The way I see it, if the target gets close enough to engage close quarters, and my optic fails, sidearm.
If I have enough time to remove a broken optic, then I have enough time to move around the rear sight. And what makes you think that it won't maintain zero? I've swapped around optics plenty, mount it in the same 1913 slot and rock and roll.
Heavy gun simply means get stronger. Once upon a time I was a SAW gunner. 10 lbs ain't shit.
And light... hmmmmm.... Maybe. What's an inexpensive but still quality option? I was about to say that I wouldn't be entering and cleaning buildings with a long gun, but I definitely did do that in Iraq with an M16A4.
I like the stock, kind of counterweight for the front, it's heavy, but well balanced. I have a piston rifle that's lighter, but front heavy, so the front end wants to drift down.
That's just a for stowage. It won't fit under the rear aperture. If I ever get into a situation where I need to take off LPVO to switch to BUIS, then I'll have enough time to move the BUIS.
I carried an M16A4 for years and in combat. I liked it better than the M4. I put this together as a kind of modernized M16A4, I guess you would call it an M16A5.
