Hello, and welcome to the Friday Night Guitar Thread. In the Spring, a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love. And thoughts of love lead to writing a song to woo your desired. So come play us your song, or be woo'd by the songs of another. Just come join us and join in. All are welcome.

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link.. If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Upgoat.net go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @TheRealBuddha or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

I had mentioned last Friday that I was invited to join this band, and they came over to my house to jam on Saturday. It turns out that none of the people in the band had ever met any of the others before, we were all recruited by one of the guys and well, here we were, so lets jam.

Mr Brownstone

[ - ] dingbat 5 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 20:23:32 ago (+5/-0)

Oh hell yeah, Sleazy! This is one of my favorite GnR songs and you guys played it really well. Very tight! The singer did a great job sounding like Axl, too.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 4 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 20:29:33 ago (+4/-0)

Thank you. I thought we all sounded excellent together for none of us ever even having met before.

[ - ] dingbat 2 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 23:26:35 ago (+2/-0)

Well, if that just a first time meetup you all are gelling really well and hope you get to play with them more!

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 23:50:08 ago (+2/-0)

That was the first time we ever played that song or anything else together.

I can tell you, every one of us is very excited about the potential after doing that.

The guy that brought us together had asked that we all learn Mr Brownstone before we got together, and apparently we all did. We played it like three or four times after this and it was amazing every time. The whole experience of playing with four other dudes who hit every note was a fucking blast! That doesn't happen every day, I promise you.

We all tried to name songs that we knew but there was nothing that all of us knew how to play, so we decided to learn Rock and roll by Led Zepplin and It's so Easy from GnR and we will jam again on Sunday

So it will be fun to have three songs to play, I am looking forward to it.

And both the lead guitar guy and the singer guy like some of my original songs and want to play them. I am pretty sure that I am going to talk the drummer and the other guitar player to learn a couple of my songs for the next time, and I think that if that happens I will probably just drop dead right there on the spot, cause that would be the best day ever

Fuck yes! Congratulations man and well done. Sounds fantastic.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 00:38:08 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks man!

It was fun as fun could be!

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 09:14:01 ago (+1/-0)

That's better than sex, because it lasts longer. One of my first guitar nights I posted a jam where I go shred mode the whole time. Your situation happened with us and that bass player. The drummer and I had been through a ton of bass players and nobody was good enough. Very first thing we played was badass, we found our guy! It was hearts and unicorns love.... then we never saw or heard from him ever again, lol.

I'm jealous of getting your songs played. The closest I've come in 35 years is a sax player who learned my shit and could improvise, but we never found anyone else, and a violinist I worked with over a year. He finally could play the parts but couldn't improvise so he was ultimately useless.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 4 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 21:51:16 ago (+4/-0)

It's an evergreen. One of the few songs that will never get old.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 4 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 22:59:42 ago (+4/-0)

I have to agree, pretty good. Also, Axel, one of the best rock vocalists ever. One of my favorites for sure. Saw them in 1987 when they were playing clubs.

[ - ] dingbat 3 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 23:20:27 ago (+3/-0)

Hey, I was already jealous of your Judas Priest and Megadeth shows, now you tell me this??? That must’ve been a cool moment in time, damn. They were so good with Steven Adler, too! His drumming made the band sound really good.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1 monthMar 22, 2025 01:36:13 ago (+2/-0)

I seen Judas Priest and Megadeth and Van Halen and Rush and WASP and fuck I seen Metallica 21 times, 13 of which were from the front fucking row. I didn't get to see Guns and Roses though, my fucking girlfriend ran off with my fucking brother and robbed our parents house and went to California, where he still is, in Sam Quentin, fucking bastard. Man, what the fuck, but anyways I seen all the 80's bands live and in person, I seen Ozzy with Randy, I seen Cliff before he died, I was there. It was awesome

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 08:59:47 ago (+1/-0)

I missed out on all that because I was a gay snob until the early 2000s. The only metal bands I had any respect for at all was Megadeth and Pantera. I ESPECIALLY detested hair metal. Then I became nongay, got way into metal and hair metal, and realized all the amazing concerts I could've seen.

