Well, we had a frost this morning. We've had a few. That means winter is on the way. The foliage has lost its luster and many leaves have fallen to the ground. That's okay... We still haev the Friday Night Guitar Thread! Come join us!

submitted by TheRealBuddha to Guitar 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 19:55:07 ago (+18/-1)     (Guitar)

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should upgoat go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @Sleazy or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

Yup. We had frost this morning too, and the forecast is looking pretty chilly going forward. Seems winter may be starting a little early this year... which I suspect means it might be a cold one.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 20:52:31 ago (+2/-0)

I am optimistic. I love the snow and cold.

If I didn't, I'd not live where I live. LOL

Some mountain areas already have seen their first snow (here in the US). We probably won't see much snow, if any, until mid-November. I'm also at a higher elevation than many (in my area). I'm about 3400' ASL.

Well, I don't have anything new. I should have something new. We have a project that's nearly done. It was supposed to get finished but then I had a death in the family and had to travel across the country. Then, for reasons, I had to drive all the way back across the country. (That's not as big a trip as it seems to be, if you've never done it before. You can do it in a few days if you've got an iron butt and a good bladder.)

So, then, what to share? Here's something from the archives:

Classical Variations

It's kind of funny... People hear the quick rills and the like and think that those are the hard parts. Those are actually the easiest parts. It's more often the slow parts that are a challenge for classical guitar. You're doing things like very complicated chord patterns that stretch across as many as seven frets. Those are the hard parts. The runs and rills are relatively easy in comparision.

Sure, that's not always true - but it's true more often than not.

Anyhow, enjoy and...

Rock on, Goats! Rock on!

Your link has an apostrophe at the end that is stopping it from working

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 20:05:29 ago (+3/-0)

The brackets were gone, as was the opening parenthesis. Weird, they're in the text that I copied and pasted from.

Anyhow, they should be fixed. Thanks!

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 20:17:54 ago (+3/-0)

I meant to say parenthesis, not apostrophe, LoL but it sounds great

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 20:53:42 ago (+3/-0)

It also ate the brackets that housed the song's title. I dunno why...

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 20:23:57 ago (+2/-0)

Did you see the news, Phil Lesh has passed away

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 20:55:10 ago (+2/-0)

I had not heard that yet. Thanks for telling me.

I've been to quite a few Dead shows in my life. Given their lifestyles, I'm surprised they lived as long as they did. I'll be a little sad when Hart dies. He's an amazing drummer.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 21:13:52 ago (+2/-0)

You're welcome.

Sad to hear of this but at least he made it to 74. Like you said, he was lucky to make it. Just like you and I are too

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 21:43:41 ago (+2/-0)

I am often amazed that I've lived this long. I was sort of doubtful that I'd make it to 25 years of age. Yet, so far, nothing has killed me. I'm bound to die at some point.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 22:33:26 ago (+1/-0)

we all are bound to die at some point.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 7 monthsOct 26, 2024 17:23:10 ago (+0/-0)

Yup. Death doesn't scare me. I don't mind it. I just don't want it to be a drawn out and painful affair. I think that's a reasonable request. Keep me heavily medicated and that'll be good enough for me.

[ - ] OoklaTheMok 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 21:30:57 ago (+2/-0)

This is one of the songs that you played for the collection of classical songs for your granddaughter, right? Still impressive. Well done.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 21:46:07 ago (+2/-0)

Indeed, thanks. I ended up with a collection (most of which has been shared) of classical work to fill a CD. I've since replaced the CD once, so it gets played often. She's much older now, even going to school, but she still listens to it when she goes to sleep.

Most of what is on the album can be found in the archives.

How's life at your end of things? Holding up okay?

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 22:53:19 ago (+2/-0)

I love that number 7 that J wrote, i am in love

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 7 monthsOct 26, 2024 17:23:50 ago (+1/-0)

She's got some mad skills on a number of instruments.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 19:58:00 ago (+3/-0)

6 years ago this week, this happened.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 20:03:04 ago (+3/-0)

Yup... Though, I think it was the 28th or 30th... I want to say the 30th 'cause that's what is stuck in my head.

Sadly, I can only upvote your comment once.

Man, that changed my life in so many ways. Then again, being flat on your back for a few months, except when doing PT and the like) will give you plenty of time for reflection.

All those years and it still fucking hurts.

[ - ] OoklaTheMok 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 21:26:40 ago (+2/-0)

YES!!!!! Poor Buddha's hip. Nice, Sleazy. I remember this one. lol

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 22:34:23 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks!

I think this song stood the test of time. it still rocks to my ears!

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 20:30:42 ago (+3/-0)

My buddy Chris came to town earlier this week and he was here when I got bashed in the head, we played this Blaze Foley song, Officer Norris

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 20:53:04 ago (+2/-0)

Huh... I've never even heard of Blaze Foley, as far as I recollect.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 21:11:32 ago (+3/-0)

He is one of my buddy Cris favorites, he says that's wild, and you should listen to him sometime

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 21:42:29 ago (+2/-0)

I'll make a mental note to do so. He sounds like he might be interesting.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 22:33:47 ago (+2/-0)

Blaze Foley

just reminding your brain cells

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 7 monthsOct 25, 2024 22:42:00 ago (+2/-0)

Chris and I were just jamming out, letting the music flow through us on acoustic guitars and it sounds like we're in a pizzaria

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 7 monthsOct 26, 2024 17:20:52 ago (+1/-0)

Hmm... Oddly, I had pizza last night. It's a 'recipe' from my mom, I guess. Basically, it's lazy pizza where you just use English Muffins as the base and put pizza toppings on them. We even get tiny pepperoni to put on them.

