Greatest number of ship owners in the 16th and 17th cent. I think its probably safe to say sephardics were also part of that number. Later on, many gentiles got in on the act. The majority of the slave consumers were not jews but gentile “gentleman farmers” who owned plantations and of course the white european aristocracy owned annuities based on the plantation economy.
Jews are merchants so they tend to be buying and selling slaves wherever theres a market. But slavery has been practiced for millenia and before there were any jews in europe, whites were buying and selling each other.
