Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link.. If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Upgoat.net go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @TheRealBuddha or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

I'm keeping a list, according to it I haven't posted this. I actually like this one. It sounds like shit like all of mine, but it resembles a finished song.
Sally

And here's another idea that'll probably be on the record. I have several Ellington inspired things, but this is the most recent. I'm thinking fretless guitar with wahwah to simulate wahwah trumpet like early Duke would have.
Wornell

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 20:52:08 ago (+1/-0)

I was thinking Sally sounded like some old timey music but then I listened to Wornell, LoL

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 20:57:33 ago (+2/-0)

Yeah, the first half of Sally will put you to sleep in that first minute. I've done a 1930 sounding thing before, but nobody will ever hear it and it's attached to a weird prog song. I want wornell to sound authentic.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 21:19:37 ago (+3/-0)

I dont what the fuck this is, but I just made it up and recorded it. Enjoy

I wanna get it on

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 21:48:24 ago (+2/-0)

That would sound not at all out of place on an early Love(the band) record. You're stoned and in hippy mode aren't you.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 21:56:53 ago (+1/-0)

Usually LoL

[ - ] oppressed 2 points 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 00:14:54 ago (+2/-0)

nice song

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 00:20:46 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks. It seems to be an ear worm for me. I can't not hear it

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 22:14:59 ago (+2/-0)

Since you're stoned, this kinda sounds like hippy jam band shit. I've never done anything like this before or since, I'd like to do more- my friend sent me him just jamming solo on drums, I made a sort of song out of it. I was going for Eddie Hazel on the solo, I don't know how successful I was.

That was pretty laid back and trippy, thanks!

I'll quit after this, but here's my best recorded Duke Ellington impression. I don't know if the scratchy record effect is cheesy or not. This is the longest thing I'll ever post, but there's 1000 changes in it.

I was not complaining about the old timey music, not at all, just saying what it sounds like.

cool stuff man.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 21:36:51 ago (+2/-0)

Awesome, that's exactly what I was going for. Part of me instinctively wants to fuck things like that up and make it crazy, but the more "mature" me knows I should do it for real.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 20:24:53 ago (+3/-1)

The doctor tells me that I have a bit of a virus attacking me at the moment and that it will pass in time. Man, it is annoying. I lack energy and I'm sore. Weirdly, I also feel physically 'out of sorts'. I'm usually pretty healthy but these past few months are reminding me why I never really wanted to get that old.

Well, I'm officially old. I don't suppose that's something that will get better with time. At first blush, one would assume that our immune systems would improve with age, after all we've now fought off more things. But, for a variety of reasons, that's just not true.

So, I'd like to first than @Sleazy for opening the thread. As we tend to alternate, this would have been 'my turn' to open the thread. I feel like warmed over dog shit. Well, maybe slightly better than that...

I realize that he doesn't like The Doors but I'm actually quite a big fan of their music. I won't claim that Jim was an admirable person but I will point out that he wrote some really interesting shit before he died. (No, Jim is not alive and living his days out in Lebanon.)

BDE - Riders On The Storm (unknown - sometime in 2019)

It's a rare BDE track with vocals included. I didn't listen to it again, so it may also contain some crowd noise.

These are the only real notes I have for it:

"It's BDE live, that much I know. In the larger recording, it sounds like a sitting audience. It might be from the blues bar where we ended up sticking around to do a Sunday show. I'm not really sure."

Anyhow, that's enough energy spent for now. I may return but don't count on it. I'm pretty well exhausted and have spent a lot of energy over the past few days. Seriously, if you can avoid it, don't get old!

Rock on, Goats. Rock on!

[ - ] mahavishnunj 3 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 21:02:10 ago (+3/-0)

That was great. What kind of closet homo doesn't like the doors?

I don't know how old you are, but I'm in the final stages of the worst flu in history, and many people here are as well. It's not just your age.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 21:17:23 ago (+2/-0)

There are people who don't like them. There are people who don't like even the bands we like most.

