Mainly acoustic guy here-you are doing it right. I don't require no cutaway, but nothing sounds shittier than a plugged in acoustic. Even when I used an Ovation forever, I never plugged it in. For amplification/recording I've seen Julian Lage use this thing that looks like a headset mic almost, that aims at the soundhole from above. In the meantime, a mic in front of it is fine.

I'm going to mic it tomorrow night. It has been really good with no mic, but I want to hear some of the finer points, maybe add some bass eq. I did find another jumbo and it is really great. Good upgrade. On the electric side I went away from the big hollow body to the thinner hollow body with tighter pickups.

Before I had to take an extended break, I fucked around with various setups. I have a Baggs preamp/DI but it made no difference in level or tone, either mic'd or direct. No combination of anything was working until this-I remembered I have a little TubePre preamp with just 1 tube in it. Guitar>mic>tube preamp>solid state acoustic amp. Volume and tone for days.

Which jumbo do you have? I've never had one, my main guitar is kinda in between(no electronics though):

One day I’d like to buy a bass guitar and possibly an upright bass. I don’t play music enough to justify the expenses.

I have a cello and play it like once per week. Somehow, I get a little more proficient with each session.

What little bit I practice produces great leaps everyday. It is pretty amazing to observe. Wish I had a cello. I would probably try to make the notes as long and even as possible. That would be fun

Just figuring out how to use the bow was a trip. Having no frets really challenges your sense of pitch. I still can’t do the hand vibrato thing.

Sure makes the guitar feel like a beginner instrument. Played guitar daily with my friends in high school.

Would LOVE to buy a bassoon. But I’ll never have time to play it.

Started learning mandolin a few years ago, probably pick it up every two weeks or so. It does make the guitar seem simple, and it's a bitch to tune. I love the sound of it though, I'm sure it'll be fun in a few years when I get better at it.