[ - ] dingbat 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 13:18:48 ago (+1/-0)

Ozzy with Randy? 😇 and Metallica with Cliff? I love you guys here. You’re all at the perfect age, musically, and you have great taste. I became entranced with music at an extremely young age, like 4 or 5. My dad was listing to Dio and the Scorps, new wave was all over the radio, and punk was on local tv channels. I was like this little post-toddler music nerd in the early 80’s and you guys were out living it. Bless you all, seriously. What I wouldn’t give to have been in my late teens at that time.

It was some damned good times

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 11:54:20 ago (+1/-0)

Tower Theater, Sacramento. TSOL opened. 😊

[ - ] dingbat 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 13:13:10 ago (+1/-0)

Ok. HARD STOP. TSOL is one of my favorite bands of all time 🥹 That sounds like heaven on earth! Jack Grisham is a legend. Truth be told, I started listening to TSOL because Axl wore their shirt in the video for ‘Estranged’ in 1991/1992 I think. I was like, hmmmm, who’s this band?

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 16:58:54 ago (+1/-0)

I never listened to TSOL back then or now. I just know that I was at an iconic show, looking back. Crest Theater is still there in Sac, look it up. It’s and old art deco type place, naturally. Axel was wearing white leather pants and a snakeskin jacket. His hair was all ratted up and proofed out. Their album had hit the radio but not yet the record stores when this show went down.
I just took a break to find the ticket stub. I have it, it was just a few months pack I was going through all of them with the wife and now I don’t know where the envelope exactly is. I was gonna send it to you.
Please know that as many shows as I did see. There were so many I missed because of young and broke or my dickhead parents. Mostly because parents. I moved out of the house at fifteen.
My older cousin, Lianne, older by six years, so she’s 61 now. She got to see all the bands, having grown up in Sunnyvale. Shoreline Amphitheater was and still is the place to see everyone. She saw VH numerous times. I never saw them once. That bitch still sees whoever she wants. She dips out from work on a whim and will fly to NY or New Orleans, or wherever, to see a show at the last minute.
She’s a party chick, never married, no kids, a ton of money and does whatever she wants.

[ - ] dingbat 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 18:07:22 ago (+1/-0)

You’ve had a really cool life, Ice :)

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 0 points 1 monthMar 22, 2025 22:37:51 ago (+0/-0)

Oh, thank you. No, really, I didn’t get to see half of the bands I wanted to. And aside from that, my life has been way less than perfect in a crap ton of other ways. I will tell you though, I’m grateful and lucky to be alive.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 3 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 20:50:39 ago (+3/-0)

This makes me want to play electric guitar. I never play electric guitar.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 21:09:05 ago (+3/-0)

Cool, crank it man!

[ - ] mahavishnunj 4 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 22:00:20 ago (+4/-0)

This is kinda interesting. Another one that's been private for 11 years. No idea when or where on this but I can tell it's the ancient Gibson for the guitars. It sounds like one of my cowboy movie songs then gets wacky.
Yoga Pants

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 22:13:48 ago (+2/-0)

Got to love yoga pants! WOo

[ - ] mahavishnunj 4 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 21:10:21 ago (+4/-0)

Here's the closest thing to metal I've ever done. One minute's worth:
Richard Speck's Tits

And another piece of a song that's going to be on the record. It sounds Dregs-y to me. There's no shreddy shit, but it reminds me of one of his 70s mid tempo riffs.

Orange Julius

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 21:29:28 ago (+2/-0)

Cool. I like the Julious one better

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 09:06:56 ago (+1/-0)

Me too. My plan is for the record to be mostly acoustic, but I'm kinda curious what that would sound like full band electric.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 4 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 20:45:11 ago (+4/-0)

My first one, old as usual...I play one of the coolest licks I've ever played:

George Becker

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 20:47:48 ago (+2/-0)

That was certainly different. Zappa-esque

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 09:25:14 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks, it's rare I hear something that I can't figure out. I have no idea what that ascending lick is. I know it's not string skipping, and it's not the same shape all the way up because the lower notes don't follow the higher ones precisely. I'm afraid if I learn it I'll do it in every solo.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 4 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 20:19:34 ago (+4/-0)

I'm not really here. I'll likely check in a few times but then I'll be offline.

