Anyone deal with Carpal Tunnel?

submitted by mahavishnunj to Guitar 2 monthsFeb 3, 2025 08:49:31 ago (+9/-1)     (Guitar)

I've been playing since 1989, had my first bout with this in the early 2000s. I managed it without surgery and everything was good for years, minus a few hiccups. Then it started again a few years ago, becoming severe for the last year. I documented the last 6 months' decline if anyone's interested.

So I had the surgery on both hands in January, stitches are coming out of the left one Wednesday. For anyone who has done this, or know someone who has- how long until you could play 100% again? Any permanent issues? When can I beat off normally again?

I have had it on and off...photography (old manual advance lever), guitar, and computers.

Sleeping with wrist supports offered some relief.

They are life savers for sure. I wore them 24/7, except for playing, for a year and a half. Toward the end I was having to wear the left one even while playing, at that point I finally gave up. I just bought my first real recording setup, and was about to start probably the best band I've ever been in when this shit took over, lol.

Sorry to hear that.

I had it in the right hand pretty bad and wound up having the surgery. It wasn't really all that painful, and the recovery time was pretty quick and I was back to work (physical job) in no time. As for a full recovery, I'd say give it four months, maybe. I can't say I've experienced any permanent issues, and am glad I had it done. Just my two cents.

Did you have any spasm issues? Both my hands were doing it bad, especially the right one. Mainly in between the thumb and index finger, but all over the hands and up the arms sometimes. It's still doing it after the surgeries.

Yes, I had spasm issues for a few days, pretty much in the same areas. It seemed to get better after about a week or so, and then pretty much pain free after that. It may take a little while, but I was pretty much back to normal in about four to six months. Now I can't even see my scars.

Sweet, my appointment to get the last stitches out was today. My SIL said she could do it and I'll save $100. She just tried and can't do it. I already canceled the appointment

You done fucked up, son.

The surgery makes it worse?

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 2 points 2 monthsFeb 3, 2025 11:57:29 ago (+2/-0)

No. He’s lying.

[ - ] Gowithit 1 point 2 monthsFeb 3, 2025 11:58:44 ago (+2/-1)

Good to know.

@doctorstrangergov

As you fucking should be.

Carpal tunnel isn't in the wrists,it's muscle strain in the upper forearm. Ergo, wrist surgery won't fix it. What has worked for me is putting the top of my hand and forearm flat against my back and pushing against the back. This helps the muscles to loosen up and, ultimately, get back to normal. It also helps to move the arm, even if it hurts, and get the muscles moving again to unlock them.

"Carpal tunnel isn't in the wrists,it's muscle strain in the upper forearm. Ergo, wrist surgery won't fix it."

This could not possibly be more incorrect on every level. Was that some kind of AI reply?

[ - ] Merlynn 0 points 2 monthsFeb 5, 2025 14:36:34 ago (+0/-0)

I can only tell you what I do to fix it and it works. It takes time but it works.

[ - ] mahavishnunj [op] 0 points 2 monthsFeb 6, 2025 17:27:30 ago (+0/-0)

You mean, you can tell us what you do to fix whatever you've got going that has zero to do with carpal tunnel syndrome. Which is specifically what this thread is about.

[ - ] Merlynn 0 points 2 monthsFeb 6, 2025 22:09:56 ago (+0/-0)

Sure it doesn't. Wouldn't want to lose all that surgery money to a simple technique, right?

[ - ] mahavishnunj [op] 0 points 2 monthsFeb 6, 2025 22:18:48 ago (+0/-0)

So you can't grasp simple concepts OR read. Noted.

[ - ] Merlynn 0 points 2 monthsFeb 6, 2025 23:12:16 ago (+0/-0)

It's funny having an illiterate tell me I can't read. You a common core kid?

[ - ] mahavishnunj [op] 0 points 2 monthsFeb 7, 2025 00:52:35 ago (+0/-0)

I actually told you that you can't grasp simple concepts, in addition to nonexistent reading comprehension. Interesting you didn't refute that, lol. Reread every reply of yours as someone not completely retarded. Wait, that won't be possible. Sorry about your situation!

[ - ] Merlynn 0 points 2 monthsFeb 7, 2025 13:21:47 ago (+0/-0)

Definitely a common core kid.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 2 points 2 monthsFeb 3, 2025 11:56:45 ago (+2/-0)

I have it in both wrists. However, since I quit the trade work 9 years ago and aren’t running power tools and swinging a hammer, all is well. Never had the surgery. Had the braces though.

[ - ] PeckerwoodPerry 3 points 2 monthsFeb 3, 2025 09:15:42 ago (+3/-0)

I've got it in both wrists. It's gotten pretty rough lately. Haven't had the surgery, probably won't.

Also, from one guitar player to another, something tells me you don't beat off "normally".
Good luck.

It's hard enough self flagellating with WORKING hands you know?
