The Sun is local, it is much much closer to the flat plane and much smaller than you're imagining if you think it would light up the whole world. As a thought experiment, imagine you and another person are in a dark, pitch black airplane hangar. The other person is holding a lit lightbulb and starts walking away from you. The light from the lightbulb would recede. You'd be left in darkness, watching the light get smaller and smaller and eventually you would be unable to see it. These visual effects are due to the law of perspective and the inverse square law. Probably the second most popular claim made is that the Sun doesn't change sizes throughout the day. This point is a little more to unravel. Sometimes it observably does change size and sometimes it really doesn't. This is due to 3 things. The Sun a very large object in comparison to you. The Sun is very high up compared to you. And lastly, atmospheric conditions (weather, humidity). Since the Sun is very large in comparison to the range of your vision and so high up already, it looks like it just suddenly disappears when it reaches the range of your vision.

He reasoned that this was only possible if the plane were actually a large ball then reverse engineered the math to make it work. Turns out the math works the same for both a flat plane with a local sun and a ball Earth with a distant Sun.

A simple way to disprove this yourself is simple observation. You can often see the Sun and the Moon in the sky at the same time. Note their locations and the Moons phase. Ask yourself how the ball models shadows theory could possibly work with the Sun, Moon and Earths current locations and the Moons phase. How is the Earth projecting its shadow on the Moon if the Sun and the Moon are both in the sky at the same time? Does the location of the shadow on the Moon make any sense? I cannot make a claim as to what causes the eclipses, but its easy enough to observe for yourself that the positions are not correct for eclipses to be shadows. In addition, ball believers also claim that their model accurately predicts and calculates when eclipses will happen. I've never seen them provide the calculations. Eclipses have been accurately predicted for thousands of years without needing or using the ball model.
