What do you do when it is so bitterly cold outside that you don't want to leave the house? Why, you play your guitar of course. It is the Friday Night Guitar Thread! There's not a much better way to spend a dark winter night than making and sharing some music.

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link.. If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Upgoat.net go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @TheRealBuddha or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

Hello again. Tomorrow afternoon my buddy Chris and I are playing an acoustic show at a birthday party. We been practicing the songs they want to hear. Here is one of them

Let me know how it goes!

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 25, 2025 22:25:59 ago (+1/-0)

It went pretty good. There was a whole lot of snafu's happening all around everywhere, but we ignored all the bullshit without getting upset once and just soldiered through the set list that we been practicing, we were getting no response at all at first, until we played the eating asshole song that we wrote, when we finished that song the crowd erupted, and they were into everything we did after that. then when we got to the end of the acoustic part and did the ten minutes of Ramones, the people were putty in our hands. as long as we kept giving them music to shake their butts to

It was fun.

Sweet! That is indeed the goal. Your job is to make people wiggle with a deeper goal of making them emote. Your goal is to make them feel something in the moment - while also making them wiggle.

And, there are some albums that are absolutely perfect. I could name maybe 100 of them - maybe...

The Dead actually had a couple of albums that had nothing but great songs on them. Not too many bands will have a second album like that. Hell, not many will have even a single album like that.

Though, the above is just my opinion. This is music. People are going to like what they like, I can't say that they're subjectively wrong - usually. They just prefer something that I do not.

For example, rap... I'm not a huge fan of rap - but some of it isn't 100% shit. I might enjoy 10 of 'em. But, I can't say that people who like rap are wrong, they just have different tastes than I have.

And that's okay.

I got a couple friends here playing cards right now tonight, and I played them a bunch of songs that I wrote and recorded by myself and they liked 'em and I heard some that I had not listened to in a long time and I still think that if I had promotion that some of these songs could have became known hits, but hell, having my friends sing along with the chorus and having fun doing it is probably even better than being famous and put through the meat grinder of the industry, for a long time in my life I had this goal of recording an albums worth of these songs I write, just so I could listen to them without having to imagine the rest of it like I have to do when I play the songs on my guitar, so I have actually pretty much achieved what i set out to do. And I do enjoy to listen to the songs I wrote, cause those songs vibrate the way i like

We headed south a bit, 'cause VA isn't that far from NYC. So, we're in VA at the moment.

Cool.

Give that grand kid a great big hug and have some fun with her and make her laugh!

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 27, 2025 21:33:14 ago (+1/-0)

at one point in the rock and roll part of the set, chris actually stopped to light a cigarette and open a beer and take a drink and people were hollering for us to play more

that's way better than them hollering for us to get off the stage

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 3 monthsJan 29, 2025 17:09:59 ago (+1/-0)

That's when you have 'em light your smoke and open your beer for you.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 29, 2025 18:16:53 ago (+1/-0)

I didn't think of that. I waited till after the set to drink

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 3 monthsJan 29, 2025 19:06:38 ago (+1/-0)

We're probably going to hang out here for a while. We'll see.

And, yeah, we're having fun.

Also, you can get the audience to do all sorts of stuff for you, including bringing you drinks. I usually will have a drink or two but I won't get drunk before performing. I owe my audience my best and I'm definitely not my best when I'm drunk.

we are heading out in half an hour or so, at least this time Chris didn't get arrested over night!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 0 points 3 monthsJan 25, 2025 19:57:58 ago (+0/-0)

Good luck! Melt their faces off!

Sounds like a Blaze Foley song. Awesome job and good luck on the gig to you and Chris.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 25, 2025 13:00:10 ago (+1/-0)

That one IS a Blaze Foley song! Good ears!

Thanks!

I'm going to be in and out, mostly out, tonight.

So, how about something from the archives?

Jane's Addiction Stop! (B #1; TB P & B)

Man...

I miss Jane's Addiction. I get why they split up. They just got too big, bigger than they ever wanted to be. They didn't want to make music for the masses. They wanted to make music for their fans - the freakish ones.

They didn't want the pressure or expectations. They also kind of wanted to just get high and do what they wanted in the moment. So, there's that...

Anyhow, I'm in the Big Apple and we're late for dinner. Well, we're not late yet - but we're going to be. Our reservations are for 20:45. Hmm... We'll see if we can get there in 30 minutes.

Like I said, I'll be out more than in. I'm not 100% certain that I'll be back tonight.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 3 monthsJan 24, 2025 20:20:11 ago (+2/-0)

Hell yeah! That sounds fucking great, again!

I loved that album when it came out

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 3 monthsJan 25, 2025 20:02:52 ago (+1/-0)

Ritual De Lo Habitual, as I recall. I think that was the name of the album. It was definitely their best album. They had a whole album full of songs I loved. That doesn't happen often. I don't normally like all the songs on an album - which is why I often prefer 'greatest hits' type of albums.

I know... I know... I'm not supposed to like greatest hit albums, but it means not listening to a pile of pure shit just to enjoy a few tracks. I'm kind of a snob in those regards.

The Rolex 24 (Daytona race) is on. I'm still in NYC. We took the subway around the city today. Biff had never been on a subway. The first time we were here, she'd never been in a skyscraper - so I rented a pretty posh room on the top floor of the hotel and we lived it up.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 25, 2025 22:20:19 ago (+1/-0)

The greatest hits album thing depends on the band. If they have an iconic album like VH 1, there is no point in even trying to introduce that

[ - ] OoklaTheMok 1 point 3 monthsJan 25, 2025 12:18:13 ago (+1/-0)

Great job! It sounds just like the album. It does suck that they are no more. Just like so many other bands I wish I could have seen them in concert one more time. I haven't been to a concert in a decade. Bummer.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 3 monthsJan 25, 2025 19:59:25 ago (+1/-0)

Concerts are absurdly expensive these days, unless you catch a bargain and it's someone that's no longer able to draw huge crowds. You can catch those types of shows for less.

Jane's Addiction put on a hell of a show. You can probably stream some on YouTube but I confess I've never looked for such.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 3 monthsJan 24, 2025 21:55:05 ago (+2/-0)

At our show tomorrow we are playing a dozen acoustic songs and then we are going to let our hair down, change our shirts, stomp on a distortion pedal and play 4 rock and roll songs. Like this here one that we wrote last year.

Guess I'm Going Back To Her Now
