1975 Mercedes 280

My first car. Horrible gas mileage and power. Steel body didn't help.

However it felt like you were driving in your favorite chair. Back seats were bench and felt like a couch at your grandmas house.

Had to sell it when the transmission went and it would cost nearly $5k to fix cause parts weren't available.

Gas? Bummer. The "diesel" equivalent was a fucking runner,those cars just wouldn't give up.

Yup. I wasn't complaining at the time. Gas was cheap and I was 18. Restored the paint and chrome as best as I could. Mine was an ivory color with the hubs to match. Brown leather interior.

I loved it. Got looks all the time. Driving a 75' when everyone else had late 90s or early 2000s. Wouldn't mind having it today as a local road only vehicle. 180hp I think out of the factory with the steel body and age? Not great on larger roads today.

My transmission started slipping bad and I got an oil leak. Made it look like Uncle Bucks car. Had rebuilt the engine dor $3k at one point. My fault likely. Drove everything either a dense right foot.

1980 300 CD with cat for scale.

It has a manual gearbox from a 280D. The clutch hydraulics are being a faggot right now.

Also I loved fucking hood ornaments I want em back. Though I know ya can see the hood most times in new cars and I don't like it.

Charlie is a very fat boi.

Paint is for sure on the to-do list, but leaving that for last. I wanna swap out the transmission for a 5 speed stick; gotta redo the clutch master / slave cylinders [again], and above all, I need a new turbo! And maybe lower the gear ratio in the diff... maybe.

Amazingly, it drives fine with the dead turbo it has presently - therefore it will be an insane hotrod with that fixed! THEN it is time for bodywork and paint. The previous owner gave me a huge bundle of stainless trim pieces; I think its all there, but it is all a little banged up, too.

Mercedes before the late 90's really were tanks, nigh indestructible. The diesels would refuse to die.

Then "marketers" and "economists" took over from the engineers and MB, like all other car companies, turned to shit. Their cars nowadays are plasticy made-in-China pieces of shit that are designed to break early and often and require extremely specialised tools to repair.

"Just open the hood and fix it yourself, like I used to when I had my 3 cars as a teen", says the boomer.

Had a dude rear end this car in a gas station. Slight bump his front headlight was done.

Ya mercs today are absolute trash.

Couple of my requirements when i got another car after an accident.

Least a 4 cylinder.

Straight drive.

No extra bullshit like screens or Bluetooth. No fuck off stereo.

Low amount of driving assistance.

The engine bay must be accessible for basic repair. You should be able to do most things with basic tools.

FWD now cause I've had enough RWD in snow and rain.

Mine (for example) was the '66 Plymouth Barracuda, got damn, I thought that was the coolest car ever.
