My kid has been really into puzzles lately.

submitted by MaryXmas to Fatherhood 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 07:19:26 ago (+31/-0)     (Fatherhood)

It has actually been pretty great. We hit up the dollar store and got a bunch of them. We did a 100 piece together and he was contributing much more than I was expecting. It says 7+ and he is still 4. He can rip through the 24 piece puzzles in 5 minutes.

The next excursion is likely to be some second hand legos-by-the-pound I picked up a while back. I was pretty happy to find that.

Buy him a puzzle of the periodic table. They sell em on amazon. He can do puzzles and learn chemistry simultaneously.

Facepalm moment of the decade.

[ - ] PostWallHelena -2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 14:26:03 ago (+0/-2)

Boy, you are really thirsty today. How much time did you spend trying to brigade that comment?

[ - ] big_fat_dangus 1 point 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 14:32:36 ago (+2/-1)

How much time did you spend being so clueless you think putting a puzzle together equates to learning chemistry, girl?

[ - ] PostWallHelena -2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 14:46:50 ago (+0/-2)

What do you think theyre learning here? Astronomy? Memorizing the periodic table will allow them to gain some fundamental knowlege of chemistry. I think you are trying to willfully misinterpret my statement to mean that I implied they will have mastered chemistry by completing a puzzle—which absolutely no one thinks I meant! It only serves to underline what a desperate hard-on you have for me. Rent free! 😘

Memorizing the periodic table will allow them to gain some fundamental knowlege of chemistry

Wrong, and a dead giveaway that you know nothing on the topic. But we both knew that 😘

[ - ] PostWallHelena -2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 17:25:43 ago (+0/-2)

Sure. Knowing the periodic table isn’t useful for chemistry. Sell it to someone who hasn’t taken chemistry, you salty fat bio-clown 🤡

[ - ] Gowithit -2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 14:37:21 ago (+0/-2)

He's probably referring to experiential learning vs. rote memorization. Maybe. If thats the case there is a minecraft game for that.

Yeah that blank memorization is such a scam. Have you seen or heard all the commotion about (((sight words)))?

https://features.apmreports.org/sold-a-story/

that podcast is just a blanket summary but holy shit are the intentions evil.

[ - ] PostWallHelena -2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 17:22:41 ago (+0/-2)

Don’t try to rehabilitate his shit comment. I suggest an educational puzzle and his reply is “facepalm of the day” ? He’s just trying to make hay from a completely uncontroversial comment.

cHeMiStRy PuZzLe ?!! OmG sO rEtArDeD!!

All incredulous. Lol. He’s full of shit.

Rote memorization is completely necessary and memorizing the periodic table is totally useful for doing chemistry. I don’t know why people say rote memorization isnt useful? I guess they have bad memories. Memorization is easiest at 8 or 10. If you know the periodic table by then you will never forget it and it will make any chemistry you do later much easier. And about 2x faster. A lot of physics too.

[ - ] Gowithit -1 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 17:43:26 ago (+0/-1)*

I will disagree. Rote memorization is how we get morons and a sure way to block the child wanting to learn in the future.

Don’t try to rehabilitate his shit comment.

Words are hard and I figured he needed a helping hand.

[ - ] PostWallHelena -2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 18:20:11 ago (+0/-2)

Oh come on. We get morons because we let stupid people breed. Any child smart enough to use chemistry in a future profession will benefit from memorizing the periodic table. You teach them their ABC’s dont you? Hows this different? Memorization doesn’t block a child from wanting to learn.

Kids that have the intelligence to do these skills eat this crap up. Kids with more average or lower IQs don’t find these subjects interesting.

Anyway thats not why he made that reply. Did you see -3 points on my comment? You really think that was a spontaneous reaction to my puzzle suggestion? His brigading me because I told him to stop brigading BC. A whole slew of my comments suddenly have -3 or -4 points. Is there still a question as to whether he’s involved?

[ - ] Gowithit -2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 18:29:12 ago (+0/-2)

I dropped about 10 in 12 minutes lol. its fine. The rote memorazationers plight of not knowing anything but to click buttons affects us all.

Memorization doesn’t block a child from wanting to learn.

It discourages.

Puzzles are excellent exercise for the mind . Old folks homes have them because they are proven to improve alzheimer's symptoms.

[ - ] Freestoner 2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 10:15:00 ago (+2/-0)

Worked a puzzle with my daughter and son in law the other night. Good times.

[ - ] Fishsticksforever 2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 10:27:46 ago (+2/-0)

Good on you! I wish I had my Legos from when I was a kid, but they got tossed when I moved out without my knowledge.
It was probably $1K worth of Legos today.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 21:24:07 ago (+0/-0)

That's a boomer move. My parents sold my car for a quarter of what it was worth and said I should be happy.

