, 2022 09:48:10 ago (+0/-1)

You need to have the Aether app downloaded, I believe. I don't think there is a browser based version of it.

[ - ] MagicMushroom 0 points 2 yearsApr 27, 2022 12:46:30 ago (+0/-0)

That is right. People seem to be locked into an http mentality. There are other protocols, for example, gemini, if you want to browse geminispace. In that case, you need a gemini compliant browser, for example LaGrange. I hope people do try Gemini too.

It is somewhat akin to package installers. You might use synaptic for .deb files, but npm (node package manager) for javascripts and perhaps pip for python packages. It is like people have never installed anything but a .deb here.

Anything cool on Gemini a person could look for?

[ - ] MagicMushroom 0 points 2 yearsApr 28, 2022 04:05:18 ago (+0/-0)

Gemini has an ambience like a quiet library. People there are ponderous and gemlogs (gemini blogs) are thoughtful. If you are fed up of the noise and crapware on the big internet, try the tildeverse.

AstroBotany is good fun. You have a garden there with plants you can water and feed. There is a public garden too, and you can help the wilting plants.

Some websites are now supported on gemini, for example the excellent Techrights:

Looks neat, thanks for pointing it out. Do you know, does LaGrange support the use of the AV1 video codec?

[ - ] AetherUser 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 22, 2022 15:24:46 ago (+0/-0)

No, it does not support AV1. (AV1 is great, by the way, and hopefully we shall all soon have AV1 encode hardware.)

What LaGrange will endeavour to do is open an AV1 link in an associated software package, like VLC or whatever you are using on your computer.

[ - ] we_kill_creativity [op] 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 22, 2022 18:49:00 ago (+0/-0)

and hopefully we shall all soon have AV1 encode hardware.

Soon can be a relative word. I know you don't have a crystal ball, but what's your estimation on how "soon" AV1 could become commonplace

What LaGrange will endeavour to do is open an AV1 link in an associated software package, like VLC or whatever you are using on your computer.

So if you had a video you were trying to stream on LaGrange it would attempt to open it in VLC on your computer and you'd end up watching it in VLC? I'm somewhat a noob to this, but theoretically couldn't a VLC...idk...plugin? be developed to be integrated into LaGrange so it would just play in LaGrange?

gay, switching platforms doesn't fix the real problems

[ - ] MagicMushroom 0 points 2 yearsApr 27, 2022 12:50:07 ago (+0/-0)

It is switching protocols, not simply moving to yet another http website.

In this case, Aether does directly fix the real problems, which come about due to centralization, proprietary infrastructure, lack of weak anonymity and reliance on an authority which has to be trusted.

You seem to not have investigated this at all, yet feel happy to misinform people.

[ - ] mikenigger 1 point 2 yearsApr 27, 2022 14:46:08 ago (+1/-0)

This idea of low to no moderation doesn't work, you can't maintain quality like some non-pozzed subreddits still do. Voat and aether are just an overreaction to shitty mods and admins, doesn't mean the answer is cutting them out entirely. This approach never worked, you have to maintain standards so it doesn't become a cesspool like the chans, not a single normie subverse would survive here because the mental patients are roaming free.

[ - ] MagicMushroom 0 points 2 yearsApr 27, 2022 15:16:31 ago (+0/-0)

Moderation is a complex issue.

Power Mods
One problem which Aether has attempted to solve is "Power Mods", people who grab and then abuse power over a community. Aether has provided for that possibility with a system whereby communities (subverses, as they are called on Voat) can impeach and vote out the moderator, if they don't agree with their actions. All moderation actions are open to view by the community. Impeachment like this doesn't work as intended when the communities are small, so hasn't fully been implemented, yet.

Curation
When Voat came to Aether, there were the usual calls to introduce censorship and banning. I don't think anybody was banned in the end. All the accounts who wanted bans were visible though. Equally, when so-called 'Progressives' came to Aether after a purge at Reddit, they were ignored too. Things sorted themselves out quite well.

Pr0n
Voat has eluded this problem by being text-only. By default, you don't see thumbnails, though this can be changed in the settings. Aether doesn't host images, so there aren't any issues to worry about like that.

Junk*
Low quality content disappears after 6 months without interaction. Spam and poor content don't remain visible when they go stale.

Aether has worked well with low - no moderation because in Aether's case it hasn't been necessary. I agree with you though that curation of content is important and may become needed in future. The best way to approach it, I think, is to conceptualize it as deliberate attacks by spammers, who receive a financial reimbursement and who are equipped with bots. The Whitepaper for Plebbit has had some discussion relating to this. The proposed approach is to use (self-devised) CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing Tests) and community activism. Aether's approach is to make spam costly by requiring a computational task for every interaction, which could be defeated by incentivizing the bots.

If you see a platform as doomed due to its inherent flaws and vulnerabilities, you don't want to put in the downvoting labour required to delay its inevitable destruction. One problem is the mentality of the users, who want only to enjoy content provided by others and not to do any moderation or pave the way for others on a better engineered platform.

Plebbit does look promising. https://github.com/plebbit/whitepaper/discussions/2
https://gab.com has really taken off lately too, it is like Voat now in many ways.

[ - ] AetherUser 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 22, 2022 15:28:22 ago (+0/-0)

On Aether at the moment low moderation is the norm as there is currently little need for moderation. As the number of Aether users keeps growing, the moderation system there will come into its own.

[ - ] we_kill_creativity [op] -1 points 2 yearsApr 17, 2022 09:47:39 ago (+0/-1)

Elaborate.

What did you say that would suggest I shouldn't try out a new platform?