I'm not good company right now.

As our Sleazy is going to play bass in a band, I've decided to share this song...

It's a Master Class in Bass and something everyone should find enjoyable, or at least appreciate parts of it.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 4 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 20:30:24 ago (+4/-0)

That's cool as funky can be!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 19:56:24 ago (+1/-0)

I figured I'd inspire you to enjoy the bass role a bit.

That baseline and drumline are what really provide the rhythm. They're important positions in a musical composition, or at least in many modern compositions.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 19:56:58 ago (+1/-0)

Hell yeah!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 20:00:05 ago (+1/-0)

Some say that the bass makes the people dance, though it's really the bass and drums. It's the rhthm that ties it together and the lead that makes 'em go wild. Keys fill in to provide a more robust sound.

And that sums up the majority of rock.

There are exceptions. There are zillions of exceptions.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 21:14:36 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, the drummer guy in this band or whatever said you're playing bass we better be making their butts shake when we do a show

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 1 monthMar 27, 2025 19:13:03 ago (+1/-0)

That is the goal, after all. The drum provides the beat but so doesn't the bass, it just does so with complexity in the texture. It's a rhythm instrument (usually). Even if you play it like a percussion instrument (which is awesome and fun) then you are still in the rhythm section categorically speaking.

Like, if you listen to a bass track from a good bass player, and you listen to just that track, it should still make your head move to the beat or make you tap your toes. It just has greater tonal complexity that can be added to it that can't be added with traditional drums.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 27, 2025 19:49:51 ago (+1/-0)

Hell yeah! Well the band people were supposed to come back last Sunday night but we had a blizzard so nobody showed up

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 1 monthMar 28, 2025 15:01:51 ago (+1/-0)

You can't let a blizzard stop you, at least not for performing. If the venue doesn't cancel, you need to be there when the lights come up. It's your obligation to the people and to the venue.

Anyhow, so I have some virus, so they suspect, attacking my ears, nose, throat, and lungs. I'm to treat the symptoms.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 28, 2025 15:30:35 ago (+1/-0)

I know. That was very disappointing. It wasn't even that bad, well there was 25-30mph winds and we did get about 6" of snow in a 6 hour period, so it was shitty outside. But I had the songs learned and I was ready to jam. It wasn't snowing or windy in my house.

Well damn, you had better get over this virus shit. I have a slight common cold here myself, but it's mostly just a runny nose and general malaise, I am sure it will pass

[ - ] mahavishnunj 4 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 20:47:23 ago (+4/-0)

That's going to be fun to jam to.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 0 points 1 monthMar 22, 2025 19:58:33 ago (+0/-0)

Knock yourself out. LOL If you have fun with it, you can always record it and share it next week.

Over the years, I've had people play along and sing along with my tracks. It has been a fun trip, which is why we're still at it. We used to have a lot more participation. We'd get hundreds of comments in a thread, sometimes over 600 comments and 50+ people who participated.

That was the old Voat, however. We were on Poal before their admin went crazy.

[ - ] mahavishnunj 1 point 1 monthMar 22, 2025 20:58:56 ago (+1/-0)

I was thinking about it last night but couldn't figure out how without a computer. I still can't play worth shit, but I'd love to try that anyway.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 0 points 1 monthMar 27, 2025 19:09:48 ago (+0/-0)

You use a mic and just stick the mic in front of the amp while playing the track through headphones and mixing it at the same time with Audacity.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 4 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 20:02:08 ago (+4/-0)

Earlier this week my buddy Chris came over to play some Irish music for St Patrick's day.

7 Drunken Nights

[ - ] mahavishnunj 3 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 20:55:07 ago (+3/-0)

I was afraid this was going to be annoying loud pub rock, but instead it was a very soothing, mellow drinking song.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1 monthMar 21, 2025 21:30:40 ago (+2/-0)

We even had a lovely audience!
