Stocked up on meat.

submitted by Yargiyankooli to preppers 2.2 yearsMar 1, 2022 20:20:55 ago (+32/-0)     (preppers)

Inflation is nuts right now. We went food shopping for everything but meat last week and it cost us $130. We generally only buy raw vegetables, dairy, pickled products, and minimal snack food.

I finally pulled the trigger on a chest freezer and $200 worth of Costco meats.

I suggest you all do the same.

We already have a years worth of food prepped. If we started that now, it would be too expensive.

I just got one. I have to put it outside, which sucks in FL.
I built a box out of 2” styrofoam, wrapped it in 24oz fiberglass woven roving and gel coated it. Cut out where the vents and knob are. Doubled up the thickness on the lid. It is likely more insulated than if it were in the AC inside the house.

Now I’m going to fill that bitch with grouper and hogfish!

What are you missing out on for the year? I bought a shit ton of rice and pasta and beans. Canned meat and canned vegetables, sugar, honey, salt, seasonings. I would say it costs less than 1.5k for two people. Or at least it did when I bought it 5 months ago!!

Don't wait, I feel so much better knowing I have it.

Commercial canned goods are good much longer than the expiration date. Thats actually the same with almost anything.

They literally last for decades as long as the can is intact.

You got alternative cooking means? In case of loss of power? I have bottled gas to cook with normally but have 2 extra full bottles and also have woodburner with 2 yrs of wood after the storms last year and this. Not everyone has the space for that though

As long as the power grid holds, it will not ruin.

I'm interested in canned and shelf-stable foods.

It's like a nuclear attack, you just need to survive the thinning period of a few months.

[ - ] MaryXmas 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 11:49:25 ago (+0/-0)

We could use a few thinning periods in this country. Lots of fat available to be trimmed.

Yeah, we are stocked for a year per person on shelf stable foods. This I'd not really meat for the Apocalypse but preparing for inflation to make it difficult to afford meat.

Canning isn't that difficult just labor and time consuming. The initial cost to buy what you need isn't terrible. All you need is fresh veggies or meats and there you go.

The same Costco meat shop that usually costs me about $250 just cost me $357 yesterday.

Buying it by the 1/2 or 1/4 from a local farmer is about half the cost, and helps struggling farmers.

[ - ] Yargiyankooli [op] 2 points 2.2 yearsMar 1, 2022 21:29:51 ago (+2/-0)

When you say by the 1/2, you mean half of the animal? I would be happy to do that. Gotta find a local farmer.

What are you buying from Costco?

We get steaks, the wagyu ground beef, lamb roast (I cut it into like 12 portions), chicken breasts and thighs, and we got pork chops today although we never buy much pork usually.

[ - ] 1Icemonkey 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 1, 2022 21:44:40 ago (+1/-0)

Pork is awesome. You can do anything with pork that you can do with beef, and more. Best part is it’s cheap as fuck.

[ - ] Yargiyankooli [op] 2 points 2.2 yearsMar 1, 2022 21:47:47 ago (+2/-0)

Agreed, I like pork, but I count calories and it is easier to lose weight on chicken and red meat.

Gotta love the price though.

In the end times I look forward to some nice squirrel

Ah man, I love the carnitas, but your center cut pork loin chops have no fat at all. Super lean.

[ - ] 3Whuurs 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 1, 2022 22:32:19 ago (+1/-0)

Ya 1/2 the animal.
I typically get steaks, chicken breast, wings and ground bison (highly recommend). But it’s way cheaper by the Side and you get to choose your steak thickness or cuts.
Most local butchers will probably arrange that for you but they’re typically more expensive because they’re set up for retail.
But most farms will offer this.
I try to NEVER recommend FaceBerg, but marketplace is particularly well suited to find these local farmers, and most are dying to do business that way and often even have relationships with a butcher for you.

At the beginning of pandemic times, I saw a freezer truck sitting outside the mall with a bunch of people in line. Turns out that it was a delivery truck of some kind who couldn't deliver and they were selling cases of individually wrapped meats. Steaks (of ALL fuckin' kinds), chicken, nuggets, you name it. Bought two HUGE cases for like $200. If things had been normal, I might not have bought it but I knew what was coming (this was before anyone even knew what was going to happen, really).

Dude, I haven't even eaten half of it. Actually, I think I have a photo set posted of my food preps here somewhere.

I stopped grocery shopping back in December because fuck inflation. The only things I'm even starting to run low of are hot dogs (the dog gets some kind of meat every day - I've gone through 12 packs since December, well, the dog has), chicken (down to maybe 15 pounds from 25, again because of dog), and eggs (I have 4 dozen and that's about, eh, maybe half of what I started with but I used 3 dozen to make some freeze dried instant breakfasts - eggs, cheese, sausage, gravy, biscuits, totaling about 1.5 gallons of food, freeze dried and jarred up).

[ - ] La_Chalupacabra 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 1, 2022 21:58:10 ago (+1/-0)

What's your process for freeze-drying?

[ - ] totes_magotes 4 points 2.2 yearsMar 1, 2022 22:41:47 ago (+4/-0)

I bought a freeze dryer. It does it all for me. They're just not very cheap. Look up "Harvest Right."

[ - ] Belrick 4 points 2.2 yearsMar 1, 2022 23:36:10 ago (+4/-0)

This is one area many new preppers are fuking up.

