Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link.. If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Upgoat.net go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @TheRealBuddha or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

I was sitting here thinking the night before Thanksgiving that there's not any Thanksgiving songs, so I made one up

Happy Thanksgiving

I have internet again!

I'm going to bed.

This is what I share every Turkey Day...

https://share.fngt.gq/music/rock/classic/ZZ%20Top%20-%20I%20Thank%20You%20%28B%20%231%20%26%20%232%3B%20J%20B%20%26%20K%3B%20TB%20%233%20%26%20D%29.mp3

Gotta love some ZZ Top. I should do Alice's Restaurant one of these years. I know all the words but it's a goddamned long song.

I'll check in tomorrow. I took extra sleepy meds.

I am in bed. LOL

It took more than 24 hours for them to restore power...

Man, I hope it improves with fiber - but I don't think it's going to. I'm still going to have to maintain some sort of backup.

Ah well... At least I'll have speedy internet when the weather is nice!

I'll go through and listen to the tracks tomorrow, I hope. I've got some shit to do, including grabbing my deer. I plan on doing that tomorrow morning.

Then, next week (I got a moose permit this year) I have just about two weeks to get my bull moose in this zone. I shouldn't have any trouble filling the tag. It's zone and time limited, but we've got a lot of moose around this year.

Have a good night!

Good luck on the moose hunt!

It was the last day for deer hunting, so I had to make sure I got my deer. I was a little late getting to my usual spot so I had to wait around and hike around a bit. But, I know that they like to go get a drink during the day, instead of bedding down in fields or whatnot, and they tend to go to the same area.

I eventually settled in where I could see the trail they use and I was downwind of the trail. That did the trick. I wasn't sure how many were going to go get a drink so I waited until they were on the return trip. I picked a good size buck. They were all males in this group, so all fairly young - a few years old and not yet mating. So, I picked the 2nd largest out of the group.

It was a bitch (at first) and a half dragging it to the 4 wheeler. At the game station, the recorded weight was 220 lbs. So, a good size buck - and not even the largest of them. That means I've done well with my hunting and managing of the herd.

As for getting the deer out, I field dressed the buck and rolled it onto a tarp. I wrapped it up and was pulling it out. Another hunter heard the shot and came along about 30 minutes into the ordeal and they helped me drag the deer out.

In exchange for their help, I showed them where they could wait until just before dusk and likely see a deer. As it's my land, I told him to please not shoot the largest buck unless they had no choice. That made getting the deer out quite a bit easier as I was quite some way from the 4 wheeler.

Oh, they did send me a text to thank me. They got a smaller buck. I think they said it was 160 lbs, which is still a good size deer. That'll feed 'em for the winter.

I moose hunt starting tomorrow. I'll have my son (and his buddy) on standby, ready to come in assist me in getting the moose out of the woods. I'll just use my phone's GPS to set a pin and then send the pin to them so they don't have to come looking for me and I don't need to go out to the road to guide them in.

I'll be moose hunting mostly on the mountain. They'll be up near where the trees start to thin out - unless it's 'bad' weather. If it's snowing or windy, they'll move down further into heavier growth.

In the afternoon, I might drive around. You can't hunt from a vehicle. You can however drive your vehicle. You need to get 50' off the road before you're allowed to shoot anything. Game wardens will set up fake animals and trap idiots who hunt from their car (called 'heater hunting' by the locals) and don't follow the rules.

You MUST not be on the roadway. You MUST be 50' from the roadway. That includes the right-of-way, meaning it even includes the shoulder of the road. For safety sake (that is safe in not violating the laws) you should get at least 100' off the road before taking a shot.

So, what you do is you drive around. If you spot something, keep driving slowly. Stop up the road a few hundred feet, exit your vehicle quietly, and then leave the road and quietly work back to where you saw the animal.

Otherwise, you get a REALLY big fine (maybe) and lose your license to hunt for a few years. They even take away your fishing license.

So, don't do that.

Also, poaching is a shitty thing to do - with one exception. If you're REALLY fucking poor, you should be allowed to go take a deer or moose. You'd better have less than $100 to your name and an empty fridge. You'd better be destitute to the point of starvation.

