If you need to order a hose or cable approx 1ft, what length do you ask for, without looking it up ?
Ok, now look it up.
Ok, now go to the register to buy approx that length. Darn, the "shoppes" only carry "half meter." Now what do you plan to do with excess? What % waste is that? Try again next week on another project that needs 4ft. Fuck you. You need 1meter, now.
Could you tell your height in cm without looking it up?
No? Ok, take a moment to look it up.
Now - If a woman told you her height in cm, would you even know the relationship to yours?
"Oh, wait. Let me look that up too."
Oi mate. Next up, what "sise" shoe do you wear? (the letter Z will get you arrested in Europe for hatespeech donchaknow) in America, you got 11, 11.5 but in Europe you only get 45 or you can Move up to a 46 (12). "Whadya mean they carry less exact shoe-sizes, you pikey???" (Hatespeech sirens going off in background) Your foot is not conforming to the "proper" unit of measurement, but these handcuffs will!
Generally a size 12 is 12 inches. Does anyone know what the fuck 46 even is, without looking it up? It aint cms. Europeans can't even make up their minds on what unit of measurement to use.
Half meter is a foot and a half. I your example it's not a matter of measuring systems, it's a supplier issue. Your examples are about what is familiar to you and not what is easier. I can flip that around for you. Go to the store and you need 30cm (1') of hose. But the store only sells by the yard. Now you have 60cm (2') of waste...
Here is something that is easier in the metric system: You have a water tank of unknown volume. Metric system you measure each side in dm (decimeters) 5dm by 5dm by 11dm. calculate 5511=275. 275 cubic dm. And one cubic decimeter is one liter. Result 275liters. Since you are so good with the inch system, can you do that for me (without looking it up)? why does it suck
One thing the imperial system does indeed do better is measuring torque. One foot long leaver, put one pound on it, is one foot-pound of torque.
Imperial system is for dumbfucks that never needed to do those kinds of calculations anyway because it's beyond their occupation or pay grade. Anything worth a damn in this world is measured with metric.
Anything worth a damn in this world is measured with metric.
We both know that's not true.
It's more of a question of who wants to use Frnch units (be gay) and who doesn't want to use Frnch units (not be gay). I'm in the not be gay camp so I'll keep using inches, feet, yards, miles, etc.
A half a meter is just about 1'8" not 1'6", as you fell into my trap.
Indeed, it's a real head scratcher @kozel can pretend converting to metric in smaller distances (relatable to our human body size) is "easy" as you've demonstrated it is not.
it's a supplier issue.
Indeed. A supplier issue underlying caused by the metric system. That was my point!
In America, we stock in feet and our suppliers get us what we need. In Europe, every customer gets bent over after suppliers won't "improperly" stock hoses and cables at 30cm intervals. It makes their heads explode to stock something that won't go into an even 1 or 100. Dont believe me? Here you go, https://www.amazon.co.uk/simplex-singlemode-Compatible-cables-yellow/dp/B07LH5V5KS
Still don't believe me? Try to find at the entire website any silicone tube thats 30cm long
"Oi mate!"
Now try again with 1 foot.
"Blimey! Even amazon uk sells it by the foot." Which is how you'd have to order (by royal decree?) it because you won't find it that way in the shoppes.
Say it with me: "Metric makes waste"
Edit: Arrogant brit downvotes without a response. Admit youre wrong, lad. Still searching for that elusive vendor that sells 30cm? Keep looking.......
By the way, you limey bastards, this comes up in every home entertainment install, every datacenter rack, and every sprinkler line repair times every person, forever. Don't tell me it's a special case. Your awkward system has doomed your unborn grandchildren and generations to come, forever.
All these problems are only problems because you are stuck in the "English Kings Measurement Matrix". People with an IQ over 110 can buy a length of rope in metric without any problems.
It's less of a question of who has what IQ. It's more of a question of who wants to use Frnch units (be gay) and who doesn't want to use Frnch units (not be gay). I'm in the not be gay camp so I'll keep using inches, feet, yards, miles, etc.
Holy shit, imagine being so schizo you think the metric/imperial systems are jewish tricks to divide white people. Dude, you should go outside sometime.
I thought you were smart. I ask for a 35 footer. Why would anyone stock a hose in inches? 35' is only a 10% waste if you actually wanted 10m (Its very unlikely you wanted a whole meter length, is precisely the point! In your scenario you have to make believe the length you needed happened to measure in a duration of a whole meter, which it surely did not). At any rate, compare that 10% of waste to examples I gave of 1' or 4' (both of which are lengths I can purchase in America) - over 50% waste when converted to m. It's not just the waste in of itself. You don't want the slack for ends that are terminated and can't be trimmed down. Your exercise is futile. Imperial is always stocked more precisely than anything metric, which was my original point.
There are instances that metric is absolutely better, but you aught to admit the fact is that it's not the proper tool to use for lengths in proximity to our human body size. Nor is it "easy" to convert on the go, as you imagine. There is no scenario where you have a measuring tape in meters. So you measure in feet, and then you convert to m? That doesnt make any sense.
There exists no country where cables and hose lengths hold a candle to orderability to imperial. It makes no difference if you are in Europe, the insufficient stock problem still exists everywhere except U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico, Liberia, Myanmar where you can get the right lengths.
The french has a superior method of describing "deja vu."
Japanese have a language where the pronoun is described alongside how they feel about it (eg, humble, arrogant, etc).
In Germany there is a word "schadenfreude" that we have no translation for.
Latin countries cant directly translate "awkward."
These are only examples about how sometimes languages can be superior or inferior given the circumstance. As are units of measurements, where America reigns supreme in these examples, and "metres" clearly inferior.
I've only described situations where it isn't "easy" as you pretend, if that is fascinating.
For any day to day items, in parallel to the size of your human body. Not talking garden hoses here.
power cables, hdmi cables, ethernet cables, dimensions of a box, belt sizes, shoelaces, hunting rifle barrel lengths...
The one instance on your body that metric is better?
Ring size.
Why?
Because they "improperly" offer every incrememt unabashfully, even though it doesnt ultimately divide by 10. (A shocking thing for a snobby perfectionist to have to forfeit for the sake of sanity, if you think about it.)
For me it depends on what I'm doing. Math, statistics, certain measurements, all make sense in metric. When I'm building something though I tend to use standard. Unless it's really small and/or precise, then I'll use mm.

Metric is fine.
What we really need to do is ditch the base 10 system and upgrade to base 12.
Because that's what the future race of Ubermensch will be using.
