On that note, my grandfather flew B-17s in the South Pacific. Twice he was shot down and safely landed. On the second crash landing, he was credited for getting the crew of ten off the plane to safety, as he was the only one not severely injured. Some call him a hero. Bullshit. Was told by a friend of mine that was an Afghan war vet, former Marine Recon, that EOD was full of fuckups and degenerates. The logic tracks, if they make a mistake, the military doesn't lose someone that was valuable in any other branch if they were reassigned. EOD is pretty much the opposite of every soldier you'd be willing to send to the front lines; you send men out there that you would be okay with getting rid of.