That's okay. It's okay for them to not like The Doors. I mean, they're wrong and broken in the head, but it's okay. I can't imagine not liking them.

I don't like every song they made but I like a giant percentage of them, more so than many other bands. They also had some great albums - meaning collections of work instead of the dredge we get today which is just a couple of singles and filler material.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 21:41:36 ago (+2/-0)

I listened to all of them in a row recently. They get better as they go, but they're all amazing. Even the 2 post Jim ones are way better than you'd think.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 21:45:37 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, those are great albums. I like his spoken word work as well. I'm quite a fan.

I missed a chance to see the Doors in concert. I was just a young kid and chose other activities for the night.

As for my age, I was born in '57. So, I'm pretty old.

I also don't have the flu, or at least not like any flu I've had before. No, it's quite different - and I'm okay with that, given how long it has lingered.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 0 points 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 17:54:46 ago (+0/-0)

I don't like the doors LoL

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 23:30:41 ago (+2/-0)

That's some damn good music. Real good groove. Good feel to it.

You ever do Jessica by The Allman Brothers? You got all the instrument players to do it.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 09:56:34 ago (+1/-0)

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 20:29:37 ago (+2/-1)

That is such a great rendition of that song. Perfection

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 21:15:07 ago (+2/-0)

LOL You seem to have invited a downvote fairy.

And, thanks! I know you're not a huge fan of them, but I think they made some brilliant music.

If I die and the missus sends you a guitar, do you want one that's more prized due to the value (so you can sell it) or do you want one more prized for the quality of the guitar?

You probably wouldn't enjoy a classical guitar that's worth six figures very much. LOL

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 21:58:26 ago (+2/-0)

The quality

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 21:54:08 ago (+2/-0)

Actually, let's take that last bit to PM.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 11:52:47 ago (+2/-0)

So, I went and checked out some of the site...

Man... I don't think they understand tariffs well.

You, the person buying the product, pay the tariffs to your own government. They're essentially a tax on imported goods. The reason you might want to pay traffifs on imported goods is to encourage buying local goods. This is often done when the local goods are not as good as the foreign goods. It's a way to get people to buy products that can't compete in the market with imported goods.

You pay them when you buy something.

That money goes into your country's coffers. It doesn't go to the other country. We don't pay tarrrifs to other countries. That's just gibberish. Other countries have tariffs with American products. They do this to generate income for their government and to encourage businesses to enter their domestic market.

That's how tariffs work. I am baffled how people can think we've been 'paying tariffs to other countries' because that's not how it works.

Tariffsf are essentially taxes that YOU pay when YOU buy something from another country. (This is often paid by the businesses and then incorporated into the price and they pay the tariffs as they imported the goods.)

YOU pay tariffs. They go to YOUR government. It's essentially taxing imported goods. Our government doesn't pay (any meaningful) tariffs to other countries. If we have operations in their country and buy goods from a country that has taffics in said country, we'd pay them. But, that's a meaningless sum and would be for shit like a box of Bic pens imported from France to a US embassy except not even that's a realistic case as we'd have just procured the pens in the US and shipped them there as a matter of course.

Seriously, tariffs are nothing like what these folks think they are.

Also, sometimes (very rarely), there will be export tariffs. The company producing the goods pays those tariffs (and passes the costs along to their customers) and these tariffs are exceedingly rare. This is to encourage keeping goods within your nation instead of exporting them. If you have a valuable mineral asset, you might want to encourage the companies associated with that to keep the mineral interests within the country. So, you'd add export tariffs. That doesn't happen often, but it can.

Also, yes, they're a tax. They're a 'duty' which is a type of tax. Duties are taxes. That's why we have duty free zones and call them zero tax zones or tax free zones or similar names. Duties are one type of tax, like income tax, property tax, inheritance tax, etc...

