Self-discipline is following the rules and orders, not because of fear of punishment (hell, a dog can do that) but because you have chosen to.

Most people don't understand what they are seeing. He just risked getting shit-canned from that position in that unit. A unit that is very difficult to join in the first place, and a position that is very difficult to achieve. It would be like a Tomb Guard at the Tomb of the Unkowns at Arlington deciding to break protocol.

Initiative is doing the right thing in the absence of, and sometimes even in contravention of, orders, when in the best estimation of the Soldier, such action is proper, necessary, and correct.

Judgement is knowing the difference, and when to risk discipline by bending the rules just a bit, as long as he is prepared to articulate and justify his actions as thoughtful, measured and wholly appropriate. An action which may at first glance may seem to violate the black-and-white of the regulation or order, as written, but is NOT an offense against "good order and discipline" is no offense at all.

He made another human being's family's whole day unforgettable. Worth it. As long as his actions reflect well and bring great credit upon himself, his unit, England, and The King, he'll be fine.
