Well, folks, it's Friday. You should probably know what that means. We've been doing this for years and years and years. It's time for the Friday Night Guitar Thread. Come share some music you made. We don't bite!

submitted by TheRealBuddha to Guitar 4 daysApr 25, 2025 19:59:34 ago (+26/-1)     (Guitar)

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should upgoat go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @Sleazy or myself).

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

The same three boomers with the same guitar 101 attempts.

Over, and over, and over, and over...

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 07:56:11 ago (+0/-0)

what would you like to hear?

me and my buddy just get together to play some songs and have fun

but I like a challenge

what would impress you?

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 3 daysApr 26, 2025 08:39:21 ago (+1/-0)

Sleazy, remember me mentioning the girl who sent me 10 of the gayest, most horrible bands to listen to? One of those was As I Lay Dying.

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 17:07:01 ago (+0/-0)

I am not familiar with that band

[ - ] big_fat_dangus 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 08:35:30 ago (+0/-0)

Play anything by As I Lay Dying.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 08:36:39 ago (+0/-0)

Oh, I thought you were for real, lol.

[ - ] big_fat_dangus 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 08:39:47 ago (+0/-0)

Pussy.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 08:42:16 ago (+0/-0)

Says the homo who listens to as I lay dying LOL! If you're not fucking around, and really find that impressive- that's sad man.

[ - ] big_fat_dangus 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 09:09:21 ago (+0/-0)

Can't even play AISD, basic bitch by metal standards. Sad.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 16:19:33 ago (+0/-0)

Metal standards are bottom of the barrel as is, I wouldn't say that band is even basic bitch level.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 08:36:11 ago (+0/-0)

Regale us with your brilliance!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 20:45:21 ago (+0/-0)

You might as well join us. It's not like we're going to stop, even though our participation levels are so much lower.

Back on old Voat, we'd have 400 to 500 comments in a semi-busy thread. We'd see maybe 20 to 30 tracks shared in a good thread.

Ah well...

We keep it going. You should join us.

Also, you should understand guitar more before making claims about the complexity. I have personally shared pieces where I'll give you $500 if you can match them. Unless you actually understand the instrument, you're not gonna be able to say what is difficult and what isn't.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:19:53 ago (+3/-0)

LOL That's not you.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:03:03 ago (+1/-0)

No shit, now that's in my history. I watched a video of a man burning alive yesterday that was less offensive.

[ - ] Drstrangestgov 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:39:10 ago (+2/-0)

Ah, uncle ted. Why didn't you tell us about the plot?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:20:05 ago (+2/-0)

It's not my job to tell y'all anything.

I will say that I'm amused as all fuck with the various posts to this site as of late.

[ - ] Drstrangestgov 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:27:27 ago (+2/-0)

Life is but a stage, I hear.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:31:03 ago (+2/-0)

COF (we still miss him) used to say that quite regularly.

As an aside, it seemed strange to miss a person I'd only known online. But, here we are.

[ - ] Drstrangestgov 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:32:05 ago (+2/-0)

We've been around for a while, haven't we?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 20:48:06 ago (+0/-0)

Years and years...

The guitar thread goes all the way back to 2017. I joined Voat in 2014 or early 2015. I was one of the very first users. I had never had a Reddit account, which made me an outlier by itself. I just happened to hear about the site from either HN or Slashdot. I followed a link and the signup was broken. I refreshed every few days until it was working and open...

The rest is just the history we already know.

[ - ] Drstrangestgov 1 point 3 daysApr 26, 2025 22:44:45 ago (+1/-0)

Lol. Not very interesting history.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 2 daysApr 27, 2025 17:03:03 ago (+0/-0)

We think it's interesting. Sadly, our archivist died. We have a history of the threads going back to 2017.

Over the years, we've had hundreds of people participate.

Sadly, our participation rates have dropped in recent years - but that's okay. We're still having fun and we're still learning new things. We get to share with each other and learn from each other. We've developed true friendships, which is a rare thing to have happen on sites like this.

So, yeah, we think we have an interesting history. You should join us. It doesn't take much. Just grab your cell phone, download an app if you don't have one already, and sing us a song. We don't even care if you suck at singing, we're just happy you decided to share.

We've had great vocalists and shitty vocalists. We've had great guitar players and shitty guitar players. It's all good.

Hmm...

If you're one of those Christian people:

Psalm 98:4: "Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!"

See? Even the Christian deity wants you to make joyful noises. It doesn't say 'skillful noises', just 'joyful'.

I should use that as a thread title.

[ - ] Drstrangestgov 1 point 2 daysApr 27, 2025 17:14:35 ago (+1/-0)

I suspect we may have an incompatible culture.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 1 dayApr 28, 2025 22:27:45 ago (+0/-0)

That's fine. We've had cultures of all types. We tend to keep politics and religion out of the threads.

We're really just about the music. I could give two shits about your viewpoints on things. They don't matter to me even in the slightest.