[ - ] HonkyMcNiggerSpic 2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 10:48:09 ago (+2/-0)

I get one from Hobby Lobby once in a while and get it started on the table and my kids can't walk past it without working it for a little bit. Its funny. My grandparents did the same thing to me.

[ - ] GodDoesNotExist 2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 11:51:15 ago (+2/-0)

Twisty Puzzles are cool too (Rubiks) all shapes and sizes

[ - ] Razzoriel 2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 13:08:27 ago (+2/-0)

My eldest loved that a couple years ago. Thanks for that thread, we have a weekend activity now.

[ - ] SithEmpire 2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 13:21:27 ago (+2/-0)

See if you can find Tantrix, a set of 56 hexagonal tiles which move and rotate to match their patterns.

It comes with some challenges involving subsets of the tiles, and it involves a lot of puzzling over parity and convex/concave curvature.

[ - ] Her0n 3 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 09:06:48 ago (+3/-0)

That's so awesome, I look forward to the Lego age with mine. Keep up the good work!

[ - ] Doglegwarrior 3 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 11:26:28 ago (+3/-0)

Go crazy with Legos! And yes second hand boxes of them is the way to go screw these stupid ones you follow instructions let his imagination go wild

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 3 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 12:52:54 ago (+3/-0)

He might like blacksmith puzzles then. They're these little metal pieces you have to figure out how to get apart, and put back together like a 3-d puzzle. Some are made of wood. Lots of fun and you can get a bunch for a few bucks online.

[ - ] ruck_feddit 3 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 13:50:02 ago (+3/-0)

Be sure to take a break from puzzling to yell at him for holding a flashlight wrong. These are important lessons.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 16:25:00 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, when I am working under the car and can't see shit. Got it. 👍

[ - ] Merlynn 3 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 14:32:05 ago (+3/-0)*

Remember to clean off the legos. You never know where kids have been shoving them. Also, you can find lots of great stuff at dollar and discount stores. I'm constantly amazed at what's there. Also, chess is nice but after a point, you realize the limits of the game and want to move on. They put out Heroquest First Light for 50 bucks. Good first dungeon crawler.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 16:24:13 ago (+1/-0)

To your point on chess, no man has ever found the "limits" of chess; you just find new opponents.

[ - ] Merlynn 1 point 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 20:06:44 ago (+1/-0)

Tell it to Bobby Fischer.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 21:22:07 ago (+1/-0)

Bobby Fischer never lost a game?

[ - ] Merlynn 0 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 23:00:02 ago (+0/-0)

Only when he had to. Then he stopped and the jews went after him.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 18, 2025 09:06:01 ago (+0/-0)

Sounds like he found a new opponent.

[ - ] Merlynn 0 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2025 09:35:38 ago (+0/-0)

No,the jews are old opponents to anyone who isn't them.

[ - ] HunkasaurusRex 5 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 09:27:24 ago (+5/-0)

my kid can change his own diapers but he's 14, don't feel bad your boy will catch up eventually

[ - ] SundayMatinee 5 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 10:08:58 ago (+5/-0)

Better not to look up his browser history unless you're ready for disappointment on a level that will see you disown him.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 16:20:05 ago (+1/-0)

Block it at the router.

[ - ] AugustineOfHippo2 6 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 07:26:11 ago (+6/-0)

Dollar store is great for that kind of thing.
My kids have so many Legos, they could open up a store. When my son was 5, I got a Lego set for him and I would hand him each piece so he could put it together. That is some really quality time, building things together.
Keep up the great work, and have more babies.

[ - ] fritz_maurentod 7 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 09:52:24 ago (+7/-0)

Never let those fuckers send him to war.

[ - ] Sector2 11 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 07:26:02 ago (+11/-0)

At 4, he's ready to learn how to play chess.

[ - ] x0x7 6 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 09:25:45 ago (+6/-0)

Be sure to be as angry and demanding as you can be and record it. People will perceive it as sentimentality. At least the NPCs with no inner-monologue will.

Be sure that both sides of the dialog with your son sound like it was written by a single person as a cheaply emotional exposition on how chess works.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 3 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 08:55:00 ago (+3/-0)

Ah, maybe that will be the next one. Which opener should I teach him first? French? I always loved the Sicilian.

[ - ] canbot 3 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 13:58:30 ago (+3/-0)

All the popular kids are doing the cow opening now.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 16:18:59 ago (+1/-0)

At this point, the kids are just screaming "moo" at me because they think it's funny. 🤣

[ - ] Sector2 2 points 3 monthsJan 17, 2025 09:26:50 ago (+3/-1)

Definitely not Anna Cramling's Cow opening. (If you watch any chess on youtube shorts) General moves and strategies would probably be a good start.