Man, I could never be a Jew. Unlike you all, I don't actually hate 'em by default but I really fucking love pork products. A life without bacon isn't worth living!

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 7 monthsOct 26, 2024 17:22:15 ago (+1/-0)

I have not had bacon in a while, at least a month, there is some in the fridge

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 7 monthsOct 26, 2024 17:28:02 ago (+1/-0)

They make some delicious bacon on the farm.

I'm reminded of a story... I'm too lazy to type it out today, but I once (before I owned the farm) went over and drunkenly rummaged through the farm's outbuildings until I finally found some bacon. I then took said bacon home with me. I left them a note that was pure gibberish and a $20 bill. For a little while they called me the Bacon Bandit.

In my defense, they had invited me to get bacon 'any time'. That probably didn't extend to mean after midnight and while drunk, but it was any time.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 7 monthsOct 26, 2024 17:37:26 ago (+1/-0)

Thats funny, you must have had the munchies pretty strong

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 7 monthsOct 26, 2024 18:14:50 ago (+1/-0)

I wanted bacon, I suppose. It took me a while to remember which building had the bacon. I was really wasted. I suspect there was more than alcohol involved, given that period of my life. But, that seems like something that's alcohol fueled.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 7 monthsOct 26, 2024 18:27:34 ago (+1/-0)

I would definitely suspect alcohol was involved in that kind of adventure

it was pretty crazy around here last night

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 7 monthsOct 26, 2024 18:30:45 ago (+1/-0)

Was it crazy, or just a normal night at your house?

Also, I went out for a long bike ride today. I almost had to lay it down on some wet leaves but I managed to make it through and brake my way out of it. I figure it'll be the last chance I get to take a bike out this year.

That's okay... I have plenty of toys for winter driving. In fact, I have my guys working on something special.

Man, my bandwidth sucks tonight. I am eagerly awaiting fiber.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 7 monthsOct 26, 2024 19:20:12 ago (+1/-0)

It was not a normal night at my house. I can't even really say, or I don't know if I should, so I wont LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 7 monthsOct 26, 2024 19:35:12 ago (+1/-0)

LOL Well, that's definitely not normal. You'd normally tell me all about it.

It doesn't matter to me.

Speaking of your end of things, how's Verle holding up?

Also, does anyone know how long his son had been dead before he was found?

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 2 points 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 18:40:38 ago (+2/-0)

Wooo. I missed the thread other day but pumped out two tracks dealing in some visceral primordial minimalist chaos... Second track is a short instrumental

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 19:12:09 ago (+0/-0)

My internet is wonky and few people will see your submission because they don't come check the thread this late.

@sleazy will also see it - 'cause I just pinged him.

As my 'net is wonky, I just listened to the Eastern Time track. (I wasn't sure what else to listen too and that took way too long to load anyhow.)

I like the intro. It sort of reminds me of a clock ticking - but, more interestingly, it reminds me of a child's toy.

Remember those old toys (kids would never play with one today) where it was basically a keyboard that activated a xylophone? They came in many formats but it was basically just a mechanical toy that hid a hammer and xylophone. They were popular from at least the late 1950s, but I'm sure they predate that.

No self-respecting child would play with such a thing today. They've become more 'sophisticated'.

Anyhow, the clanking and clanging (for wont of better terms) reminds of that. It brings me back to my youth in a way.

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 19:15:17 ago (+1/-0)

Perfect. It is a childs keyboard with amazing effects. It was all pretty much written on the spot as some sort of joke of self fulfilling prophecy... Then overdubbed with bandlab synth horns

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 19:26:02 ago (+0/-0)

Ha! I nailed it! LOL

I dunno how many folks would nail that today, but I have some pretty good hearing (and experience).

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 19:31:43 ago (+1/-0)

Right on. I'm pretty rusty, my heart's more in poetry these days, but I may deletante around some.

Did you guys do any dead tributes?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 19:35:43 ago (+1/-0)

I didn't have time. I have shared some Dead in the past but didn't have time for anything new.

I've shared Ripple and Touch of Grey. I see Ripple in my local archives but am not seeing Touch of Grey anywhere locally. So, that one may be lost to time.

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 20:44:57 ago (+0/-0)

is the instrument you are playing a symphonic grand piano like Schroeder from the peanuts has? I have one of them sitting right beside me as i type

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 20:55:21 ago (+1/-0)

It's a super sound tm, I picked up at a flea market

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 21:01:44 ago (+0/-0)

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 20:47:23 ago (+0/-0)

sounds cool. I just played it for my company here at the house tonight, and we all enjoyed it

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 20:53:13 ago (+1/-0)

At my expense I'm sure

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 21:02:43 ago (+0/-0)

no, actually, they were getting into the melody

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 21:10:54 ago (+1/-0)

We could call it post-pop

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 21:24:08 ago (+0/-0)

Chris said it was jazz

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 21:30:50 ago (+1/-0)

Is it a famous Chris?

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 21:31:52 ago (+0/-0)

I dont know, infamous maybe

We jam on our guitars

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 7 monthsOct 28, 2024 21:37:08 ago (+1/-0)

Post jazz then. I miss the game. May have to hit a new open mic, even if I just read poetry

You too! We've just recently celebrated our 7th anniversary. We've been at this for a long time now.