I speak from a point of privilege, I suppose. But, at the end of the day, there's literally fuck-all anyone here can do that will impact my lifestyle in a negative manner. There is, quite literally, fuck all that you can do that's going to matter to my life.

And that's pretty awesome.

Now, you should sign us a song and share it with us next Friday.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:50:12 ago (+2/-0)

Here is another song Chris and I played this week, this one is a cover of Blaze Foley

Girl Scout Cookies

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:20:32 ago (+2/-0)

I have to have heard that before. It's just too familiar.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:21:06 ago (+2/-0)

All the people that we play for around here really seem to enjoy that one

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:29:04 ago (+1/-0)

I swear I've heard it before. But, you know my memory...

I'm gonna head to bed soon. It has been 2.5 hours, so that's a good thing. I'm starting to get tired, though the wine probably isn't helping a whole lot.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:20:52 ago (+1/-0)

Loved it. But I've never heard a situation more in dire need of pedal steel.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:21:33 ago (+1/-0)

That would be a great addition to the studio!

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:34:03 ago (+1/-0)

I had a friend in Texas who would buy crazy instruments, get ok on it, then 6 months later never play it again. One of those was a BEAUTIFUL vintage Sho-Bud doubleneck. Most complicated instrument I've ever seen. Even the Mel Bay instruction book looked like trigonometry hieroglyphics.

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 23:07:45 ago (+0/-0)

I have never played a pedal steel but I hear it is hard

My list says I haven't posted this, but I feel like I have.

Perineum

If I did, here's another short Dregs ripoff. Notice none of my Dregs ripoffs are the crazy complicated shit:

Booze Control

And for strictly curiosities sake, this is totally skippable. Me annihilated, testing some multi effects thing. I couldn't find anything good enough to hold the camera up. So I play some of the craziest shit I've ever played on electric guitar, and most of it's off camera.

Outtake

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:22:07 ago (+2/-0)

This is upgoat, the replacement for Voat.

A tiny percentage of the people will know what parineum means - and those will only be the ones who looked it up first.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:59:19 ago (+2/-0)

What in the fuck. This is how oblivious I am. I've been here on the porch for hours, just looked up, and my neighbors directly across the street have a wrapped house. How could I not notice that?

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 4 daysApr 26, 2025 00:49:08 ago (+0/-0)

What is a wrapped house?

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 3 daysApr 26, 2025 08:34:46 ago (+1/-0)

Toilet papered.

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 3 daysApr 26, 2025 17:07:16 ago (+0/-0)

Hello and welcome to another Friday Night Guitar Thread! Like normal, we'll get you started.

So, I have an external disk with me and I was poking around on it. I found some stuff that you've almost certainly not heard - or not heard in a very long time. That means we're going to share some freshly updated music.

Unlike my normal posts, we'll get you going with a couple of tracks...

This one is BDE but without me...

AC_DC - It's A Long Way To The Top (full band w_o david)

And this is a fun one. If you're unfamiliar with the song, and haven't heard it in years, be patient. Listen to the whole thing and you'll know why I covered it all those years ago.

Beat It (Micheal Jackson)

There you have it.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:08:04 ago (+3/-0)

Hell yeah, I've never gotten to play an AC/DC song, that sounded fun. Beat It does too.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:25:04 ago (+3/-0)

AC/DC are fun to cover, as a general rule. They're not too complicated but they still made great songs.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:20:18 ago (+3/-0)

Cool. Hell yeah! I liked em both.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:26:16 ago (+3/-0)

They've not been shared in a long time. I figured it was a good time to share them.

The AC/DC song isn't with me but was BDE on their own.

If you're curious, they're still doing just fine and still making a living from their musicianship.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:53:45 ago (+3/-0)

I was wondering who was singing. They sound great!

I figured they would be doing great, and you still have an open invitation to play with them when ever you want!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:02:25 ago (+3/-0)

Yeah, that wasn't me singing.

Hmmm...

https://share.fngt.gq/music/BDE/BDE%20-%20Bat%20out%20of%20Hell%20%2807.04.21%29.mp3

That's me singing.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:17:36 ago (+2/-0)

Well hell fucking yeah! That was awesome!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:30:26 ago (+2/-0)

I haven't shared that one lately, even though it has been uploaded for a long time.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:47:28 ago (+2/-0)

Whoa this RULES.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:27:23 ago (+2/-0)

Yeah, I spent a long time working as a performing musician. That's from my retirement years, a stage in my life where I was helping the next generation of musicians make their living from their musicianship.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:16:03 ago (+2/-0)

That was tight as fuck all the way through. I'd freak out if I saw that in a bar or something.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:05:28 ago (+3/-0)

Hello everybody. My buddy Chris came over to jame earlier this week and we finished this song idea we had the last time he was here a couple weeks back.

Beer Tree

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:20:17 ago (+3/-0)

Listening now.

