Welcome to the Friday Night Guitar Thread. The holiday weekend is upon us, let's have some fun. There's not many things quite as much fun as making music with your friends. It's even fun to play a bitchin' guitar solo. Come join us and share with us some music that you played. We'd love to hear it!!

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Upgoat.net go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @TheRealBuddha or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

Verle came over with Chris just a couple days ago, and we gave Verle a guitar and he started playing whatever the hell he was playing and it turned into basically Verle, Chris and I making a bunch of noise for 25 minutes straight.

I don't have anything new, but that doesn't mean it's not special...

People often forget how much you can do while remaining in the same key. You have tons of potential without actually changing the key.

Go ahead and try to play that... I'll wait.

Well that was sweet freaking jam. There's a part in the middle there that reminded me of some classical piece I've heard but I dont know the name of . Fucking great. I ain't playing that!

LOL It's just a quick piece in G minor that's meant to show how well you can perform in a single key.

You and Chris should cover it!

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:18:17 ago (+3/-0)

I will let Chris know

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:20:59 ago (+2/-0)

LOL Damned right!

It's not easy to stay in a single key and have it sound interesting for a whole piece. There's a good reason why classical music can move among the keys. That keeps it interesting to the ear as opposed to a single key.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:29:24 ago (+3/-0)

Lots of my songs I stay in the same key, some I don't but most of them I do LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:31:30 ago (+2/-0)

I'm pretty sure nobody is going to take your body of work and declare that it's classical music.

Pretty sure...

A good way is to use a different chord progression during the chorus, for example. You can find a key that fits and then write a run that lets you reach that key.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:32:27 ago (+2/-0)

Yeah, or you can always take the song one step up after the second chorus like a lot of old songs do.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:40:29 ago (+2/-0)

Yup... A classical example (from rock) is the G major to the C major. If they want to be fancy, they might throw in an F minor bridge.

There are 'rules' and they are 'rules' for a good reason. Sure, you can do what you want, but the rules keep you in the territory of appealing to the most people.

I remember Chris and I were trying to learn a Bowie song or maybe a Paul Simon song and it changed keys three times in just the first verse, I think we said fuck this

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 23:03:07 ago (+2/-0)

That's so fucking cool.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 0 points 8 monthsAug 31, 2024 17:26:12 ago (+0/-0)

Thanks! It's all in G min. Nothing fancy, just a big sound.

Here is a song Chris and I did a while back that is appropriate for the festivities on a holiday weekend

Dance, Dance, Dance

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:10:12 ago (+2/-0)

It needs the banjo parts to really 'make it'. They're essential parts of the construction, so to speak.

I've actually been tempted to do this song since the early days when not even COF knew it existed. It's a great song but you need the banjo to really make it work.

I've used the lyrics as a thread title multiple times. The Steve Miller Band is underrated. I'm quite a fan, if that's not already obvious. Trying to pull it off with a guitar isn't going to work. You COULD have made one of the guitars sound like a banjo (not too hard, I can show you if you want) but it didn't happen and the banjo is an essential part of this song.

(As far as I'm concerned. You draw your own damned conclusions! ~grins~)

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:14:25 ago (+3/-0)

You don't think I pulled it off? I thought I pulled it off! LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:18:03 ago (+2/-0)

It'd be fine in a bar, probably.

But, like always, I'm gonna push you to improve.

So, no... No, you need a banjo to pull it off. (You could fake the banjo bits more or less by hitting the strings closer to the bridge and using some palm muting. If you did that then you'd be able to fake it well enough.)

But, yeah, I'm gonna always push you to do your best.

It has been seven fucking years. I'm not gonna suddenly stop now!

(And I doubt you'd want me to stop.)

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:26:30 ago (+3/-0)

I appreciate that, someone needs to push me.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:27:40 ago (+2/-0)

I dare say that it has worked.

Compare your skills between now and seven years ago.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:30:56 ago (+2/-0)

Everybody that hears m e playing in person sure seems to like it

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:38:19 ago (+2/-0)

You've made vast improvements. Listen to your early stuff and compare it to your current stuff.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:39:58 ago (+2/-0)

Thanks, I do listen, and some of it is cringe

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 20:44:26 ago (+1/-0)

I think Chris may have improved more than you.

Before you read that wrong, I mean he had more room for improvement than you did.

His early contributions lacked a bunch, including rhythm.

So, I think he's improved more than you - simply because he had more room for improvement. That is NOT a slight against you. It's a comment appreciating his growrth.

[ - ] ChatGPT 1 point 8 monthsAug 30, 2024 23:04:27 ago (+1/-0)

Sounds like one of those cool hillbilly hoe down songs. Grab your partner doe si doe.

That it does!
