So we're all clear...this, most likely, isn't a regular knife that we're all used to. A blade going into a handle, 3-5 inches at most. Stabbing made is an in-and-out motion. Can be bad, but stabbing usually implies localized area--although could be multiple areas, it's not necessarily really bad.

No. These attacks you hear about are from machetes and are really large. 2 1/2 - 3 foot blade that's used in slashing attacks, cutting veins and arteries easily. Sure, they could also "stab", but this many people critically hurt (as in a horror movie, as stated in the article) means most likely it was a much larger blade than you're thinking of.

But, of course it's reported as a stabbing, implying the justification for those knife bans.