Hmm... A beer tree could be handy.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:51:02 ago (+3/-0)

We love the beer tree

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:01:26 ago (+3/-0)

I would like a beer tree. I'd even be careful to not harvest it too often.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:19:16 ago (+2/-0)

make sure to water it good so the bottles come down full

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:30:47 ago (+2/-0)

Can I pee on the tree to water it?

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:37:10 ago (+2/-0)

That's what we were thinking, that has to be implied, doesn't it?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:25:52 ago (+2/-0)

I think I'd rather a wine tree - except grapes already grow on vines.

How about a rum tree?

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 4 daysApr 26, 2025 02:37:32 ago (+1/-0)

Or a tequila tree

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 3 daysApr 26, 2025 20:50:03 ago (+1/-0)

You can do a lot with tequila, though I think rum is used in more drinks. You can generally swap one for the other in a mixed drink. The taste will be a bit different but it's still going to result in an acceptable drink. They do tend to emphasise the sour tastes in tequila drinks.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:45:52 ago (+1/-0)

My first thought.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:52:35 ago (+1/-0)

That sounds like confirmation to me!!!

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:33:18 ago (+2/-0)

Incredible. Also, I think I've played that place in the picture 100s of times.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:52:37 ago (+2/-0)

the place in the picture is the studio in my house here

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:08:38 ago (+2/-0)

It looks exactly like this place i played at where the drummer kept throwing sticks and they'd stick in the ceiling. By the 3rd set when everyone was a drunken mess, he threw his 2nd to last one up mid song and had to Def Leppard it the rest.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:10:47 ago (+2/-0)

Cool!

[ - ] mahavishnunj 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:15:36 ago (+3/-0)

I said awhile back I only had that one heavy tune, but I forgot this one. It's another ICS song, so I ran out of time and didn't put bass on it. Pretend it's like And Justice For All. I was going for old Melvins on the heavy parts:

Oscillating Fan

And another old forgotten one with some cool chords:

Opposite Day

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:23:09 ago (+3/-0)

I'm listening to the Opposite Day one.

It has a vibe, or so I think that's what the cool kids call it these days. In my own lingo, I can dig it.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:41:49 ago (+1/-0)

I love that tone on the oscillating fan

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:45:04 ago (+1/-0)

I swear a think it was the first Line 6 pod. I used that when I couldn't use the amp. I'm sure it was also the "A-1" setting, because that's what you get when you turn it on.

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 23:36:27 ago (+0/-0)

I never used a line 6 but I heard people say their amps were no good

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 3 daysApr 26, 2025 08:31:46 ago (+1/-0)

I don't get into multi effects or solid state bullshit, but that pod was given to me and actually turned out useful. I'd never use it on a real recording or gig though.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:22:27 ago (+3/-0)

That last link won't work.

Opposite Day

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:24:18 ago (+3/-0)

Yeah, I replied to the wrong post. LOL

[ - ] mahavishnunj 4 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:39:08 ago (+4/-0)

This is the longest thing I'll ever post, but there's 1000 changes in it. And the only time I recall doing a Steve Morse sounding lick in a solo, I wish I did more of that. If y'all haven't seen that pic before, that's the tranny from our trailer park when I first started working there.

Tilton

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 20:40:47 ago (+3/-0)

That's pretty jazz-y.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 4 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:05:17 ago (+4/-0)

The basic tracks for that were recorded on a 4 track, with my drummer, in a sweltering storage unit with no A/C. Middle of summer in Austin, those were the days.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:29:57 ago (+1/-0)

That sounds like a hot and horrible experience. Then again, Texas is pretty horrible as it stands.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:40:53 ago (+1/-0)

I left in 2007 when it was just becoming gay. I've only got 2 friends left there, everyone retreated.

[ - ] kammmmak 2 points 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:39:40 ago (+2/-0)

The drummer really made it make good easy sense. So much good goin on dude great crazy track loved the free change ups. I've had mahuvishnu orchestra birds of fire on all day on vinyl last 2 days actually.
Kinda Zappaish some parts imo

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:42:58 ago (+1/-0)

Wow, thanks. He hated me for all the odd time shit for awhile, but then he got way into it. Which records were you doing today?

[ - ] kammmmak 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:50:53 ago (+1/-0)

Man yeah he took serious command it really stands out. Kinda hard explaining but he ends up leading the charge like best way say it especially the first and last parts. But of course tge piano and guitar were quite good nice freestyle but not anything goes boring jazz. More directional and patterned. Real good and for me saying that is something coz i don't like pure jazz. Progressive is what i heard here. Can't believe so little views.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 22:54:50 ago (+1/-0)

Hell yeah. My only tattoo:

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:18:28 ago (+1/-0)

I agree with the Buddha

that is pretty jazzy!

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 4 daysApr 25, 2025 21:42:39 ago (+1/-0)

The only thing I remember about the actual song, is the beginning and end were VERY inspired by Bela Fleck. So thank you, I accomplished jazzy!
