Is it the trolls themselves? This worries me more than anything TBH. It tells me that free speech cannot survive on it's own and needs to be coddled. If I have to coddle free legal speech in order to have a successful site, then the experiment has been concluded with an answer of 'no'.

Voat was a special place at a special time; you can't really take the phenomenon of Voat out of the context of its earliest phase or the Pao-phase of Reddit. There was a voltage in the air back then. After the 2020 election fraud came and went, together with Old Voat going down, I think a lot of the more intelligent users realized a few things, namely how fucked things really are, and that future attempts at a Voat-like community were running on fumes for many reasons. It wasn't just the admin and costs; I think there was a kind of lurking sense of futility.
It's useful to keep oneself updated on the 'news', but the best thing we can do physically, mentally, financially (etc.) is to spend more time IRL.
I think a lot of us can recall an experience where some old friend tried to recreate a moment - say, getting a bunch of old high school buddies together - and though everybody might have gone through the motions, everybody understood that you couldn't recreate a moment from a phase that had already died. To me, that's what all of this is like. If people want a community like old voat back the issue is community itself, the biggest issue with voat and poal and image boards, places with free speech is that you will always have a caustic crowd and that leads to community corrosion and a purity spiral unless you have a constant or high influx of new users 4chan has the exact opposite problem of talk.lol eternal september, too many users coming in constantly eroding the culture so that every few years the site culture changes almost entirely.
Voat had a healthy influx for years but the deathspiral started after Christchurch and the site locked down. Putt probably refused to raise funds for a government psyop or invest anymore brainspace in a dying project.
When voat died the community split because poal had strict moderation with a generally chill admin who like Putt would go off rails and refuse to admit mistakes, Putt had enough people to keep him honest, it seems AOU doesn't but that strict moderation kept trolls out and impeded the corrosive effects of a free speech site but the purity spiral still hit. After talk.lol became a bit too corrosive the qtards became a new corrosive force with purchase on a choking poal and now user counts on bot sites dwindle. Too little moderation on one too much on the other but the community in either case has abdicated responsibility, communities themselves need to throw the smackdown at trolls, spammers, saboteurs, and retards but also need to have breathing room to tell moderation or admins they are doing a bad job or their policies don't work or are counter productive or inefficient there is also an issue with purity spirals and hypocrisy but seeing as both site's communities are too far down the spiral to be told of their flagrant hypocrisy ill just ignore that one.
If it isn't obvious the people who would slap down authority stayed here and are increasingly afraid to hassle the admin for fear he just pulls the plug and they got banned off poal because after being incessantly hassled AOU just bans all dissent and treats poal like his personal hugbox. The people who would police community went to poal because active moderation saved them the trouble for a time. AOU's no downvote rule has backfired tremendously though as the qtard plague which has hit every settles there now because the infestation can't be squashed with simple user driven methods and ao it drives off users just like it drove people off old voat.

The realest solution is creating a synthesis with user created boards/subs and the owners chose how much imageboard versus how much content agregation.
How do you synthesize 4chan and reddit while maximizing their strengths and minimizing weaknesses?
You would need a fair sum of money and users to find out.

All of the major points have been hit on here, except for one. Why should any user dedicate time, energy, and passion into a platform that they know won't be permanent? There are refugees here that have bounced between 4 platforms. From Reddit, to Voat, to Poal, to Talk... That's all that these platforms have proven to be. I didn't know much about Q, got curious and went to that sub. I hung out awhile, but soon realized that the Qtards were a lost cause. However, the 'negative' interaction between Qtards and other members of Voat got me interested in looking at other stuff. Soon I wasn't even bothering with the Qtard circle-jerks as I had found much more interesting, and realistic, stuff to interact with.
I personally like the site and hope it stays for many many years. If you want it to grow it needs advertisement. I presume people would prefer not to risk bringing in strangers who might shit up the place. The bigger the attention the more those with an active investment in destroying a nice place like this take notice. If you want a helping hand on the code side of things talk to the userbase. I have a feeling its a mix of reasons, as many complicated questions curtail complicated or mixed answers.
But the ones that stick out in my life are, the tiresome feeling that yes we are exercising our freedom of speech but we are doing so in basically am echo chamber. How many of us are speaking on this site to people that are on the fence? Or that are full blown crazy liberal but just maybe we may change their minds. Also, many of the people who were undecided are more or less in turtle mode, not wishing to share with anyone, their personal opinions. The other is time and energy. Many of us here are seeing the pattern of whats to come and are doing what we can to prepare ourselves and our families, to keep them fed, warm, clothed and homed in a secure home on a secured piece of land. That simply takes time and energy.
Those of us preparing are not going to share too much of what we are doing in preparation. As that may compromise our situation. We are all very aware of the sneaky cowards who hide amongst honest and good wholesome people/users, waiting for a slip up so they can "DOX" them and cancel culture takes care of the rest. Personally, it isnt really fear, its more that I see and think of all ive done, effort time and money and personal sacrifice, and i see that the possibility of having all of that taken away or even a portion destroyed... thats a hard consequence to be ok with, when i also know its not just me i may risk, but my family and close friends, as we all rely on one another now and more so later.

It's useful to keep oneself updated on the 'news', but the best thing we can do physically, mentally, financially (etc.) is to spend more time IRL.
I think a lot of us can recall an experience where some old friend tried to recreate a moment - say, getting a bunch of old high school buddies together - and though everybody might have gone through the motions, everybody understood that you couldn't recreate a moment from a phase that had already died. To me, that's what all of this is like. We're a bit older now, a bit more hardened over with calcification from the same shit happening over and over again, with the same commentary appearing here over and over again.
At some point, you've got to spend more time trying to keep your dream alive out there, because the reunion party that fell flat gets more depressing the longer you stay.

