Here's a guitar story that came up in conversation earlier. I went to see Mike Keneally in 2000 and had this genius plan. I was in with this obscure band I knew he was getting into, so I had a bootleg cassette of them that was impossible to find back then. But I snuck one of MY songs onto the end of it. So I gayly thought that
1) Mike Keneally was going to care about a tape given to him by some random asshole, and
2) if he did, he was going to make it to the end, hear my 4 track bullshit, be AMAZED, and I was going to be in his band.

That song was my crowning achievement at the time, and I apparently gave him my only copy. I've never run across it since.

I'm still waiting(yes I put my phone number and everything in there). That was my first SXSW experience and we learned quickly how shitty it is. He was playing in this sports bar. We did not pay the million dollars for wrist bands, so while he was playing we were still waiting outside while all these frat douches and their dates were getting in. Anyway, one of many bad sxsw stories.

I found some curiosities as usual. It's very rare i listen to one and think, "damn, that's actually pretty good". This is one of those. I might resurrect this if I can ever play chords again:

He's totally underrated on guitar. When he's talked about, it's the voice and songs which are obviously great. But I find him one of the better rock guitarists of the era too.

She's right, it does typify SRV. From a player's perspective, it uses all of the styles that define him as an artist. The song's name is Tightrope, and it doesn't get played nearly enough. Even if you have never heard it before, you can tell it's SRV by the style of the music. Thus, it typifies him."

I can pretty much cover anything I hear, though it may take a bit to get the tone right.

I no longer find anything reasonably that I can't play.

No, if you just put your fingers in random places and thrash on the strings, I can not replicate that. Otherwise, assuming it's rational and using real chords and finger patterns, I can cover it.

I've been practicing diligently for many years.

Thanks. It was a fun one back in the day. I'm a pretty big fan of SRV, even ranking him quite a bit higher than many other guitarists.

Unfortunately, we'll never know how he'd have matured. Lots of guitar players mature with age and create some great music later in life. We'll never have that with SRV.
