uh... not sure thats actually true.

im in melbourne, weve got like.... 3 toll roads and two sets of tunnels, one tunnel connects the m1 east to west so you dont have to get on to city surface roads, one tunnel hooks up one of the toll roads onto the end of an old freeway which is still free. i can go city tolls or no tolls in two different directions where i am and the difference for all four routes is about 3 minutes tops in normal conditions... so i dont bother with the tollways.

Im old enough for the Westgate bridge to actually be fully tolled, to the point we used to have to stop to drop a coin in. As soon as it was paid off the gates went up, and years later the booths got removed. Post 911 some faggot got a kickback to install massive 5 lane long boom gates to drop down 'when the terrorisms blow up the bridges' and theyve probably rusted solid by now.

probably only reason to actually use the tollways for most people is going east/west west/east, bypassing the tunnels is a bit of a pain in the ass because all routes go via roads filled with fuckin cyclists and/or queens road past Albert Park and always has been, it was always surface roads, and a fucking cunt. When thats slow for peak, tunnel is slow for peak, time ends up the same. m1 toward dandenong you got princess highway, m3 north you got springvale road.

Also, both cities are shit holes.
