Thought I'd share a few pics of some (only some) of my preps

submitted by totes_magotes to preppers 3.7 yearsOct 19, 2021 21:18:20 ago (+34/-0)     (preppers)

Today, I'm focusing on the food part. Later, I'll post different preps. My hope is that we can discuss certain preps, why, and whatnot.

So... first up, my grocery store.

https://pic8.co/sh/v1r47Y.png

Carts are $79 to $120 depending on what model you get. Stocking it up was hella expensive but took place over the span of 2.5 years by buying two of everything I needed at any time and then buying extra of things I didn't normally stock. I have no idea how much I've spent on these groceries but I'd estimate maybe ... $1000? More? In any case, I have food enough to last me a year easily but I'm planning that in a bug-in scenario, I'll have a few people helping watch my back so I need to feed them too. Which means two more people drags that down to about 4 months. Also great if unemployment hits.

From left to right, we have:

1. Spices, condiments, juices, drinks, coffee, carton milk, gatorade, soda. Comfort foods go a long way in the mental department when things go to shit.

2. Canned food. Soup, veggies, pork and beans, and so on.

3. Baking and starches. Mashed potatoes, ramen, flour, sugar, pasta, and a few jars of freeze dried veggies, canned meat also.

4. Freeze dried goods and water. I have a freeze dryer. Things here range from freeze dried meat, shelf stable meat, freeze dried pizza, freeze dried fruit and veggies. Freeze dried ice cream and cookie dough are here too.

In the background and the next photo:

https://pic8.co/sh/RQsfzn.png

The battery for my solar backup. This will power most of the house for just shy of three days assuming it's dark and deeply overcast (not generating power). The can of soup is for size reference.

On to (some of) the frozen stuff...

https://pic8.co/sh/L8OCNg.png

Inventory (not shown) is on the freezer door

This is one of three units I have. This one is a freezer, the other two are refrigerators. This one is mostly meat, milk, bread with a few other tidbits. That top shelf there is almost exclusively steaks and hotdogs.

The second shelf is various other meats including pork and chicken.

The next shelf down is milk (4 gallons), chicken that I fucked up and bought twice as much as I thought I was (for a total of 20 pounds of frozen chicken), tomato juice from the garden, more meat.

Bottom, behind the grate: breads. Bagels, bread, english muffins, and so on.

Door: Meat, tomato sauce and home made spaghetti sauce, pork, cheese, read-to-eat biscuits, stocks and broths.

The next photo is a pic of the water I have stockpiled just for the toilet should the mains go down: https://pic8.co/sh/wm2vY1.png

You don't store drinkable water in milk jugs.

And finally, puppy tax: https://pic8.co/sh/sYE1Ua.png

She's a West German Shepherd and growing like a weed at 5 months old. I'm slowly introducing her to schutzhund training. In short, protection and guard work and many police and military dogs are not only West German Shepherds but also go through the same training. She likes long walks, sticks, her tennis ball, and is obsessed with feet. Sorry fellas, she's mine so go find your own lady. I've had to teach her to bark, bite. She picks up on most things I teach her in about 5 minutes (along with hand signals) but requires a lot of reinforcement on some of them. She's still too bitey and hyper to learn "down" but sit and "paw" are second nature to her now. Also gasp and "what's that" will get her barking. I'm training her "hide and seek" and when she finds me, she has to bark before she gets praise. This not only exercises her mind but teaches her to observe hiding places and alert me if people are present and staying still.

Edit: Fucking catbox. Updated photos

I'm sorta surprised you don't have a few hundred pounds of dried beans & rice. Staple foods that cook well with your freeze dried meat & veggies.

[ - ] totes_magotes [op] 5 points 3.7 yearsOct 19, 2021 21:39:47 ago (+5/-0)

I have some rice, some beans. The problem is that it's a food that requires a lot of water and high heat to cook properly. I decided to go with freeze dried and canned. Freeze dried is light, doesn't usually require any prep work. Canned food is already pre-cooked. Just open and eat.

Also, I fucking hate the shit out of rice and beans. Only prep food you'll eat.

[ - ] Rotteuxx 5 points 3.7 yearsOct 19, 2021 21:50:49 ago (+5/-0)

Fair enough, I stockpile those with a long term mindset though. No special storage requirements & will keep you alive a long time when everything runs out & a dustbowl hits.

