Do you have a knife you use specifically for cutting bread? If so, how often do you wash it?

About once a week for mine.

I just rinse both sides under water for a second and dry it. That applies to almost all vegetables and fruits as well. Only after cutting meat do I truly wash a knife. And if someone does not rinse the knife after cutting bread, I would not care.

I've seen my mil do this. I go behind her and rewash everything I think she used.

Yes. Every time.

There's this thing, it's called a dishwasher and all you have to do is get up from the table and the dishes disappear.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 29, 2025 14:20:20 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, I have a dishwasher. Mine always makes this terrible sighing noise when it's working though. Not sure if I should try to fix it, or just swap it out for a new model.

Just push her down a flight of stairs and threaten to cut her hair off if she doesn't stop making that noise.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 2 points 1 monthMar 29, 2025 14:52:22 ago (+2/-0)

So that's why the stairs are next to the kitchen...

Did you try slapping it on the rear end?

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 3 points 1 monthMar 29, 2025 15:31:57 ago (+3/-0)

New models are way way more expensive now, from the install forward. And you have to hook them up to wifi to get the options. It's fucked.

My dishwasher is hooked up to the WiFi all damn day on her iPad.

Usually if you Google Brand Washer Noise that Sounds like Whatever, someone else has made a video about any common problem.

I don't think he bought his dishwasher in a store, but he's probably spent a lot more money on her than he would have if he'd bought one in a store.

Any woman that complains about washing dishes has never known a time when they couldn't.

[ - ] Whatthefuck 3 points 1 monthMar 29, 2025 16:52:41 ago (+3/-0)

I definitely do not wash the bread knife after every use. Seems like a complete waste of time and energy. I leave the sour dough I make out on the counter, why should the knife be any different?

I think most people today just do all these things compulsively with no real understanding of "why". On the other hand, I'd prefer someone who compulsively cleans over someone who leaves things dirty with a similar lack of understanding.

I leave fruit out. I pick vegetables from my garden and leave them out. I leave my unwashed chicken eggs out. I leave my sourdough out. My starter has never seen a fridge. I make proper hard cheese I can leave out, too. A lot of food simply doesn't need refrigeration, and some tools don't need washing every use.

As a kid, I had an argument with my sister that the knife was dirty after bread cutting and had to be washed after every use. I've since come around, my bread knife gets washed if it gets dirty by anything but bread.

[ - ] Hobama 0 points 1 monthApr 1, 2025 05:05:58 ago (+0/-0)

You just leave the starter out? How often do you have to feed it?

[ - ] Whatthefuck 0 points 1 monthApr 1, 2025 09:13:56 ago (+0/-0)

6 to 8 hours before I want to make bread. You can let it go totally dormant in the jar for a week, and just dump off the worst of the hooch that will form on top, feed it, and let it rise again. To get 'perfect' rise you might want to cycle it once or twice to rejuvenate it if it's been a long time, but otherwise it's just going to take a little longer to rise up due to the high alcohol content retarding the growth a little. It's damned hard to kill once it's well established. My starter is yeeeears old at this point and seems immune to any abuse I can throw at it.

I don't eat bread. My woman occasionally buys a loaf of sliced sourdough from the local small town bakery.

[ - ] registered_bot 2 points 1 monthMar 29, 2025 17:24:55 ago (+3/-1)

Who the fuck is still filling their gullet with bread. If it's home made with good flour you get a pass. Anything on a store shelf is literally poison you idiots.

[ - ] Sector2 0 points 1 monthMar 29, 2025 17:50:33 ago (+0/-0)

True if one obtains bread from a conventional grocery store, but who does that?

[ - ] UncleDoug 1 point 1 monthMar 30, 2025 00:09:03 ago (+1/-0)

Yes I have a bread knife, never washed it.

[ - ] Gowithit 1 point 1 monthMar 29, 2025 18:17:05 ago (+1/-0)

Every...time.

Is this not a thing?

Blocked set of Damascus worth about $4k.
All blades used are clean and dry after every use.
Steak knives are kept clean and oiled.
Respect your tools!

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 29, 2025 17:26:12 ago (+1/-0)

Blocked set of stainless Cold Steel kitchen knives, cost about $150. Over a decade old, still as good as new and cut great. Dishwasher safe too ;)

[ - ] GrayDragon 0 points 1 monthMar 29, 2025 17:14:34 ago (+0/-0)

You oil your steak knives and leave it on them?!? With what kind of oil?

[ - ] 2plus2equals5 1 point 1 monthMar 29, 2025 18:15:44 ago (+1/-0)

Olive oil for for all wood cutting boards, knife handles, etc. Leave on until it soaks in.
Semi-fine sandpaper and wash off with water if still rough.

I'm using cast iron and stainless about 95% of the time. (Non-stick is toxic at high heat.)

Butter, lard, bacon grease, peanut or coconut oil. (Canola is industrial lube. Corn and soy is also poison.)

[ - ] UncleDoug 1 point 1 monthMar 30, 2025 00:10:05 ago (+1/-0)

Olive oil goes rancid, this is a terrible practice if left to oxidise.

[ - ] texasblood 1 point 1 monthMar 29, 2025 20:26:03 ago (+1/-0)

Any oil will work, but food grade is choice.
I like coconut oil on high end steels and cast iron.
Anything to keep moisture(humidity) off the steel

I don't have a dedicated bread knife but like a normal person, I always wash any utensil after using it. Even if the utensil doesn't "pick up" any food particles, like slicing bread.

[ - ] Sector2 1 point 1 monthMar 29, 2025 17:06:18 ago (+1/-0)

What do you do with the leftover bread after slicing it? It's just as contaminated by bread as the knife.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 29, 2025 17:29:30 ago (+1/-0)

Oh noes! I got microscopic bread residue on my bread cutting knife that I only ever use to cut bread. Better power up the auotclave boys, this bitch is unclean.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 0 points 1 monthMar 29, 2025 16:47:08 ago (+0/-0)

Ok normie.

[ - ] texasblood 0 points 1 monthMar 29, 2025 20:27:52 ago (+0/-0)

Bet you wash after a good shit too.
Most these knuckle draggers never heard of it.
Shit house straight to the buffet table

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 1 point 1 monthMar 29, 2025 14:30:38 ago (+1/-0)

Yes and idk depends on how many knives I'm washing. If I'm doing dishes I'll throw it in the sink and do it. If I'm just snacking on something then I'll put it back.

[ - ] KyleIsThisTall 0 points 1 monthMar 30, 2025 03:52:53 ago (+0/-0)

They are called bread knives

They are uniform height with a fully serrated edge

[ - ] paul_neri 0 points 1 monthMar 30, 2025 02:18:14 ago (+0/-0)

I will tell you if you tell me if you have a tool designed specifically for prising off jar lids.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 30, 2025 02:33:24 ago (+1/-0)

I don't need to use those, but the wife does. So, technically, I do "have" a couple of those round rubber things. What's your excuse?

[ - ] paul_neri 0 points 1 monthMar 30, 2025 02:38:37 ago (+0/-0)

A spoon. The round end under the lid to break the vacuum.

In my household of two the bread knife gets washed. Perhaps not as regularly as the "smeared knives".

[ - ] puremadness 0 points 1 monthMar 29, 2025 22:59:14 ago (+0/-0)

I have knives for butter and cheese.
If I use it for anything, I wash it.

[ - ] NaturalSelectionistWorker 0 points 1 monthMar 29, 2025 14:56:57 ago (+0/-0)

No, because I rarely eat bread, and when I do I get it pre-sliced. Usually it's noodles/pasta, rice, tortillas, or something I baked myself in single servings like homemade hot pockets.
