Yeah, we've all seen Jaws.

This is the incident that the Jaws speech is based on, the USS Indianapolis.

Fun fact, this ship had delivered one of our nuclear weapons about ten days before it was spotted by a Japanese submarine and blasted with six torpedoes. Imagine how different things would have been if the ship carrying the Fat Man was sunk before it could deploy the weapon.

Sounds too much like a faked event. There are very few sharks out in the deep as they mostly stay near reefs, where all the edible fish live.

There have always been staged and outright faked events by governments. Did the ship sink? Yes, and has recently been found 18,000 feet under. And who sank this ship out in the middle of nowhere? US Navy did it for propaganda purposes. The Japanese navy was very weakened and their subs stayed closer to land and near shipping channels.

What a coincidence that the sharks and the Japanese were out there just when a US ship was passing by. And not just any ship, but the ship that had JUST dropped off the atomic bomb and was no longer needed. We knew that the war was ending and needed a scary story to keep up the morale of the folks back home.
