Martin Guitars, when they decided to do a Jim Croce guitar, A.J. and I had talked to them and they said, 'You know, we want to do something really special in the guitar,' and they actually found mint dimes of the year that Jim had died – 1973 – it was one of those happenstances that occur. And in the neck of the guitar, I think it's on the third fret but I'm not quite sure, there is a minted dime that had never been circulated, in the head of 73 of the Jim Croce guitars. So this "Operator" was a really important song for a lot of people, including Martin Guitar. They wanted to really memorialize it.

Excerpt from an interview with Ingrid Croce talking about Jim, this song, and his career.

I know this song is supposed to be about the music industry, but damn, it sure does fit the social narrative in today's world, doesn't it?

The Doobie Brothers version of the song was released in 1972. The original version by Arthur Reid Reynolds was in 1966 with a cover by The Byrds in 1969.

It's early, I need another cup of coffee.

Erroneously reported at the time, as it was current news, to be about Patty Hearst when it is actually based on a spoiled heir to a fast-food chain who was an ex-boyfriend of Daryl Hall's girlfriend, Sara Allen. "But you can't write, 'You're a rich boy' in a song, so I changed it to a girl," Hall told Rolling Stone.

Hall elaborated on the song in an interview with American Songwriter:

"Rich Girl" was written about an old boyfriend of Sara [Allen]'s from college that she was still friends with at the time. His name is Victor Walker. He came to our apartment, and he was acting sort of strange. His father was quite rich. I think he was involved with some kind of a fast-food chain. I said, "This guy is out of his mind, but he doesn't have to worry about it because his father's gonna bail him out of any problems he gets in." So I sat down and wrote that chorus. [Sings] "He can rely on the old man's money/he can rely on the old man's money/he's a rich guy." I thought that didn't sound right, so I changed it to "Rich Girl". He knows the song was written about him.

Well the music is your special friend
Dance on fire as it intends
Music is your only friend
Until the end

As noted a keyboardist as Manzarek was, Robbie Krieger and John Densmore were equally as impressive in their own rights.

Written by Ted Nugent and rhythm guitarist/singer Steve Farmer. This was on the first Dukes album to feature all original songs, all of which were written by Ted Nugent and Steve Farmer. The album was in part a commercial attempt to reach the counter-cultural market by producing somewhat of a concept album. Originally, the record's A and B sides were to be stylistically contrast to each other, and written separately by Nugent and Farmer, respectively. The final project, however, includes most of the lyrics on the first half to be written by Farmer, while the second half features Nugent's only writing contribution to be the music for this song and "Conclusion", which uses the same music. While Nugent's songs are more geared in the direction of hard rock that would pioneer into what is now considered an early precursor to heavy metal music, Farmer's work has much more of a psychedelic, almost trendy by design, feel that tends to make satire out of the music scene at the time rather than embrace it, even going as far as to play out like a continual concept album. Despite the musical differences, the two sides are both experimental in their own right, as they were still in the process of developing their sound that Nugent would ultimately continue to reinvent until the end of the band's career.

Fun fact: The drummer was Mickey Jones, who played with Trini Lopez and was Bob Dylan's tour drummer after Levon Helm dropped out. He was also the mechanic/sheriff in National Lampoons Vacation.

P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, who at the time were just starting the band The Grass Roots, wrote this song. Secret Agent was a US adaptation of a hit show in England called Dangerman, and CBS needed a 15-second theme to replace the British version. Sloan wrote the guitar lick and the first few lines of the song, with Barri contributing to the chorus. This fragment, originally called "High Wire", was recorded as a demo by Sloan and Barri, submitted to CBS, and, to Sloan's surprise, picked as the show theme, which led to Sloan and Barri writing a full-length version of the song. The original demo of the song used the "Danger Man" title, as shown by the surviving demo of the song, which Sloan sang. When the show's title was changed, the lyrics were also changed. Ultimately, "High Wire" was also retained by CBS, as it played over the episode credits following the "Secret Agent" titles.

In 1965, surf rock band The Challengers recorded a version for their album The Man From U.N.C.L.E. that features vocal harmonies, horns, and vibraphone. This would be the first commercial release of the song, though it was never released as a single and consequently didn't garner much attention.
