My former neighbors, Tony and Alba, used to have the best pizza in the US.

Did they have a business, or did they just make really good pizza at home?

Tony & Albas Pizza was #1 in the US for (I think) a small chain. They had around 6 to 10 locations in the SF bay area region. Looks like they may have sold, as the remaining stores are separate now. It's been close to 30 years or so.

I'm seeing this as a trend locally where venerable old restaurants that were frequented by the upper level corporate types are closing their doors. I mean these are businesses that have been in place for decades. Very well known, very prominent. In some cases, it wouldn't be rare to see local sports celebs, or other local celebs dining at these places.

Best tasting or best DIE bullshit? I don't want my pizza to be edgy, different, or exciting. I just want my pizza to taste good and not give me food poisoning.

Hadn't really considered that, but in hindsight, it's probably just a group of liberals glad-handing each other and raking in our bucks!
