Short version: around 600 years ago, the jewish faith was determined to be incompatible with the Spanish, who were Christian. Ethnic jews were ordered to convert or leave, and were given a deadline. Many converted to avoid having to leave. Those who converted to the satisfaction of the Church were called conversos.

A large number of the converts continued practicing jewry, which became a bit of an epidemic, and led to the inquisition, whose entire purpose was to root out these false converts, called Marranos, or swine.

There is a huge story here, of which this is a small part. You see, jews had been infiltrating nations for a long while, and were welcomed in a guests.
