You know the first time I ever learned that I was at Walmart and they were like hey can you unload a truck and I said sure. I unload the truck they said wow you just did that faster than anyone has ever done it. I thought “great now I’m gonna have to fucking do it all the time.” I was right. Every 2 or so days. They’re like “you’re strong”yea bullshit dude at the time I hadn’t been to a gym in 6 years. And if I slowed down they started complaining. How in charge are you, really? Could you fire everyone currently working there and replace them? You don't own the company, so at some pojnt you answer to someone. It's just a question of how involved they want to be.
If the answer to the second question above is "yes", well, then you're very much in charge. Try to do things the way the last guy did, until you start to feel like you understand why he did things that way. If the answer is "no", though, then all you need to do is be cool and try to anticipate what the boss man wants and get those balls rolling before he asks so you seem like a rockstar and can get shit done in no time flat (but, also, don't over-commit and set a ball rolling you can't stop before he asks for it.)
The details are going to require your constant attention and thoughts both on and off the clock, but the flowchart really only has those two branches from the root on it and every other option after that is just a matter of your best judgement.
I feel like I should be old. I’m too young for this. I’m literally the youngest least experienced guy and they put me in charge. My hair should be grey man.
I just built out an org chart today. Getting promoted and will have 8 direct reports. My salary is doubling. Yeah, lots more headaches but I have already been doing the same job for a while. In a lot of ways, it will be easier.