I have a 1600 square foot garden plot every year. There's a fair amount of potatoes in the preps. Potatoes are incredibly awesome.

There's also the fact you can ferment them and distill alcohol for fuel/party liquor. Assuming you have water and firewood, anyway.

Where are your amino acids and trace minerals? Butter and potatoes contain all the nutrients the body requires.

I was repeating what my history books told me about how the Irish population exploded before the potato famine. Googling potatoes says they indeed have amino acids. I thought you needed meat or dairy for amino acids to produce testosterone?

I have never met a manly vegan. All male vegans look like they are dying in real life. They all seem insane too. There has never been a vegan culture before very recent modern times in the west where supplements can even keep you alive. There is always some broth, or cheese, or eggs in there.

Perhaps there are different amino acids in potatoes compared to meat and dairy? Something is not adding up.

I don't think the guy sitting on 100lbs of beans realizes what it takes to actually eat said beans and what it does to you.

[ - ] paul_neri -2 points 3.7 yearsOct 19, 2021 23:55:42 ago (+2/-4)

"what it [eating beans] does to you"

Are you suggesting there's something bad about being a bean-eater? Don't say they make you fart a lot because I think that could be a myth.

My main meal has been beans for nearly 30 years and I like to think that is why I, as an old git, am so strong, healthy and probably virile.

[ - ] paul_neri 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 04:09:27 ago (+1/-1)

Yes everyone smirks when I say I live on a diet of chilli beans (1 tin a day) but flattus doesn't seem to be an issue for me, at least. [raving about myself] People have been incredulous that I seem happy eating a tin of beans a day but my body seems to have adjusted to them and I get anxious if I go without that tin of beans.

[ - ] MaryXmas 2 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 05:52:15 ago (+2/-0)

Once you eat them on a regular basis, you gut biome knows how to process them. If you never eat beans, yes you might explode like a balloon.

[ - ] Version6 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 08:59:48 ago (+0/-0)

Coffee, actually, is my comfort drink. The soda is mostly for others or when a quick drinkable pep-food-drink is needed. The gatorade is hell on teeth but is healthier than most of the other drinks there. Coffee is also an appetite suppressant. If shit goes south and eating becomes a limited option, coffee will help with the hunger pangs.

Caffeine... puts me to sleep. I've drunk full mugs of espresso and gone straight to sleep. Energy drinks do nothing for me.

[ - ] Rotteuxx 5 points 3.7 yearsOct 19, 2021 21:47:24 ago (+5/-0)*

I've dropped all drinks like Gatorade for these instead:

It's pedialyte for adults, gets you rehydrated with a good balance of electrolytes.

They're cheaper on Amazon compared to their website. 12.95cad for a tube, 20 tablets for 10 doses @ 1.29$ each. Good fucking deal imo.

There's a slight fizzy taste when it's fresh, just a cup of water for best taste.

Or you could just get an HTMA test and know exactly what all your vitamin, mineral and toxin levels are. And take exactly what you need with no waste on stuff you don’t.
Like most people have no idea 80+% of the world is actually ODing on vitamin E.

[ - ] Rotteuxx 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 10:55:45 ago (+0/-0)

Pretty sure those won't be available when shtf...plus those levels vary all the time unless you have a very stable diet.

[ - ] 3Whuurs 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 18:24:11 ago (+0/-0)

Well the point is to get it now as a prep. And your levels don’t just swing wildly for no reason. Instead of wasting time and resources trying to guess what you need and trying to fill it with whatever you’re able to scavenge for in a SHTF, you can understand your whole system and why you may be short or overloaded on certain things.
Either way, it’ll be way easier to guess and understand your levels after you get that all tested.
A decent HTMA will also tell you about which foods produce histamine responses in your system, foods that you may not even know you’re reacting to, as well as the overall state of your endocrine and adrenal systems.
Having this level of understanding now, would be beneficial for years to come, and help you place better value on different items in a future unstable diet scenario. And that’s not even including the fact that you almost certainly have issues that need to be healed and corrected, that can be done with diet. So you can basically turn your food into medicine for a short period of time, and that would be a permanent solution to certain issues going forward.

What the fuck dude. I don't even "prep" and I'd be better off than you in an emergency. Don't you know anything about nutrition?
Stock up on rice, beans, peanut butter.... but get LARD and BEEF TALLOW. It's cheap as fuck and super calorie dense. That shit will keep you alive. What is that in those photos, a bunch of veggies and tomato sauce?

