(As someone who was able to take latin in a country town high school in the mountains of WV in the late 70's. You could also take Greek. Our schools French, Spanish, German teachers were all native speakers.)

I took Latin in high school.

Note that the above is related; knowing one of the major precursor languages to English helps improve writing and vocabulary, and those who take optional language courses like these were more likely to go to secondary school.

Meanwhile nowadays colleges are happy to admit people for interpretive dance degrees financed by government-insured loans and these people need to be able to "write gud" to produce plausibly good enough work to continue long enough to get through all four years.
