Without reading the article I am going to take a stab in the dark and hypothesize temperature control, like a scrotum.

Scientists are stupid and don't understand cause & effect. To take Nietzsche's example, the eye is not made to see: sight is the effect of the eye. You can't ask why elephants have wrinkles, or you'll get a nonsense answer. But you can ask what are the effects of there being such wrinkles.