[ - ] MaryXmas 2 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 05:56:19 ago (+2/-0)

Get good quality lard and tallow though. I process my own from free range beef and heritage breed hog. Love it, love it.
I agree, I am seeing a lot of processed foods that I would want to avoid if I was trying to stay alive.

[ - ] totes_magotes [op] 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 08:20:12 ago (+0/-0)

Mate, fresh foods aren't shelf stable. You have exactly two options for preserving and prepping limited ingredient foods for long-term shelf stable storage

1. Canned (which is processed)
2. Freeze dried

I have both. You can't see the full shelf of freeze dried food because it's furthest to the right in the photo but it's not a small amount. Nearly all of that is single ingredient foods.

Canned food, regardless of contents, have several benefits to fresh, freeze dried foods.

1. Fortifications. They may be processed but that also means that nutrients such as vitamins, etc are added to the food. This will help prevent dietary imbalances if you have nothing else to eat and have to life off of your canned ravioli for 2 months. It's not perfect but it's better than getting problems like scurvy because you suddenly switched to nothing but single-ingredient foods without options except to forage for pine needles, rose hips to get your vitamin C.
2. Canned food lasts forever until the integrity of the metal is compromised. Freeze dried food will last about 25 years. Canned food is forever.
3. Freeze dried is lighter, canned food can be used as a weapon. Obviously not literally unless you're fucked. The point here is that canned food is tough. Throw it in a box, in the car, roll down the road and who cares. Freeze dried has a limited amount of punishment it can take before the bag is compromised or the contents are turned into a powder and you get broccoli flavored mush when it's time to eat.

[ - ] totes_magotes [op] 1 point 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 08:28:02 ago (+1/-0)

Why even do that? Just go hunting now, live off the fat of the land, lulz. Get fucking real.

As noted elsewhere, beans and rice are high-water prep foods. They require a lot of time and energy to prepare. When you are having to focus on other issues, spending an hour to cook your food is a LOT of time you don't have to spend when you need to be watching security integrity, watching events, working with your neighborhood to ensure safety, getting any supplies you might need suddenly (maybe to repair a broken window or whatever).

Further, if you have to bug out with limited notice, beans and rice are deadweight because you're not going to remember to pack 20 gallons of water to eat a food you can't prepare with limited supplies and wood. All that food in the photos can be thrown in the boxes and crates you kind of start to see in the photo and then thrown in the truck, car, whatever.

Anything in plastic is likely to spoil over a long enough timeline because plastic is porous. Anything with oil in it (like peanut butter) is likely to be rancid by the time you need it. Unless it's canned.

Hence, canned and freeze dried with a smaller amount of traditional "every day" foods.

You might be better with this idea of top-tier nutrition but I'm working out of the perspective of "every day" and "sudden mobility." All I have to do if I have to bug out without much notice is grab the freeze dried shit and throw in the car or truck and I'm gone. I don't even have to struggle with how heavy it is.

And if it's a scenario where everything has collapse, my house isn't going to be safe after a week anyway. If that. This food store is a catch-all scenarios prep.

[ - ] MaryXmas 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 16:08:39 ago (+0/-0)*

You could also raise your own chickens or goats. I see nothing wrong with hunting to fill the freezer. Figure out how to do it now, rather than waiting till you have no choice.
All valid points, I would just pick the organic and non-gmo canned foods, that's all.
Personally, I am not so worried about heating, at least where I am. Lots of trees and lumber. Making smoke or fire isnt ideal when people can see or smell it but if you need food, you might need a fire.

One thing I didn't see is alcohol. I have seen bourbon is good for bargaining and vodka can also clean wounds. Just an idea. It does look like a good setup, I would totally raid your house first.

Ps, you didn't get into firearms but you might look into big bore air rifles. A round is only a few cents and they can technically take down a deer (though it may not be pretty). I have a Hatsan 30 cal. Quiet, cheap and not tracked by the government. Shows up to your doorstep.

[ - ] totes_magotes [op] 1 point 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 17:39:39 ago (+1/-0)

I have just under one acre. There's only so much I can do plus I'm technically inside a city limit. Things get a little tough at that point. Your suggestion isn't invalid but it's not incredibly practical for me.