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 12:40:40 ago (+3/-0)

Tariffs are to promote buying from your home nation workers and not another nation, if you do you pay extra

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 15:03:39 ago (+1/-0)

Yup.

Of course, we don't make much of anything in a vacuum these days. Very few things are completely made in America. So, it's just a way to fuck people over. They don't really have any other choices.

It can also help bring manufacturing to the country.

People are REALLY confused about tariffs on this site.

Hell, not even all of our food comes from America. You can't buy a car with all American bits and pieces. Intel has some fab work but those are not general CPUs and those need shit from overseas even then. You're not going to find RAM. You're not even going to find a major keyboard and mouse company. There are a couple of companies that put parts together in the US, but they're buying their parts from China.

So, just your computer is going up in cost.

You better hope your car gets fixed soon, 'cause that's going to go up in price a great deal. Car parts aren't made in the US anymore. They're assembled here and have some American bits and pieces but not even the steel (always) comes from America.

It's just a new tax. You might as well accept it. The shit you buy isn't going to get cheaper. It's just going to go up in price. You are the one that pays the tariffs.

Those jobs aren't coming back, by the way. No, the business is just gonna pass that cost down to you and you can fuck right off with your complaints about the costs. (That will be their viewpoint.)

A few smaller things might be to the US or back to the US. We manufacture all sorts of stuff, just not the stuff folks expect.

You're not going to find a computer's CPU being made anywhere in the US.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 15:16:31 ago (+2/-0)

As soon as it quits fucking raining and snowing we are going to fix my car. I have the parts I need, I think. But you know, other shit always breaks on machinery eventually.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 3 points 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 15:29:05 ago (+3/-0)

Yeah, there's always something you didn't think of - or something that breaks along the way, especially with older cars that haven't had ideal maintenance done on them and are up in the rust belt.

Oh!

If you go to like Temu or AliExpress, you can get one of the electrical coil heaters (they're essentially induction) that go over bolts and turn them red hot almost instantly. Let me find one for you, for example.

They're amazingly cheap these days.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805792622530.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.main.37.7a5a74faZoBIQD&algo

You can find less expensive and more expensive. I just picked one with what appears to be a solid external power supply as that's likely a good example.

Those loops are the magic parts. You just loop 'em over metal, like a nut or bolt, and it turns bright orange almost immediately. It's a good way to get penetrating oil into the fixture as well.

Oh, I'd also suggest getting a few cans of penetrating oil. I like PB Blaster but there are other brands that do the same thing. A week before you're going to work on the car, go out and spray the nuts you need to remove with penetrating oil. A few days before you're going to do the job, do that again. Repeat that every day until you do the job.

Penetrating oil works best when it has time to work. Repeated applications before working on the project will save you all sorts of swearing, tears, and fixing shit that broke.

Thread lock and anti-seize are also good things, especially if you plan on keeping the car. Thread lock keeps bolts and nuts where you put 'em. Anti-seize make it easier to remove bolts when you've gotta go back in there six months later because something else broke.

Hmm... Do you think you could get your car on a trailer, especially one with a winch?

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 0 points 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 17:40:18 ago (+0/-0)

I will show that to my son who is going to be helping me. we didn't have any problem getting any bolts out when we took the covers off to diagnose the issue. but he does a lot of work on rusty old cars that his friends have at times and that might come in very handy when you get a badly stuck bolt.

I do have some PB Blaster and penetrating oil. I should go spray some on there when it stops raining tuesday or wednesday or when ever it finally stops. Fucking windy as hell with non stop rain for days here with the temp in the 30's. It might turn to snow when the sun goes down.

