Trying my hand at slow roasted Italian pork sandwiches today

here's the recipe I'm working off

It's gonna be a beautiful possibly monstrous snow day here in the Commonwealth, so this is perfect for after snow blowing.

Couldn't find a bone in pork shoulder, or trader Joe's 21 salute seasoning, but this sucker has plenty of fat. Starting off on high for an hour, then gonna switch to low (not sure why the recipe calls for high all day). Going for Pinot grigio for the wine.

Plan on using provolone and sauteed spinach for the sandwich.

Aldi has great preseasoned pork fyi, if you are looking “carnitas” style. I like to use those brioche buns, a little hot sauce (i use Melindas habanero) and make my iwn slaw and stack the slaw on the pork and aaaaahhhhhhhhhh im fucking stahvin now!

I feel like aldi is hit or miss on meats, and preseason takes the fun out of it

Yeah i am the same with their meats but this is packaged differently and has been excellent every time we get it. Its one of the few meats i get from there. Ill get a pic next time

I feel the same, I don’t buy meat there. Their cheeses though are great.

I buy 2 to three of those at a time and am always happy when I find a surprise one in the deep freezer. Score! easy dinner!

You can't go wrong with slow-cooking a big chunk of meat.

With bone-in the high heat wouldn't be an issue, but without the bone you're probably right to go down to low temp earlier.

We better get a picture of the finished product because I'm starving now.

I gotchu. Using good Kaiser rolls, similar to how a local drive in does, but I should've picked up conshohoken rolls. Oh well. Should be good

[ - ] SteppingRazor 2 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 11:08:23 ago (+2/-0)

That looks like a great recipe. Pork butt is part of the shoulder and would also work great.
I always do my pork butt in the smoker, but this looks like a great alternative for a bunch of people. Just make sure the internal temp is around 200-205.

[ - ] con77 1 point 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 13:22:25 ago (+1/-0)

I usually do my pork butt in the alley behind the bar

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 2 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 12:01:07 ago (+2/-0)

mmmmmmmmm, meat.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 2 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 13:03:14 ago (+2/-0)

Very nice.

I like to cook a week's worth of dinner on the weekends making dinner easier on me for the rest of the week. Doin' the crockpot is a fantastic way for that. Just did pulled-chicken yesterday, even cooked it on solar energy.

Plan on using provolone and sautéed spinach for the sandwich.

I went with sautéed mushrooms and onion with a spinach topper. Great minds and all that.

Do you have solar panels?

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 0 points 3 monthsJan 20, 2025 04:15:14 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah. Got into home-power generation the last couple of years. So I started building a system a bit at a time. A small bit at a time. It's a fun project though.

Add some more broth, butter and some red wine

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 23:10:11 ago (+1/-0)

Cheers

This used to be a weekly thing for me in college. Throw a bone in butt in the crock pot, add garlic cloves and onions and whatever else seemed good, let it go all day and bam! Good meat all week for like $10 or whatever ridiculously low price pork was back in those days.

You must be in the northwest of said commonwealth

But what is Italian about this. I never saw anything like this in Italy.
Italian-American maybe, which is just really American.
Family are trying to go Mediterranean diet at doctors suggestion, which is a good idea as they liver longer healthier lives, but trying to get them to understand med diet is not a diet to them, and what we see as Italian or Greek food isn't what they actually eat.

It's sort of frustrating I guess.

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 14:25:00 ago (+0/-0)

Well it's a South Philly Italian recipe. I'm not Italian, but have Italian family that married in I grew up next to in the burbs

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 3 monthsJan 20, 2025 00:27:24 ago (+0/-0)

Do they live longer and better? Only the Northern Italians live long and they eat almost completely different from the south. Turkey and Morocco are on the Mediterranean too but they are not longevity leaders. An island in Greece is supposed to be the “blue zone” with many centenarians but they are usually fat and old and eat completely different to what you may think.

Forget having a unified Mediterranean diet, there’s no unified Italian diet even. In the south they eat more pasta and seafood but in the north they eat more meat and risotto. The only thing a lot of countries in the Mediterranean may have in common is eating a lot of cheese and also refined grains and maybe wine. So tell your family to have Parmesan and blue cheese with bread and pasta every meal and a burgundy or any wine at dinner

Good see you getting inspired to cook. If you get into it more ditch that croc pot. They aren't really good other than for convenience.

In an enamel Dutch oven, you can sear off that meat a little. Take it out, soften the onions and garlic, then put it all in the oven at much more precise temp in an environment it will cook a lot more evenly.

Even on low those CrocPots put a lot of heat on the bottom and almost none on top, so you get end up getting dry meat at the bottom and tougher meat up top. Most people that use those end up cooking everything to mush.

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 17:25:00 ago (+1/-0)

Good idea. I do have an oven safe skillet I've used for other things in that manner.Just broke up the meat, very very tender. So far success

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 3 monthsJan 20, 2025 00:30:48 ago (+0/-0)

Hey you know you might have explained why I never liked crockpot meals.
Anyway, men cooking is pretty gay unless it’s a high level chef bringing in seven figures

[ - ] xmasskull 0 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 19:06:11 ago (+0/-0)

So,how did your "Pork" sandwiches turn out?

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 19:49:16 ago (+1/-0)

Fucking delicious. Yeah, I'm still in love with a jewess from the past, and probably have greasy rabbis crawling all over my page. Life sucks, but the sandwich was rewarding

[ - ] dirtywhiteboy 1 point 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 23:13:33 ago (+1/-0)

Wut

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 23:23:10 ago (+0/-0)

I'm unfortunately not over a jewess I thought I was, as may be reflected in some of my works. It ain't easy stepping out on a ledge like that.

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 3 monthsJan 20, 2025 00:29:10 ago (+0/-0)

How come you guys don’t have wives to cook for ya? Or does she wears the pants and brings home the bacon and you put on a pretty pink apron on and do all the cooking and cleaning?

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 20, 2025 00:30:16 ago (+0/-0)

Women have caused my enough trouble

[ - ] Gowithit -1 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 09:45:26 ago (+1/-2)

When I saw that garlic sauteed spinach in the recipe I thought this would be great on rice and there it was at the end. Sounds good.

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 10:16:32 ago (+1/-0)

Wasn't planning on rice, but damn I love rice. Give it a go

[ - ] Ragnar 1 point 3 monthsJan 20, 2025 00:32:39 ago (+1/-0)

Rice is gross