Alcohol is in my preps, just not with the food preps. With the exception of the food stores (because there's so much), nearly all of the rest of my preps are somehow integrated into what looks like a normal life. I do have alcohol for trade. I have tobacco for trade. I have cigarettes for trade. I have lighters for trade. Those are in other preps, however, or made to look like normal life.

I'm totally aware that having solar instantly makes my house a target. That's why there's boxes there (you can see a few of them) to load up quick and go. I'm ready to leave in less than an hour. Permanently.

Firearms will be posted about later. I don't have any air guns yet (unless you count BB gun which can take down tiny game if you're a really good shot) but it's always been at the top of my list. There are take-down air rifles which are good.

[ - ] MichaelStewart 1 point 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 19:02:19 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks for the info about the air rifles, sounds good.

[ - ] ShitsInHoneypots 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 22, 2021 04:01:12 ago (+0/-0)

Also, canned dog food. Cheaper and more nutritious than canned meats intended for humans. Contains organ meat also. One can of that shit is another day alive.

[ - ] totes_magotes [op] 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 22, 2021 07:04:58 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah, but if you're going to stock up on canned dog food for yourself, might as well just get canned human food and at least get a variety.

[ - ] ShitsInHoneypots 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 22, 2021 07:32:30 ago (+0/-0)

Any kind of plany matter is going to be really bad on its calorie to space ratio. They also take the body much more time and energy to process than meat. The only benefit of vegetables is vitamin C - so its essentially better to just have a vitamin C supplement available to take once a week.

Freeze drying your food is going to break down all of its fat content and leave only the protein, reducing its weight, but also its value to you in an emergency.

[ - ] totes_magotes [op] 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 22, 2021 08:06:48 ago (+0/-0)

It would be cool if you actually knew what the fuck you were talking about. Fat doesn't freeze dry so you don't freeze food with high fat content. You trim the fat off first.

The only benefit of vegetables is vitamin C

Fucking hwat? Ever heard of this thing called "FIBER"? It helps you shit and makes you feel full, helping you not eat all of your food.

They also take the body much more time and energy to process than meat

Again, fucking hwat? Sugar isn't meat and neither is bread but you'll digest those in a heartbeat. The digestion process starts in the mouth and saliva starts turning that directly into sugar before it even hits your stomach.

Please, stop and read up a little bit.

[ - ] ShitsInHoneypots 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 22, 2021 08:21:43 ago (+0/-0)

If you've ever gone on a plant-free diet, you'll realize fiber is the actual cause of all constipation, not the solution. Something not spoken of here enough is how jews have fucked up the west's conception of a proper diet.

[ - ] totes_magotes [op] 0 points 3.6 yearsOct 22, 2021 18:17:28 ago (+0/-0)

Again, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. I've been a vegetarian almost all of my life (but deliberately eat meat once a month or so so I don't get sick if I accidentally eat meat or have no choice). It's a pandemic so there's no such thing as a limited diet snowflake. I can tell you right now that if you're getting constipated from eating plants, it's because you're a fucking dumbass and don't know how to control yourself and manage what you eat. I've known three people who were lifelong vegetarians, one of whom never ate so much as a scrap of meat her entire life. What you're talking about is conspiratorial bullshit put out by people who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

Totes, forgive me if I missed it. Your electricity backup. Is it On Grid or Off Grid? This makes a MASSIVE difference. Is it IEEE 1547 compliant?

[ - ] totes_magotes [op] 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 07:58:51 ago (+0/-0)

My solar system is on-grid with a switch to disconnect completely and go off-grid. As such, it's compliant with required codes in my area.

[ - ] Sturmgeschutz 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 10:33:15 ago (+0/-0)

Awesome. Great job.

[ - ] Merlynn 2 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 01:07:53 ago (+2/-0)

Here's the thing. Stocking up is good. Sustainability is better. Stock will run out. Being able to get more will never "run out".

Read the thread, he’s got both.

Solar and battery ate a great thing if you can get it. 20 years of guaranteed energy, charge batteries slaughter cattle without spoilage, etc

What's up with the jew juice? (((Pepsi)))

[ - ] totes_magotes [op] 2 points 3.7 yearsOct 19, 2021 22:27:15 ago (+2/-0)

It's soda. I'm not prepping just for me. I'm prepping for two other friends who may show up in a collapse scenario. They're the soda fans.