I would assume i could get my car on a trailer with a winch. I mean I can get in and turn the key to power it on and shift it into neutral and push it around the driveway. We do that when we need to occasionally. So I would assume with a powerful enough winch it would be pulled up on to a trailer.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 15:21:24 ago (+2/-0)

I would think that tariffs might promote some people to open a factory for an item that can be made at a price that would undercut the tariff and profit

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 15:36:01 ago (+2/-0)

You would think so but that doesn't happen. The reality is that stuff is already sold at market costs. The few dollars saved by making it local doesn't add up to enough money to turn it into a viable business that makes a profit. The folks with the cheap labor can always undercut you or keep a price parity.

I'm not the one that's gonna be impacted by the tariffs. I'll be just fine, thanks. It's the poor and middle class that are going to get the surprise bills. The people in my tax bracket can hunker down and not buy anything for a while, or just eat the tariffs and consider it a price hike.

Shit, we don't even make much in the way of our own auto parts.

Also, every other country is going to respond in kind. Yeah... They're going to do the same thing to us as we did to them.

Anyhow, it'll all be for naught. The next jackass in office is just going to undo it all - and likely be elected on just that platform.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 15:58:28 ago (+2/-0)

One thing I learned about these tariffs is that you say other countries are going to respond in kind, but from what I have read, most of these countries already have tariffs and Trump is simply reciprocating, as you just said they would.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 17:26:35 ago (+1/-0)

They do have tariffs - with some countries and on some items. The US has enjoyed a privileged position in these regards since the post WWII economy.

One example of this is the 'Chicken Tax' - which is tariffs. European countries together to decided to place a tariff on imported eggs and chickens from the US. We responded by putting a tariff on small trucks.

This is why we don't get any of the cool small trucks until they're at least 25 years old. It's a tit for tat thing and can be pretty petty.

That doesn't actually change anything. We're still just going to have to pay more money for the things we need to buy. I'll be just fine, thanks. You don't buy much more than beer, so you should be all good. Your next $200 cell phone is going to be $250, so you'll manage that.

You're not in the market for a new car or anything like that. So, you're good there. The cost for used cars is going to climb very steeply because folks will keep their cars longer and want more for them. But, you should be fine - especially if you're quick.

China has all sorts of tariffs. They're kind of dicks like that. We're not making them change their ways. We're just going to pay more to import goods from China. It's not an equal footing or a zero sum game, especially in our current situation where we don't actually have the skills, people, infrastructure, capital, etc. to build those things in the US. That shit has been made overseas for decades now. We're now decades behind in that capacity.

China gives zero shits. They can happily make quality products in their own country and for export to even more markets that decide to avoid US products. They stole all that manufacturing know-how from us years ago. They don't even need to engage in corporate espionage anymore because they've developed an educated class of people who can do all of that in house.

They did the tariff thing at the right time.

It amuses me that people think that "China is going to pay tariffs" when that's not even remotely how it works. They're already paying tariffs, for starters. But, more importantly, they're not going to be paying our tariffs for us.

We're not fucked collectively. The people too poor are going to continue being too poor. There will be fewer people in the middle class. The wealthy class will continue to make money on things like their investments. Those people in the middle class are the ones who are going to be paying more (as a percentage of their income) for imported goods.

You'll be just fine. I'll be just fine. My family will be just fine.

If you're already impoverished, you'll continue to be so.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 2 monthsMar 29, 2025 17:30:26 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, I honestly have no idea what products are tariffed and at what cost, not at all. I just have a basic idea of the intent and i know that the constitution called for the government to be funded by them. I guess that's a way to tax consumption, of foreign goods, but like you say, some goods you have no choice but to buy foreign, so it is unavoidable.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 20:02:42 ago (+2/-1)

Here is my buddy Chris and I playing an old Grand Funk classic Rock and Roll Soul

[ - ] mahavishnunj 2 points 2 monthsMar 28, 2025 20:18:45 ago (+2/-0)

Hell yeah, I just did a dive on Grand Funk, including this record. I had only heard the hits, there's some real gold on those records.

"Faggoty Friends" autoplayed after this. How have you not posted THAT? It's brilliant.

Since you mentioned it...Faggoty Friends