Voat is small, I would argue kept small, because it needs to reform on new platforms. The community began on Reddit, and had to leave. Then voat.co closed, and now voat.xyz is being undermined.
We need to look at the underlying failings, recognize them and establish an enduring presence on a platform which is able to support:
- Anonymity - Needed for Free Speech
- Distributed Hosting - So there is no throttle point to choke and extinguish the community
- Free Software Licence - So we can a) Use b) audit c) improve d) share the code for the platform

Voat had a healthy influx for years but the deathspiral started after Christchurch and the site locked down. Putt probably refused to raise funds for a government psyop or invest anymore brainspace in a dying project.
When voat died the community split because poal had strict moderation with a generally chill admin who like Putt would go off rails and refuse to admit mistakes, Putt had enough people to keep him honest, it seems AOU doesn't but that strict moderation kept trolls out and impeded the corrosive effects of a free speech site but the purity spiral still hit. After talk.lol became a bit too corrosive the qtards became a new corrosive force with purchase on a choking poal and now user counts on bot sites dwindle. Too little moderation on one too much on the other but the community in either case has abdicated responsibility, communities themselves need to throw the smackdown at trolls, spammers, saboteurs, and retards but also need to have breathing room to tell moderation or admins they are doing a bad job or their policies don't work or are counter productive or inefficient there is also an issue with purity spirals and hypocrisy but seeing as both site's communities are too far down the spiral to be told of their flagrant hypocrisy ill just ignore that one.
If it isn't obvious the people who would slap down authority stayed here and are increasingly afraid to hassle the admin for fear he just pulls the plug and they got banned off poal because after being incessantly hassled AOU just bans all dissent and treats poal like his personal hugbox. The people who would police community went to poal because active moderation saved them the trouble for a time. AOU's no downvote rule has backfired tremendously though as the qtard plague which has hit every settles there now because the infestation can't be squashed with simple user driven methods and ao it drives off users just like it drove people off old voat.
After voat and 8chan fell from Christchurch the broader community has had wedges driven in by distance and subsequent purity spirals precluding variations on the same notions, no room for debate means no more debate and truth dies quietly as what was once whole splits like a starfish ripping itself apart.
Other factors like the ones discussed by others above and below all play parts but community dynamics have destabilized these sites and chilled engagement.
There is also the fact that content agregation sites have inherent sorts of community problems that require far more active moderation and rules and arent particularly great for community discourse writ large and image boards have their own flaws.
The realest solution is creating a synthesis with user created boards/subs and the owners chose how much imageboard versus how much content agregation.
How do you synthesize 4chan and reddit while maximizing their strengths and minimizing weaknesses?
You would need a fair sum of money and users to find out.

I think part of, if not most, of why we're currently demoralized is that a lot of what we did worked. Not that hollywood movies got based...but that people largely stopped watching those movies. The comment sections on youtube are now largely based. Being based became pretty popular. At least online, if not in the real world and still we got Trump and corony.
The feeling I have is one of "Wow...we actually showed everyone what's going on and who and how and why and yet...there they go on the same path..." I personally went from trying to save the world to trying to save MY world.
I also have reached a point where I fundamentally don't give a shit if 75% of humanity suffers at this point, in fact, they've shown they really, REALLY deserve it. I would go so far to say that was the most fundamental reason for the Trump and Corony operations...to give "the masses" the chance to show they deserve it and for us to see it.
It's like I could fight for humanity, but I already did. Most of my energy these days comes from having the gumption to fight for my own since of dignity and that of the small group of people I think deserve my efforts. And it's a VERY short list of people.

I have a feeling its a mix of reasons, as many complicated questions curtail complicated or mixed answers.
But the ones that stick out in my life are, the tiresome feeling that yes we are exercising our freedom of speech but we are doing so in basically am echo chamber. How many of us are speaking on this site to people that are on the fence? Or that are full blown crazy liberal but just maybe we may change their minds.
Also, many of the people who were undecided are more or less in turtle mode, not wishing to share with anyone, their personal opinions.
The other is time and energy. Many of us here are seeing the pattern of whats to come and are doing what we can to prepare ourselves and our families, to keep them fed, warm, clothed and homed in a secure home on a secured piece of land. That simply takes time and energy.
Those of us preparing are not going to share too much of what we are doing in preparation. As that may compromise our situation. We are all very aware of the sneaky cowards who hide amongst honest and good wholesome people/users, waiting for a slip up so they can "DOX" them and cancel culture takes care of the rest. Personally, it isnt really fear, its more that I see and think of all ive done, effort time and money and personal sacrifice, and i see that the possibility of having all of that taken away or even a portion destroyed... thats a hard consequence to be ok with, when i also know its not just me i may risk, but my family and close friends, as we all rely on one another now and more so later.
You are doing a great job, places for freedom of speech are important, but maybe try to be happy with what you've accomplished thus far. I know all of us are truly happy.

putt didnt care about the growth of the site. how do i know this? i ran 3 subverses and one of them was making alot of noise in the google rankings (V/CRIMENEWS)and as soon as that began to happen....bam putt delisted the site from google
to me the old voat was nothing more than a honeypot of some sort. it was never about free speech or site growth