We can all produce a ton of food but they much harder work is in presrrving/ preparing the food and too many have no plans at all.

Smoking food.
High fat mixes like Permican.
Canning.
Freeze drying.

[ - ] totes_magotes 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 07:19:36 ago (+0/-0)

The first thing I did when I got my freeze drier was use it nonstop to freeze dry all the kinds of foods you either can't get or would have to sell your organs to stock up on. A solid one-third of my food stock is freeze dried.

[ - ] Belrick 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 1, 2022 23:42:02 ago (+1/-0)

So you use jarring? What's your thoughts on vacuum sealers?

[ - ] KeepPoal4fags 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 04:48:20 ago (+0/-0)

Vac sealing is awesome for lots of things, especially stuff you're going to freeze, like bread ect. If you purge out the oxygen and replace it with noble gas then grains and such can be stored for years without refrigeration.

[ - ] totes_magotes 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 07:17:41 ago (+0/-0)

I do canning in a very limited capacity. Vacuum sealers are the shit. But they're also not as good as canning. You're not going to throw food in a jar, vacuum seal it, pop it on a shelf, eat it 6 months later and not die.

[ - ] frankenham 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 02:01:01 ago (+1/-0)

Just curious but say the power went out in a SHTF situation, what do you do with all the meat you have in your freezer?

[ - ] AdolfHitler 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 03:16:38 ago (+1/-0)

It's called generators and stocking up on fuel. Get a flex fuel generator because while gas spikes, propane is pretty cheap. Battery backup with solar isn't a bad idea either.

[ - ] HonkyMcNiggerSpic 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 13:17:17 ago (+0/-0)

propane cheap?? In what country do you live?

[ - ] AdolfHitler 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 4, 2022 00:46:00 ago (+0/-0)

In comparison to gas? It's less than a dollar a gallon.

[ - ] HonkyMcNiggerSpic 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 01:38:44 ago (+1/-0)*

Get a few of those 50lb bags of pinto beans and rice from one of those amish stores. I'm not gonna prep and when SHTF I'm just gonna take preppers shit by listening for generators. When the power and water goes out, and no gas anywhere, all that meats gonna ruin. If you run a generator, raiders will hear it and take yo shit. oh, and make sure you stock up on antibiotics and pain meds 'cause I'm gonna need those too.

I spent 3k on half a cow, grass fed, local rancher. Another 700 on a freezer to store it.

Got 8 chickens left, down from 12 from near the start of the pandemic, all are good egg producers. Haven't started to preserve the eggs, but have been using surplus to buy good will from proper neighbors.

About a 1.5 year supply of shit similar to patriots pantry, a wall of mountain house freeze fried bags in bulk boxes (I like these on hikes), and stores of salt, flower, rice, beans, and additional seeds.

My farming however always turns out like shit, never seems to be enough time to tend it properly, down to simpler things like garlic and potatoes mostly.

Also recently retrofitted the panty, taking out some false walls and making a ton more room for general stock, allowing for a good doubling of misc supplies, spices, etc.

All is going well overall, baring external circumstances.

[ - ] Shotinthedark 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 00:59:49 ago (+1/-0)

You got ripped off bro. At the most 1/2 cow is around 2k and that's the I don't like you price.

[ - ] mannerbund 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 10:17:31 ago (+0/-0)

450 Lbs, puts it at $6.667/lb, which is after the butchering fees. Cheaper to get grain fed, and probably cheaper elsewhere in the country. Either way I know where the cow came from, I know the person who raised it, and I supported my local community to obtain it.- No regrets.

[ - ] HonkyMcNiggerSpic 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 13:16:41 ago (+1/-0)

Redneck here. In a SHTF situation, cows will be worthless. Get pigs. They have like 16 at a time. bacon. Chickens are a must too. Have a pond full of fish, as well. and an apple orchard helps so that you have deer to pop.

[ - ] mannerbund 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 18:14:36 ago (+0/-0)

I've family with pigs, they're pretty neat animals. More family with a small orchard, the trees are young so the dear do cause them some problems. Fencing has helped keep them at bay while the trees mature some more though.

Ponds and fish are a bit more of a problem, we are near a river, but it's a few miles to hike down. Riding a bike wouldn't be too bad, but you are a lot less defensible on a bike than on foot.

[ - ] mannerbund 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 10:15:50 ago (+1/-0)*

I've 5kw of solar power which is generally sufficient to power the fridge/freezer no problem. A few days of low light can be bypassed, and long-term no light would be a problem.

Edit: I guess if it was early on, I could run the generator too on dark days.

I've still got about 40kgs of venison vacuum sealed in the freezer from last years hunt and the season's about a month from starting again this year, I make a lot of jerky and corned venison with the meat. sambar deer are everywhere here

[ - ] 2017Fallout 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 03:52:28 ago (+0/-0)

You shound have some alternative means of processing that meat in case of power outage. Not sure if you can can it. Maybe salt it?

[ - ] mannerbund 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 10:18:20 ago (+1/-0)

I do have stores of salt and can salt it and dry it and seal it.

[ - ] Shotinthedark 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 2, 2022 00:51:21 ago (+0/-0)

Find local farms and buy from them. Save up a few $ and but 1/2 a cow or a whole pig or sheep. You'll need a large freezer or a few small ones.