But, if you're in that situation then I firmly believe you should be able to use the resources to feed you and your family.

That's the only situation where I'd excuse poaching.

I follow the game laws exactly, or better. It's a shared resource. I only take my share and nothing more. I don't even always take my share. I leave some for the next person. I make the environment better than it was when I got there.

So, I don't poach and I don't like poaching. If you poach, you're stealing from my children. If you poach, you're stealing from their children. Don't do it.

If you're on my land, I can ask (and you must show me) your hunting/fishing license. If I see you, I will ask to see your license. You will show me your license or I will take your picture and call the game warden and police. You will go to jail. They'll even take your firearms/fishing equipment. They are on my land. It's the law. They must show me their license when asked.

So far, I've never had an issue. I did have a lost guy from out of state who wandered onto my posted property. I gave them directions back to their vehicle and scolded them. They absolutely should have seen a sign when they crossed onto posted property. There's a sign every 100' or so. Sometimes, they're every 50' or so, just to make sure you saw them.

Congrats on bagging a buck! Today is the last day of deer hunting here. Chris has been up north at deer camp all since a week ago Saturday, and yesterday he messaged me saying, imagine looking up from your phone and there's a deer 5 feet away from you. LoL he didnt mention if he shot it or not, but I am assuming he did.

Good luck on the moose hunt today.

And no poaching!

Thanks. I found my moose today. I didn't get a clean shot but now I know where he hangs out and moose only range over a limited area. They're generally hanging out in the same area, though they may move a bit for the seasons.

He was too far away for me to make a clean shot. I also didn't have an easy way to get him back. I'd have to cut him into pieces and make multiple trips or wait for help to get to me - and I was pretty deep in the woods.

So, tomorrow - maybe... He's a good looking moose. I'd say he's close to 1100 pounds, maybe bigger. I'm surprised he's not with a female moose. He's big enough to be breeding. That means there are larger moose (and there are) that are older and more aggressive. This one has been eating well.

Then again, it was a good year for that.

Also, the Niners fucking suck donkey balls. They lost, but of course they did.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 5 monthsDec 2, 2024 17:49:47 ago (+1/-0)

You're not going drag an 1100 pound moose out of the woods without chopping into pieces

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 4 monthsDec 3, 2024 17:02:00 ago (+1/-0)

I had the moose I'm after in my scope. He was still too far away to take a shot. I'm very particular about it and he was well over 1,000 yards away. I'm very keen on not causing additional suffering. I strenously work to have a 'one shot, one kill' result. I prefer the animal to drop in less than three to five steps, if at all.

I also don't want to track a wounded animal around. That's not on my list of shit to do. It's too much effort. I could not find the wounded animal, as I might be unable to track it. It would mean that the animal suffered.

I'm not entirely altruistic. Animals that suffer in death taste different. That's why they process beef critters the way they do. It's not a humane thing, it's 'it'll sell better if it isn't full of endorphines and other chemicals released by the brain when the animal is in pain'.

But, he's easy to pick out. He's got a light patch on his rump. I may be overly optimistic about his weight. I got a better look and he could be anywhere from 800 pounds to 1200 pounds. I really couldn't tell from the distance but he might be skinnier along the haunch than I thought - which means he's probably just 3 to 5 years old.

I got to watch him for a good 15 minutes. It was a bit late in the day and he was headed down into the thicker forest. He mulled around in the clearing for a while, so I assume he had been digging in the snow for any remaining vegetation. Pretty soon, he'll live mostly off the nutrients he can get from the ends of tree limbs and anything he can scrounge up beneath the snow - until the snow is too deep for him.

They'll move at that point. You'll see more of them crossing the road. They still stay within same 8 to 12 miles, but that grows to as much as 20 miles in the winter. They're also creatures of habit, just like deer.

Here's a good hunting tip - for both moose or deer...

If you jump a deer/moose, just wait.

They're very curious and will make a circle of about a mile. They'll do this over 30 to 60 minutes.

