The International Longshoremen’s Association said it had agreed to extend the contract until Jan. 15 and work will resume.

That 62% is just a carrot to get the union to stop striking during election season. It's a sweet deal for the workers pay wise, but they had other concerns over automation that this doesn't address. They'll never negotiate that much of a raise and also have assurance most of their jobs won't be automated away. The shipping companies can effectively run out the clock with the union by letting these talks fail in January, then having the new President cancel the next strike. That means no raise or assurances.

Thought 1: The member groups of these maritime associations just saw a 62% increase in their wage costs. That just means everything is going to get more expensive to ship, and that just means everything is going to be more expensive at the store.

Thought 2: Congratulations, you just increased the incentives for members of these employer groups to automate as quickly as they can. I'm actually not very confident these negotiations are going to hold up, and more than likely, they'll just get fucked by the next administration. Kicking the can down the road.