[ - ] 1Icemonkey 0 points 3.7 yearsOct 19, 2021 23:33:00 ago (+1/-1)

People who rely on these weak jewish concoctions are exactly the fats and lames you don’t need around when SHTF.

[ - ] Master_Foo 3 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 05:28:49 ago (+3/-0)

You need at least one slow fatty in your survival group. He's the one you trip so everyone else can run away from the Zombies.

[ - ] totes_magotes [op] 1 point 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 08:33:41 ago (+1/-0)

They are eyes and can watch security.

They are arms and can carry what I can't.

They are brains and can have a different idea better than I think of.

They may be "fats and lames" but even fats and lames can be more intimidating than a single person by themselves when confronted. Groups are safer.

Now put it all in sealed plastic bins to keep Mice, Rats and Bugs out of it.

Nice got my stockpile. Learned the hard way.

Start growing potatoes and dry flaking them for indefinite storage. You could probably get a few hundred pounds from a small garden each year.

Great post!
It’s twice the cost, but I’ve just gone the dehydrated pack method so far. Can fit 2+ weeks worth of food in a shoebox and it’ll last 30 years.

When prepping, what world view or scenario exactly (or generally) do you imagine you’re preparing for?
I get the general collapse theory, but I’ve never been able to accept that there’ll be a collapse of authority.
Just society and all the horrors the ruling power allows and afflicts on us.

When looking at any and every scenario on a time scale, no matter how off grid and 100 miles removed any homestead is, I think the gov will just come wipe you out with DARPA dogs before muh black urban hoards make it to you. So I still think the back woods off grid scenario is the best set up, but only to outlast the 1st and 2nd wave of real unrest. And it can only be taken serious with the express understanding that being mobile eventually won’t be a choice if you want to live.

Even then this all has to be at least 90% chance of a larp, to think the government won’t just roll out a gulag archipelago before any SHTF even takes root.

I bought a freeze dryer in order to make things easier on my preps.

I figure there's two kinds of scenarios I need to prepare for and all the rest will be covered automatically: long term unemployment and complete collapse (including nuclear events).

There's only so much prepping anyone can do for a nuclear event unless they're rich as fuck. But in the course of planning however you can, you also cover complete collapse and grid-down scenarios. You also cover bug out and family emergencies. Basically, everything is covered by those two prep approaches.

There are very few collapse scenarios which will not require a bug out to a remote location. If I have to bug out, my target location is about 3.5 hours away by car and is an deep mountain area I know extremely well. I also know a decent amount of roads and towns along the way so I don't have to rely on main roads. I'll be covering my transportation methods and those plans in a later post.

Augason farms dehydrated 30 year #10 cans. Mylar bags + food grade buckets with air tight lids + oxygen absorbent = dried bulk storage 30 year.

Ammo, two of each firearm and tools to maintain.

Edit: angle brackets break the site.

Nada brother. Looks like you'll be starving when the SHTF:-)

lol...

There's something in the post that's breaking the site. I tried putting it in the comment but it breaks it too.

don't laugh but my prepping efforts to date have consisted of two 10 litre plastic containers of mineral water and someone on this site said the plastic would poison the water. What do you say? I note you said not to store water in milk containers but obviously these aren't that.

[ - ] totes_magotes [op] 3 points 3.7 yearsOct 20, 2021 08:06:52 ago (+3/-0)

You might not be able to see it in the first picture but there's a store of bottled water. I'm currently in the middle of trying to rig up some gutters on an outbuilding because I have a 300 gallon water tank ready to act as a backup.

Plastic does indeed leech into water over a long period of time. There's two ways to deal with that:

1. Freeze it. Plastic won't leach into ice and you can cut the bottle open and rinse shit off.
2. Keep it completely dark (like here). Plastic photodegrades. That is to say that light is what breaks it down. No light, no degrade. Or at least a LOT slower.

I have plans to get canned water (yes, you can do that) for one of my vehicles because it's more durable than bottled or bagged water.

In any case, you're highly unlikely to get a storage container for water that isn't plastic. If you do, it's hella expensive.

There is, however, a lot to know about plastic because there's like... what... 10 different kinds? Only a few of them are food/water safe. You don't store water in milk jugs because that plastic is porous which means bacteria from the milk will grow in the plastic and move into the water.