They'll come back around to see if what jumped them is still there and to better decide if it's safe.

So, just find a spot to be reasonably hidden, keep your mouth shut, don't make noise, and wait. Give it an hour. If the animal hasn't been back around in an hour, it means it knows you're still there. It is then unlikely to show itself.

But, they'll make that circle most of the time. All you need to do is wait. They'll be back.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 4 monthsDec 3, 2024 17:47:56 ago (+1/-0)

That hunting tip is similar to squirrel hunting. If you see one and it sees you and hides. Just sit still 15 minutes and it will come back out

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 4 monthsDec 3, 2024 17:49:12 ago (+1/-0)

Shit I hit post too fast

But are you going to take up a position close than 1000 yards from where you have seen the moose? That seems like a very long shot to me

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 0 points 5 monthsDec 2, 2024 21:09:40 ago (+0/-0)

I usually do cut it into quarters. If I get some help I can sort of divide the animal in half. (I'll be bringing all the gear with me, including a bone saw.)

I can field dress a deer in like 15 minutes. It's a lot longer to prepare a moose for dragging out of the woods. They much prefer you drag it out whole, so that it can be easily weighed at the game stations. So, if I can get to it with the 4 wheeler, I can get it wrapped in a tarp and drag it out behind me - probably with some physical help unless it's wide open spaces.

Then, I've got to get it into the back of my truck. I'll have the winch on the 4 wheeler and ramps to winch it up into the back of the truck.

At the game station, I can just drive under the scales, hook it up, and then drive out from under them. I can then just reverse the process to put the moose back into the truck's bed.

It's a lot of work getting a moose.

But, they're delicious. I only get a permit every so often. They do permits on a lottery system - with points added for things like the length of time it has been since you last got a moose tag. They also change the number of permits based on the number of moose available. Game wardens count and then extrapolate to decide the numbers.

It's too late to bother but try to catch the highlights of the Georgia Tech vs Georgia game.

It's amazing!

(I'm supposed to be asleep. They're now in their 3rd OT.)

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 5 monthsNov 29, 2024 23:56:05 ago (+1/-0)

7th overtime...

The record is 9 OT periods.

This is fucking amazing.

Georgia finally won...

Now I'm really going to bed...

I hope...

I should be able to sleep soon.

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 5 monthsNov 30, 2024 00:30:08 ago (+2/-0)

Haha. I watched it too. Didn't think anybody else was watching it. Cool game. I didn't know the college OT rules till tonight. That Georgia coach is very well spoken.

Texas vs. Texas A&M tomorrow. I think the winner plays Georgia for the SEC title.

To quote the great ZZ Top, I thank you. For your ZZ Top song.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 0 points 5 monthsDec 1, 2024 11:16:16 ago (+0/-0)

I think the rules in the NFL are the same for OT as they are in NCAA football regulations.

After they each start on the 25 and get to try scoring, assuming it's still a tie, it goes to 2 point attempts.

I think the NFL might have a limit to how many 2 point attempts there are, but I'm not sure. I suppose Google knows the answer.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 5 monthsNov 30, 2024 00:29:33 ago (+1/-0)

I didnt know Georgia was playing LoL

This one is one that will tear at your heart strings

Hello in there by John Prine.

This shit gives me goosebumps

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 5 monthsNov 29, 2024 22:05:28 ago (+2/-0)

Damn that is beautiful. Chris K that one TFO. I think it's about somebody's mind is gone and there is somebody in there. Not a lyrics kinda guy.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 5 monthsNov 29, 2024 22:14:33 ago (+1/-0)

I am not a lyrics guy either myself, but listening to Chris sing that made goosebumps on my arms. I dont lsiten to what he is saying when we are playing, I am focused on the music and trying not to fuck that up, you know, but man, when I heard this playing back I was like wow, what a powerful song

[ - ] ChatGPT 1 point 5 monthsNov 29, 2024 23:41:05 ago (+1/-0)

Yes the music is the main thing. The lyrics just go along for the ride. But sometimes the lyrics grab a hold of ones attention. This may be one of those songs. Gotta listen again to make sure.
