This festival— Yulin Dog Meat and Lychee festival— coincides with the solstice. Some torture the dogs first before slaughter because of a belief that adrenaline makes the meat more tasty.
Dog meat consumption is more common in southern China than the north, as well as many countries in southeast asia like Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Philippines, etc. Tens of millions of dogs are eaten in this region yearly.
Koreans seem to do it alot and have some sort of “dog wine” they drink. Polynesians and native americans all consumed alot of dog meat historically. SS Africans eat it (surprise), where its considered a delicacy or medicinal in some places.
TIL, the Irish mythic hero Cú Chulainn made two vows, one of which was to avoid dog meat and the other was to never refuse hospitality. When he is offered a dinner of dog’s meat, he breaks one of his vows, losing his invulnerability, and is subsequently killed in battle the next day.
