The reason they don't manufacture practical, small, compact pickup trucks anymore is, believe it or not, due to "environmental protection laws" that require impossible-to-achieve emission control and fuel economy for their size-class. The larger trucks are exempt.
So, you can't buy a little pickup that gets 35mpg because they don't get 75mpg, but you can buy a $75,000 monster that gets 12mpg from every dealership coast to coast.
